While running for re-election in 1996, then-Congressman Sanders said at a news conference that the Social Security system had "been adjusted before, and adjustments will have to be made again." The Sanders campaign has assailed Biden for saying Social Security was in need of "adjustments" in a 2018 speech, with Chief Policy Adviser Warren Gunnels on Wednesday quoting an interest group saying the term was a "euphemism" for cuts.

"When politicians want to expand Social Security, which is extremely popular, they say so. They don't use euphemisms like 'adjustments,'" Nancy Altman, president of Social Security Works, said in the statement that Gunnels quoted on Twitter.

Does context matter?

Does anyone actually believe that when Bernie says adjustments, he means cuts?

Sanders: "Here are 10 videos in which Biden explicitly states he's for cutting Social Security."

Biden: "Adjustments!"

Okay, Bernard has to be a Russian asset at this point, the American Jeremy Corbyn.

I'm so shocked a politician who's been in the game for like forty years has made a statement in the past that's inconvenient for his current narrative.

This whole tit-for-tat is stupid. Yes, I know Obama and Biden offered up SS cuts at one point in exchange for stimulus spending, but it ultimately didn't happen and both candidates are running on expanding the program.

Please get back to the important issues like who would win in a push-up contest

Like anyone rational would believe Bernie would be calling for cuts to social security.

The establishment is getting desperate if they think people would actually believe this lol

*scrolls a little further down*

"Sanders' record shows he supported increasing funding for Social Security and opposed benefit cuts throughout his political career. In 1995, he warned that the Balanced Budget Amendment, which Biden supported, would lead to "the destruction of the Social Security system as we know it." He also introduced and sponsored legislation throughout the 1990s to protect and increase Americans' Social Security checks."

Oh ok.

Not to be pointlessly skeptical, but are there any other outlets running this story other than Bloomberg. It's difficult for me to take criticism of candidates seriously there considering, uh, Michael Bloomberg.

Same thing could be said for Biden... why does one standard apply for Biden and another for Bernie?

LMBO.

Still don't know why Bernie thought this was a hill to die on.
Yeah why would he die on the hill of not wanting social security cuts by pointing out that another candidate constantly wanted to cut social security, an easily proveable fact that is a major issue in a primary and with the voters Bernie cares about

what a mystery

on the topic of social security, i have a feeling that the word "adjustments" coming from bernie has the same meaning as it would have coming from biden

feels like some amount of projection is going on here

are you saying Bloomberg.com may have an agenda?

Seriously we're just sourcing things literally from someone's direct competitor now?

Like I said earlier, beyond parody.

Okay, Bernard has to be a Russian asset at this point, the American Jeremy Corbyn.

??? These two statements don't match when the Tories are the Russian asset (assuming this isn't bait because it's literally impossible to tell now).

The Deep North
He said "adjustments" in the context of social security in 1996. Why must you be so obtuse XP

I suppose there are some people out there who can't parse the difference between a socialist saying "social security isn't working" and a centrist/right winger saying the exact same thing. Biden's shtick as a union booster was always about knocking the safety net because working joes had to support scroungers through their taxes. Not a million miles away from Reagan's welfare queen routine tbh

Still, GOTCHA BERNIE!

If we're seriously going to go into overdrive spinning tiny stuff into huge fights, we will never survive this election cycle. Stop it.
