I absolutely thought this post would say "We're discontinuing support for Diablo 3." Pleasantly surprised that we're getting more content.

Whether your personal journey with Diablo III began today or nearly seven years ago upon our launch, we want to give you an update on our ongoing development efforts with the game. Here's what you can expect going forward from Seasons and patches.

Ongoing Content & Seasons
Beginning with Season 14, we introduced Themed Seasons. The goal was simple: change the expected gameplay loop and create unique experiences from Season to Season. Whether mixing up where the most rewarding gameplay lives or altering the source of your character's most potent legendary powers, we want to continue to explore new and exciting ways to change how you play Diablo III.

Since the addition of themed Seasons, Season 16 was one of the most popular Seasons overall, with Season 17 showing similar participation. On PC alone, we saw nearly as many people return for Season 16 as Season 11, the first Season in which the Necromancer was available. We've heard your feedback about wanting new ways to play and to change up your gameplay experience. Based on your positive feedback and increased participation in Themed Seasons, we think we are moving in the right direction. Continue to let us know how we can make your adventures even better!

Our crew is hard at work crafting additional Themed Seasons, a new set for each class, dozens of Legendary powers, and some class balance changes. Quality of life and the occasional gameplay system updates are also within scope, as we evaluate how we can keep bringing new magic to the world of Sanctuary. These updates won't arrive all at once, so if you don't see something for your class right away, don't worry; there's something coming for everyone.

PTR and Feedback
For Season 16, we tried a new approach to launching and executing a PTR. With only one week of public testing, patch notes were provided in advance and a follow-up preview into the final changes was posted before the patch went live.

This approach was highly successful. In the past, we would lose a lot of development potential to deploying additional PTR builds for incremental changes and, consequently, increase the amount of time it would take to deploy on our various supported platforms. PTR participation drops extremely rapidly after the first week, as does the amount of data and feedback, so we plan to continue to use this condensed PTR format going forward.

We also want to better highlight the changes made as a direct result of feedback. Not all changes happen because of PTR testing. Occasionally it's from an amazing forum thread we read mid-season and have worked on (and tested internally) for several weeks in advance. Sometimes that "simple" quality of life request winds up being more complex than anticipated and gets punted to a future patch or cannot be implemented at all without unforeseen consequences. Other times someone swung by a designer's desk at work and a brainstorm happened while they swapped tales about their Season Journey.

While one source isn't always the reason behind a change we've made, we're going to do our best to call out great feedback when it's given, as well as further emphasize design intent and inspiration (when applicable) to changes in future patch notes. One thing is certain: we greatly appreciate the feedback and ask that you keep it coming, because inspiration comes from all places.

Being Clear, Being Communicative
One thing we've been asked for is to clarify what our plans are, what (exactly) we're working on, and where the future will take us. This blog is one of our first steps. More frequent presence and interaction from our community team on our new forums, especially around patches and PTR cycles, is another. We want to be able to talk and interact with members of our community around the world on a regular basis about the thing we love that brings us together: Diablo.

We hope we've provided you a better idea of where we're at with Diablo III. In the meantime, we want Sanctuary to feel like home to all heroes, so you can return whenever you have the itch to slay monsters, don powerful Legendaries, and always find something a little new.

It's good they still support it, i wonder if in hindsight they regret canning the second expansion if they are still patching it in 2019.

I appreciate their effort but this game is in Skyrim territory to me. I've played it too much on too many systems to care about this at the moment..
PS3, 360, Xbox One, Pc, Ps4, Switch

I think I'm done for now, great for the people still clicking away on that mouse but I'll be returning when 4 releases. I hope they take all of this to D4

I'm pleasantly surprised to see that they're still supporting Diablo III with rumors of Diablo IV on the horizon. Doesn't Blizzard now have a metric shit-ton of systems to support?

I can't help but feel like this is a lot of words to say basically nothing. The announcement for Diablo 4 couldn't come soon enough.

"ongoing support" basically translates too yea we're keeping the servers up. It feels like they were and are doing more with Warcraft 3 in the past 2 years than they did with Diablo 3 in that period.

