Lately I've had a lot of downtime at work.

What would Era recommend to pass the time in terms of games/RPGs with high replay or lots of content on iOS?

Edit: Single-Player and Gacha

Are you looking for single player experiences or more gacha multiplayer focused ones?

edit: if you're fine with gacha, Dragalia Lost has been taking up all of my mobile gaming time.

KOTOR is a really good fit on iOS. As is Baldur's Gate and its kin. Pricey compared to standard mobile games, but they're richly detailed games unlike most mobile games =P

You rocking an iPad, or an iPhone? If you're using an iPhone, I'd say Final Fantasy games (even if the art suffers in the ports of 5 and 6, they're still fun games, and the SNES music remains) or Chrono Trigger (which was updated about a year ago with all the FMVs from the PSX release).

If you're using an iPad, the above games are still great, but KotOR, while it is playable on iPhone, is much more enjoyable on a big screen like the iPad. Planescape: Torment and the Baldur's Gate games are also technically supported on iPhone, but they're a miserable chore to tap such tiny icons on an imprecise screen like the iPhone. If you have an iPad, especially a Pro, they're excellent!

I find neither as being good for a quick pick up and play session. As well as being battery hogs, in my experience.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvious is the only game I play now. As a Gacha game, they give a lot of freebie for f2p players. The pixel arts are beautiful too.

Here are some favorites:

1. Dragon Quest 4/5/6 - They control well and are based on the DS versions but have some differences that are positives to me. All 3 of them are great games and have a lot of content. 5 is in my top 10 games ever!

2. Final Fantasy Dimensions - this is a game in the style of FF5 I'd say graphically, and has a really fun job system. It's a pretty long game and feels a lot like the classic FFs. It's not AS great as those but worthy of your time. I did not like FF Dimensions 2 as they changed the gameplay to be like battles in stages with cutscenes between and that's the game. . Huge letdown.

3. The Quest - HD graphics first person grid based turn based RPG. It has a massive world with tons of content. A big overworld, towns, dungeons. Loot, skills. It's MARVELOUS!!

4. Siralim 3 - this is a retro looking (like 8 bit+) top down RPG where you have a castle you build up and go into realms that are randomly generated where you explore, fight, and then can summon enemies to join your party permanently. It's pokemon like in that way. Hundreds of party members. TONS of content like overwhelming amount of systems in place. Great great game

5. Final Fantasy 4/5/6 - if you haven't played them this is an OK place. The sprite work isn't as good as the original games on SNES, and things like the UI bother people but I bought and played them all and had fun.

6. Another Eden - a new RPG that is free to play and you can buy characters but there are no timers, stamina or any of that crap. It's really fun with dungeons and towns and turn based battles. Music is freaking incredible too. I was shocked by this game. Never spent a penny and never felt the need to.

If you want more recommendations let me know - not sure what you have played or more details on what you like!

I quite like the Steven Universe RPG Attack The Light. Might only be for fans of the show though.

Keep in mind these are all meant to be played with the phone oriented vertically. DQ8 as well. It's a very weird way to experience these games, though being able to do it one-handed isn't actually too bad a concession!

Don't let your dirty minds wander with that last statement.

If you want high replay and lots of content and don't mind a pretty much all text game get 80 days. Incredibly well written branching journey through a steampunk 18th century alternative earth.

Kind of Dragon Pass / Six Ages are both brilliant.

Of course you also have the ports of Planescape and Baldurs Gare series as well

For single player stuff, Square-Enix is always a good bet on iOS, especially with all the ports of old classics. I'd personally recommend Romancing SaGa 2. It's a bit unusual, but it is basically a lost treasure from Square's SNES golden age. Just be ready to run through some trial and error and ask for help.

Hero Emblems is really great. It's actually quite challenging, but there's room for real strategy in it too, and it's just a paid game with no in-app purchases.

DQ1-6, they're grest ports as well which is rare for SE. Don't try 8 though, it's just not a good port.

Been playing Epic Seven.

