On a second viewing, I agree with everyone who says the line about being a kid from Oakland beleving in fairy tales is the best one.

That just speaks so much about Erik's character.

Of course we can't roll back the tape until it actually comes out, but the context of their conversation has to do with killmonger usurping the throne and t'challa being dead.

They do talk about other things, so maybe.
The conversation kinda falls in the middle. They talk about dudes but they also talk about themselves and ther personal responsibilities and where their allegiences lie. Okoye's being to Wakanda which means standing by the throne in moments of disagreement. Which I would imagine would be enough to pass the test.

Good movie but I never felt like BP was ever in any danger when he was in the suit. Really undercut the tension it would have otherwise had. Even when he was losing he was getting stronger. Guns didn’t mean shit. Punching him was useless. Did the suit have any weaknesses beyond the sonic scrambling things?

Just got back from seeing it.
I really enjoyed it. I loved how it was a normal MCU film, but having the various layers in it as well makes it even better.

Would have liked a bit more influence in Some parts of the Priest run comics wise, but that was already Made virtually impossible due to earlier decisions in other films (civil war).

Killmonger throwing T’challa off the waterfall was nice, Ross’ part in helping with the ships ( was really curious about his role, considering civil war and thinking about him in the Priest run)
The social/political layers involved...
Shuri, Okoye and Nakia were really great

Overall it really worked for me and I cant wait to see more of BP and wakanda in the future.

I call them.....sneakers.

That was funny :)

I watched this earlier today and enjoyed it, and this is coming from someone who isn't usually a fan of Marvel films. The cast, costume designs, and music were all fantastic.

It felt a little more serious than Marvel's other films. At least it didn't seem like there was a joke at the end of every scene.

Did you miss the part when he got grenade launcher into a wall and all the saved up energy diffused?

Oh when he flew threw the air and the energy was sapped?

Did you watch this movie?

(I'm only half joking at you)

Saw it today, quick impressions:

First off, any adult who feels "uncomfortable" by this film via seeing it as challenging them from a race/social consciousness standpoint can fuck right off, lol.

Loved Andy Serkis in this. He was a scene-stealer and surprisingly convincing as a powerful, intimidating villain.

Killmonger lived up to the hype, up there with Magneto. Saw the plot twist coming, but loved Jordon's performance and his relatable backstory.

Action scenes were pretty good, and lots of visually impressive stuff with Wakanda. The animation for CG characters in some fight scenes seemed kinda jank and felt videogamey to me, but not sure if that's a dig at the film or a compliment of videogames.

The casino fight scene. THAT is what I wanted to see the camera do in all the action scenes, amazing stuff.

Only major complaints are the weak VFX at times and lack of spectacle in the climax. Maybe it was intentionally dialed down a bit for Infinity Wars and the sequel though? Overall, wasn't amazed, but I get why it's important and am looking forward to seeing the sequels and learning more about the character (never read the comic book, this movie is my introduction).

I enjoyed it but the reviews are a bit high for this.

The structure is the same as rocky 3, lion king and tdkr. Tdkr got crap for having that structure so I’m not sure why this movie isn’t.

This movie also has some of the worst cgi in a marvel in a long time. Not as bad as Justice League but enough that it sticks out. My girlfriend even said something and she never pays much attention to cgi.

The dancing people on the waterfall during the first trial for king was really bad. They looked complete fake.

The costumes, makeup and art design of this movie is top notch. Loved all of it and the acting.

The South Korea sequence had a James Bond feel to it and it was really fun.

It wasn't so much about him physically being in danger as Wakanda and his rule and world view being threatened. The superhero fluff action scenes are inconsequential to the main conflict.

his challenges initially are more in his kingship than panthering

i am looking forward to the russos flipping that. i hope we get a BP fight similar to Hickman + Aarons comic scenes.

Yeah, I get that but if the protagonist is invulnerable the action scenes are a waste of screen time. The whole South Korea sequence was all about Nakia and Okoye because they werent bulletproof and they could have died in the crash. Everything else in that scene was just tedious.

