No he isn't discrediting the claims about Russia and by extension Mueller's investigation, he's discrediting the power Mueller has to do anything about it.

People are welcome to hate Maher, I definitely find things to strongly disagree with him about (Israel), but on this, he sort of has a good point. So Mueller subpoenas Trump, Trump tells Mueller where to go, then the issue goes to the Supreme Court, which has been as partisan as the Congress since Bush v Gore, and we assume they make a ruling against Trump, and Trump tells even them to go to hell. Then what? We expect enough Republicans to magically grow a moral fabric to give the Senate the 67 votes it needs to impeach?

I have as much blind optimism about the world being rid of President Trump earlier than 2024 as anyone else, his existence makes the world a morally bankrupt place, but sometimes the realists have to step to the fore and remind everyone what the situation really is.

He's somewhat right, finding evidence isn't the hard thing in this case, it's doing something concrete about it with the evidence.

What an incredibly ignorant, factless post. Wishing for something won’t make it true, Mahar made some excellent points last night and this idea that Trump is somehow going to get impeached by Republicans is incredibly dull and simplistic.

Fox News and every republicans and Trump voter will scream for a life time that this was a witch hunt based on illegal leaks and will contest the legitimacy of this entire investigation / impeachment / conviction.

American needs Mueller to finsh the job and have a rock solid report, for moral high ground but it hards to imagine a sudden scenario where everything go as they should

Maher is 100 percent right. The only positive that will come from this is maybe enough people will realize that Trump is a cancer and then actually show up to the polls in 2020 to remove him. There unfortunately won't be a big enough swing in the 2018 elections to get him impeached.

You can engage in wishful thinking all you want, but it's only going to leave you disappointed.

I think the thing here is that even if Mueller doesn't cause an amazing take down of Trump and get him removed from office he's basically going to dismantle everyone around Trump in the process including Trump's own kids. He's already started on that path by going after Cohen and Manafort amongst others and I can only see that snowballing to include those even closer and more directly involved with Trump himself. He might not cut the head off the beast but he's going to chop off all its limbs.

It always seemed to me that getting 67 votes in the Senate was going to be the most difficult thing to accomplish given the right wing apathy to Trump. I fully expect a Democratic House to successfully impeach him in 2019 though.

I also fully expect Trump to limp his presidency on to 2020 essentially as a lame duck.

I mean, I think everyone knows this. What people want is for hard proof to be made public so the American citizens are awakened from their slumber of apathy. You can't change the mind of the people still supporting Trump, it's clear that they're either evil and racist selfish pricks, or genuinely shortsighted and dumb; that doesn't mean the usual 60%+ of people that normally don't vote can't be convinced to care.

I'm more worried about what his supporters will do, to be honest. Trump is pretty good at stirring up trouble and they're blind and stupid enough to do something really bad.

I don’t like Maher much and disagree with a lot of his crap but he’s 100% right.

The only real positive about Mueller is the leaks which (hopefully) motivate people to vote because he’s an unpresidented, corrupt piece of orange shit.

And a warning to the rest of the world, to vote if you can.

Even with the biggest blue wave you’re not getting 67 Senate votes and he’s not getting booted out by the 25th.

Can't wait to begin this new cycle of party controlled senates impeaching an opposing president out of spite every four years because this country is populated and controled by apathetic morons, ensuring nothing ever gets done ever again.

Because he is right about alot of things even if you don't agree with it to 100%. Especially this week episode had a very good talk about social media bubbles in todays society like #MAGA or ISIS stuff on Twitter and co. And yes ResetEra is also a bubble where the focus is very leftleaning and that's okay but you've to understand that we (as a community) control what we want to see and how we see it. Bill Maher is the best example. Alot of people on this board seems to condemn the man because of questionable statements and opinions in the past but he has also some very good points. I don't agree with him on everything but on the important stuff he has pretty much the same view as me.

We've been saying this for two years now. It's not going to happen at this point, there's too many people backing him and Republicans are running the senate and the house right now.

It seemed impossible in Nixon's time as well, up until the exact moment it didn't. Politics were just as polarized back then. Nixon enjoyed approval ratings that track higher than Trump has, even well into the scandal. People talk about Fox News manipulating the populous towards Trump, but in Nixon's time, the TV news landscape only consisted of the 3 networks and Nixon exerted massive control over those.

It took over 2 years after the basic facts of Watergate were known to the public for things to turn against Nixon. He seemed completely invincible until things fell apart. He lost his advantage gradually and then all at once.

Maher is out there doing his thing, selling smug assurances and people are more than welcome to buy from him if it makes them feel better, but it doesn't touch the reality of the situation. He misses the facts, both narrowly and broadly.

As for impeachment, its going to be a climb but its not impossible. We just dont know how the Senate's going to look after midterms and what Mitch and co. are thinking. If crimes become evidently clear and there is a massive public outcry, there is a possibility that Mitch (assuming he's still Majority leader) might decide its good to cut loose the dead weight and have Pence to carry their agenda. That's something that can very possibly happen. I just dont know if I prefer Pence as the president over Trump and that's what we gotta grapple with.

Yes impeachment in the House might be possible after the Nov 2018 elections.

But Maher is right getting 67 votes in the Senate to convict Trump could be nearly impossible, because we would need some Republican Senators to actually join in with the Democrats to do it. And I can't really imagine that happening.

So the thing that keeps getting forgotten is this isn't just about Trump but about his entire campaign and yes there are some very hard questions about the culpability of Trump, his henchmen and allies can still go down as we have been seeing. To put it simply, if anybody is draining the swamp, it is Mueller and the investigation hydra that has developed.

The real benefit of this is hurting his re-election chances. That is the most realistic scenario. Impeachment or Indictment is probably a pipe dream.

Is that due to a limitation of the situation or a limitation of your imagination?

Gaining control of the House isn't about immediatly Impeaching. It is about allowing Committees to gather evidence and present it to the public. Until we know the outcome of that process, we can't say shit about the realities of Impeachment and anyone who says otherwise is selling you something.

Lets not gloss over how things fell apart for Nixon. It didn't just happen as some natural progression of an investigation. It happened because Nixon was stupid enough to allow his corruption to be recorded on tape.

Now trump is certainly stupid enough to leave a smoking gun like that lying around, but we're over a year into this investigation and we've yet to see that, and even if we do, the Republicans have given us zero indication that they can be flapped by anything.

Like, yeah, no shit Mueller cannot single-handedly bring down Trump. The point of the investigation is to determine what did or didn't happen re: collusion, obstruction, Russia, Cohen, Flynn, Manafort, et al. What does or doesn't happen after he files that report and makes his recommendations to DOJ and Congress is out of his hands.

Only happens if republicans see a Trump victory in 2020 as impossible and attempt to improve their odds by putting Pence into office.

For real lol, Maher’s a contrarian blowhard but let’s bring it back to reality

Also, he’s right in this regard, direct evidence of collusion (which isn’t necessarily illegal) or obstruction or violations of the emoluments clause won’t do anything in and of themselves. And this kind of direct evidence is the best case scenario out of the Mueller investigation, it’s likely we won’t get anything so concrete.
