Twice and I regret it very much. It's one of the most irresponsible, dangerous, stupid things I've ever done. I could have hurt someone. I could have hurt myself. I could have been arrested and ruined my future professional career.

I'll never drive drunk again. It's one of the stupidest things you can do.

Then again, now that we have ridesharing services, it's much easier to get home after drinking.

Probably drunk according to the law. If youre watching the game having 3-4 beers you probably arent gonna leave your car and pay $50 for a cab home.

But it all doesn't factor in age, weight, height, metabolism, tolerance, etc. I'm 6'1 and 220 lbs and have drank for a long time, I can drink probably 7-8 "light" beers and not even really feel that drunk but I know I'd probably blow over if I got caught driving.

Knowing me, then that means that I should probably leave the bar at least an hour and half after I finish my drink, not just when I start.

A lot has changed in all the years. In the 70s my father was caught by the cops while really tipsy and they escorted him to his house to make sure he got home safely. IN HIS CAR I mean. No accusations followed. Workers were allowed to drink and drive back then, as long as nothing happened. (Narrator: A lot of accidents happened.)

Once, when the designated driver(my mother) started drinking. I could barely see straight, but somehow we made it home.

I have never and will never do it again.

This always cracks me up, go to any sports bar after a game ends late and you just see everyone drunk af pouring out into their cars. Nobody bats an eye.

When I was in college most of the time if you left your car at a bar they would TOW you without a second thought. Signs up "no overnight parking, violators will be towed" and I'm thinking "this bar is still kicking at last call every night and you won't let people catch a cab if they had too much?" Ludicrous. So everyone would drive home to avoid a 300 dollar towing fee to get your car out of the impound.

I got breathalyzed once when I was leaving an event in a city, that I'd attended with a friend. He was my DD as it was my event, but I decided to let him drink because he enjoys it more and I'm not crazy about alcohol. I had one gin and tonic while we were there, but waited a while before we left. He was drunk.

They had a RIDE program set up near a highway on ramp and stopped me. I was so nervous even though I knew I should be okay, but what ifs were in my head. I told the cop I'd had one drink but it'd been a while. He noticed how nervous I was, pulled me over, breathalyzed me (that's harder than it looks, because you have to blow a lot to get it to work)...then laughed when it came back at 0.00 and told me not to be so nervous. Thanked me for doing the right thing.

Once way before Uber and felt terrible about it. I Uber if I know I'm going to be drinking and keep pillow and blankets in my car if I have zero other options.

I've been driven home by someone who had a few drinks that night. We argued about it, and she said it had been long enough so she wasn't tipsy anymore. I relented since she got really mad and wouldn't let me walk home. I was very uncomfortable the entire time and her driving was definitely not at 100%.

That was me, but it was a banquet hall or something. Wanted to leave my car overnight in a legal spot. Was young and dumb. Won't even have a beer if I'm driving now.

Never while drunk. I was at a guy's house once, though, smoking weed with a couple of friends and the guy who I hadn't met before that night. After smoking for a good while, I found out that my friends had already planned on spending the night there. Apparently there wasn't room for one more to spend the night there (don't ask me why), so I had to drive home again later that night. I couldn't even remember the drive afterwards, as I was stoned out of my mind, but thankfully I got home safe without any incident. Never again, though.

If you're under 200lbs and have like 2 16oz 6.0+ % beers, or 2 8oz 14% wines, in under 2 hours you very likely would blow over a .08.

Imo they should really just 0 tolerance it to eliminate any "I think I'm ok" about it. But that actually does have some pretty serious economic implications. Most of the US is very much built on everyone driving and lots of places don't have taxis or Uber/Lyft. Millions of people drive to bars, drink more than a couple, and drive right on out of there. Every day.

I'm not condoning it just saying it happens all the time.

pretty much the same for me. my house was like three blocks away from the party. still felt shitty about it.

NEVER EVER EVER again. i'm sorry for ever doing it at all.

Nope, luckily never had/have that lack of judgement when drunk to even want to drive. I've had to stop 2 friends from driving drunk too, one I had to take his keys out of the ignition and the second we just split a taxi home.

Way back when as a late teen driving stoned was not my finest hour and realised quickly not to do that either.

The problem with charts like this is that most beers aren't 12oz, and most beers aren't 4%. Most wine pours are 6-8oz and are 12-14%. Most mixed drinks don't only have 1oz of 80 proof either.