While it has Gotcha elements, etc. it's fun at least for me. Being able to choose attacks like classic turn based RPG or just let it do auto play to get through a zone.

Oh, Sword & Poker! Awesome!!

That was one of my favorite games of all time, as an amazing combination of poker mechanics, strategic card placing, and light, cute rpg mechanics and a light, cute style!

...then the game and it's sequel were left defunct and didn't survive the big transition that killed a ton of old mobile games, and now the only version you can play outside an APK is a garbage always online Mobage game.

This is one of the things I cannot forgive Konami for, regardless of circumstances.

Still, if you can somehow get it or it's sequel on your phone, or can play them somehow, do so! They are amazing games!

I don't think it was ever updated for iOS 4 or 5 or whenever the iPhone 4 came out with a Retina display, and thus always looked blurry. Not to mention no Android port is criminal.

I'm afraid I don't even know what Gacha is šŸ˜• but for shame no one recommending Starbase Orion before you edited. It's no RPG but it's one of my favorite iOS games of all time. It's a clone-ish of Masters of Orion from what I'm told. A deep deep 4X game with tons of replayability. Easy to pick up on the phone (no iPad needed) and play a quick session or alternatively lose hours into. Start out with a planet and several ships and work towards colonizing the Galaxy all while resource managing, researching, upgrading and designing ships and municipal and defense buildings, spycraft, diplomacy, etc. Real time combat although you don't have a ton of input into it beyond dictating the style of combat you want an individual ship to do while in combat.

It really has everything you'd expect from these types of games all in the palm of your hand. It's by far the deepest 4X game that I've ever played on iOS.

There was supposed to be a sequel years ago but from what I understand it's just one guy and there hasn't been any update on part two for at least a couple of years. I suspect it'll never happen but this one is fine as is. Absolutely fantastic game that every iOS gamer should at least try

I'll throw my hat in with a few bumps from time to time, hopefully, but for now, I'll recommend a great offline Rpg i've been playing recently!

Tower of Fortune 3 is another in a line of Casino-style Rpg games, where you travel through a tower, running into various characters, descovering secrets, finding equipment, solving quests, and getting smashed at the tavern, all while interacting with most situations with a three point slot that shows up during them.

It's actually a really fun and engaging way to do it, because while it does have elements of randomness, it's a heck of a lot easier to use timing to reduce your risks then you'd think, and you can spend gold to reroll during a bad result if you think you can do better in a second shot.

Combat is also enhanced with this kind of system, with enemy attacks being just as likely to be rolled and your own various options, so being cautious helps. You also have two other mechanics to be mindful of in combat, Rage and guaranteed attacks. Both you and your enemy have bars under the health bar, you have a rage bar that fills up when you take or deal damage, among other things, and when it's filled, you transform into a terrible demon, who can only mercilessly attack, and deals ridiculous damage on top of that! Enemies get blips on their bar every turn, and if it fills up they do an attack before it depletes, giving you additional pressure to be mindful of.

Oh, and another thing, gold "rules everything around" you in this game. You buy items, you reroll, you pay for a pittance for your time at the tavern, it's important. And luckily, quite easy to accrue and keep if you're smart, either in fighting random encounters as you traverse the tower, revisiting areas that provide you useful stuff, like the Burning stake every morning in the prison, and even at the tavern, where you can get drunk enough to do some dancing, and with careful abservation, get 600+ gold every time!

The last and most important thing to elaborate on is the exploration. It is fantastic! There are so many different NPCs you can interact with, either in random encounters or in various places in the tower. You have multiple quests and storylines throughout the tower you can complete, many items that provide help, ranging from the always helpful Rope to sleeping and honesty potions! And there are tons of interesting, often dangerous situations. It's got that Western RPG spirit you find in games like Baldur's gate, and I love it for it.

Overall, it's a really fun rpg with great progression, interesting events and mysteries, and quite unique game mechanics. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed!

(One last hint, the game doesn't save until you exit the tower or the tavern and are at that "'main menu" overlook screen, so save-scumming bad results or risky ventures are allowed and encouraged. At least by me!)