I made a post that was way too good for a locked thread about imhotepery. So here it goes:

In the history of the MCU, Wakanda didn't fuck up Africa's continent. Blame that on the colonizers. They did their best to protect their people from the colonizers, and succeeded. Of course that Wakanda being isolationist is problematic and that's addressed and resolved throughout the film, but the Oakland outreach has several layers that some might be missing:

  1. Wakanda is the 1st world country helping out the fucked up subdeveloped country, in this case, the United States;
  2. It's literal at same time that is symbolic: it brings the utopia of an Africa that was never colonized and an America that was build with the blood and tears of those that were actually colonized. It's the bridge between African and American in African-American, it's the reconnection. It's T'Challa owning up to the mistakes of his utopia city's past by symbolizing hope not just for Africa, but African-American people as well;
  3. It's personal to the film's director, Ryan Coogler: "My goal is to start a (film)business in this area, something that can employ people,” he said. “It will be something the people can point to and kids can see it, saying ‘I can do that,’ instead of doing things that are glaring to the environment.” Source: https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2007/12/17/filmmaker-avoids-tragic-life-plotline/ (This inteview is 11 years old, btw)
This is film is about visibility. This is about restablishing connection with your roots. So of course that T'Challa would be connected with USA. This is an USA film made by an African-American director that grew up in Oakland. In so many ways, Coogler is both T'Challa and the kid at the end of the film. And if you can't understand why this matters, then well, I'm glad that others do and that Black Panther exists for them. Black Panther is one of the best superhero films of all time, if not the best, and even if it was a long time coming, this film was made when we needed it the most.

Sure, but because of his super suit, the tension has to be present in another way. The tension of that chase scene was whether T'Challa would be able to catch Klaue or would he escape again like he has been for 30 years.

I absolutely loved the movie but I find the justification for locking threads based on some more critical articles to be really dubious.

There's some healthy debate to be had .

Yeah and I think that creating threads for "hot takes" with the obvious objective of diminishing the film doesn't deserve to stay around. You wanna talk about the film and has seen a review / hot take, post it here. This thread is popular as fuck, we don't need to create a thread for hot takes. It's like people are constantly trying to create one thread to talk negatively about the film "because". Not only that, I've learned about imhotepery. For that, that thread was worth something, at least, haha.

My post boils down that no positive or negative threads should be allowed. How many threads have you seen about reviews of Black Panther other than this one and the Reviews thread? Because I haven't seen anything else. Of course that there are threads to discuss the score, soundtrack, kids getting excited af to watch the film, but no actual "takes" about the film, either positive or negative. They are all centered on this thread.

Just saw the movie this evening. Definitely one of my favorite Marvel movies. I think Letitia Wright stole the show as Shuri. Danai Guirira was already well known as Michonne from the Walker Dead. But I believe her performance her will make a go to actor when you need a badass woman on screen. Killmonger's final lines will probably go down as one of top last lines by a villain. It's going to resonate with a lot of people and be quoted for years to come.

We're not creating new threads for positive reviews/essays on the movie...

I enjoyed this roundtable style discussion on the movie: https://play.google.com/music/m/Dmn...lstar_Review-Black_Astronauts_Podcast_Network
Oh come off it. Have a guess at how many currently unlocked Black Panther threads have been created since the movie came out.

There's nothing wrong with creating threads to discuss thematic successes/issues with a film in depth, using a particular article as a jumping off point. It happens all the time. Look at TLJ as a recent example.

You JUST started a TLJ thread that could have gone in that movie's OT.

I'm looking at TLJ as a recent example. The threads created for that were a mess.

What we have for BP is much more manageable. Pre-release we had the review thread, soundtrack thread, hype thread, etc. It was a bit of a mess.

Now we have the official thread, thread for the soundtrack, and then a new thread whenever actual news drops (e.g. sales numbers, etc).

People keep all of reviews/essays they find in this thread because it's a meeting spot for people that want to talk about the film without spoiler tags.

As we get farther and farther away from BP's release (e.g. when it's no longer in theatres) then you'll start seeing people post their LTTP/RTTP impressions (these are usually their personal opinions, mind you).

Simple.

You are incorrect. "Hot takes" aren't getting posted to discuss the film. All of the reviews are going either here or on the reviews thread. I'd listen to BronsonLee's advice. He already warned that discussion about moderation decisions should be taking to PM, not here.

Thats what an OT is for. Movie just came out.
And my Star Wars thread wasn't so much about The Last Jedi as it's about Star Wars going forward. It's about the franchise's future and discussing the points of a video that I thought it was interesting to discuss. Era isn't a place for us to discuss hot takes of people targeting films with progressive messages for whatever reasons they have, especially when we can smell the imhotepery from the first page (I'm running this word into the ground).

I wonder if Erik would've given up his dream to liberate black people had T'Chaka and Zuri took him home as a kid? Or would he have said "Fuck that, I'm Wakandan now fuck them other niggas."

I think they would've hid it from him, which would've made him probably still kill Zuri but not have the skills/means to take the throne