Charts like this are actually more harmful than helpful imo. They propagate the idea in general that your liver can deal with 1 "drink" an hour, problem is most drinks aren't really 1 drink and people don't think about it. More like 1.5-2 drinks is what you're actually served. Also you really shouldn't standardize metabolic rates because they vary pretty wildly even among people who weigh the same.

You drink 2 16oz 7% IPAs in a couple hours that's more like 4 drinks than it is 2. People do that shit and more all the time and then hop in their cars thinking it's cool I've had 3 beers in 2 hours its fine. Check that, nah that's like a 6 pack of light beers in 2 hours.

Imo bars and restaurants should all have free breathalyzer machines. That would do a lot more good than charts like this and people generally just winging it because they "feel ok to drive."

I did drive while high on weed a couple of times when younger while doing a weekly long monotonous 2.5hr-each-way drive to see my girlfriend at the time. I'd been smoking every day for a number of years at that point so my tolerance was high and I felt, and convinced myself that I was, perfectly find to drive. A thing I'm shameful of looking back.

I'm just thankful I wasn't involved in an accident of any descript, and that I came to realise how selfish I had been after an acquaintance at the time described his friend being permanently disabled after being hit by two people high on a cocktail of drugs.

Never thought about doing it since that point - and glad it was a conversation I had happened to have had after only having done the journey twice. Even if you convince yourself it's fine and you're fine there's no reality in which the risk is worth it.

Yes, twice. First time was coming back from the VA Beach ocean front on 264 many years ago. I was taking my buddy home who was at least twice drunk as I was(when I found out I was taking him home I stopped drinking, just didn't give myself enough time to sober up fully before taking the wheel). After that incident every time we went out to the oceanfront to bar hop we'd get a hotel room at the beach front resorts(solved two problems, didn't have to drive until the next day and gave us a place to park our cars since parking down there always sucked).

The only other time I've done it was on a private road for about 500 feet from my cousin's house back to where my uncle was living. Yes we could've walked, as for why we didn't I can't tell you.

2009 July 4th, I drank three beers, waited an hour and a half and drove my drunk friends car home. I was 21. I realized that with my circle of friends at the time, I'd have to think about being the DD. I've been the DD ever since. One time I drove my entire family home while everyone was drunk, I was the fucking captain of the drunk tank and EVERYONE was giving suggestions about which way to go that were AWFUL. Usually things would work out when we'd all just stay at someone's place. Now we're all too old for that nonsense.

I also never drink more than a beer if I'm out in case it gets loud and I have to go. Its one beer because I'm a fucking lightweight and I know it.

My dad and his buddy used to get off work and each grab a six pack at a gas station nearby before hitting the freeway to drive home back in the 70s and 80s. They would be sitting in traffic on the freeway in the middle of San Jose tossing back Budweisers. Different times back then.

One Manhattan. I don't know much how they put into it, I hate the fact that bars don't tell you just how much they put into it, and sometimes they even ask me if I want another one. I measure how many units I drink usually, that's how strict I am. And I wouldn't be surprised if bars don't give a shit.

I usually just drink beer at home now, though. I haven't had my last cocktail in almost six months.

Never, and will never. I don't mind being the designated driver for my friends as well. Drinking is entirely overrated, but I do indulge or when "forced to" living in places with great public transport. I drink like 5 times a week in Japan for instance, but in Australia maybe 5 times a month at most but usually once a month.

No. If I drink, I wait until morning to drive on copious amounts of coffee. If I know I'm gonna drink, I'll prepare a ride beforehand and take a taxi if that falls through.

I'm generally a pensive drunk so I don't get overconfident or anything like that, thinking I could "totally make it."

Yeah, just for a reference, one unit of alcohol is 10 ml.

Just times the total ml of the drink you are drinking, and multiply that by the alcohol content. That divided by ten is the number of units of alcohol are in one drink.

No, I always crash at a friends place or get an Uber. I've driven fairly hungover before, not sure if I would have registered on a breathalyser or not.

For me if it's something like bud light i can drink like 3-5 of them before i start feeling tipsy. If it's stuff like shots i only can have like 2 of those before i get tipsy and sick.

And bars do care because they can be held liable by law through Dram Shop laws if they can prove they drank from their establishment. I work with many bars and they take it very seriously if someone is seen drinking too much.