You and I have the opposite definition of "Skyrim territory".

Came back this season cause of a better feel, still not the game I left POE but it had it's own issues. T16 Kept me far more engaged than I normally would be and had fun earning another tab. Hadn't played seriously since S12 and didn't do much in S11 so it was good were mostly the same but improved in set balance, QOL, and the grind felt better.

Next season buffs have me interested and that extra damage, resource, and cooldown circle will be nice in meta groups I run.

I can't remember exactly who made that call. All I know is the game turned around big time and people wanted more. I think it a real tragedy it didn't happen.

If Kotaku's Diablo article is to believed, Blizzard leadership canceled the second expansion right after Reaper of Souls released, claiming D3 was a massive fuck-up.

I put in about 95 hours right after it launched on Switch. I'll dive right back in as soon as they roll out a season I care about. The perks and rewards of this last season just didn't do it for me.

I would hope so. The Diablo community has deserved better than this. I understand some players are relatively new with the game coming to Switch, but us PC bros are on 7 YEARS of mostly the same shit. We deserved better, as has this franchise. Themed seasons are cute, but expansions or a new entry into the franchise are what is needed now. Path of Exile has been eating Diablo's lunch and dinner for a long time.

It's like they don't want money, as Diablo players would gladly stuff Blizzards pockets with cash for new Diablo content rather than creative recycling and the occasional balance patch.

Huh? We are getting new set items, legendary rebalances, and confirmation of seasonal themes, and the last 2 seasonal themes have been decent, with the upcoming one also doing something. Next season there are some new stuffs too, along with QoL updates. It's definitely more than just maintenance mode. What updates were there for Warcraft 3 other than the announced remake?

They've been doing heavy balance changes for Warcraft 3 over the past 2 years, changing heroes and *units and buildings and adding / changing race shop items. It's completely changing matchup metas and they've updated and totally revamped the World Editor to use a new kind of coding (don't know what it's called)

That feels more significant to me than what I've followed of D3 but to be fair I've been checked out since a bit after the necromancer and the "set" meta goes against everything I love about the genre.

Blizzard is probably all hands on heck with Diablo 4 right now. Diablo 3 wasn't made to be a "Game-as-a-service" like Path of Exile is, but D4 reportedly is.

Why don't they do anything about the modded bullshit on consoles that make the game unplayable publicly.

Refuse to buy on PS4 until they fix that.

Blizzard has been running seasonal themes for the last few seasons. They're like PoE's leagues except simpler. In the current season ending fairly soon, players are granted the power of LoN without needing to wear the rings, so the meta did change actually, so as the previous one where players have effect of ring of royal grandeur without using the ring. Next season it's like random buff circles on the floor, which I'm iffy about but hey it's at least something different. I hate sets too, which is why the current season was cool, being able to use any ancient legendary easily. It's incorporated into next season as a legendary gem as well. So there are still new things coming out for D3.

for me the game is done. if people still enjoy it then great but seasons and small/QOL changes just isn't enough to convince me to keep playing. i need new gameplay, new characters, new setting, new content, new areas, .... i just want Diablo 4 at this point.

another expansion would be amazing but it's not gonna happen. if we did get another one it would make the wait for D4 easier and they could take a bit longer to work on it. i don't know if they hoped Diablo Immortal would be what they could throw out to hold us over until D4. we've heard pretty much nothing since the awful reveal.

at this point i'm only ever loading D3 up if i'm bored and just wanna mess about with my existing characters for a bit.

I mean that's pretty cool for people that are still in, but this is kind of a larger debate, I personally think the whole itemization and overall progression of Diablo 3 is pretty terrible so slight tweaks to stuff like that really don't do anything for me personally. PoE lately makes huge sweeping changes (recently entirely revamping magic casting and melee combat in the past 2 season), adding new interesting lore, story and boss fights with their new content/leagues so I personally wouldn't call these similar really at all. The kind of things that would get me excited for Diablo 3 is what I would consider to be new content (what blizzard would probably call an expansion) none of this feels like new content to me so no matter what I'd probably always feel a bit let down by little stuff like this.

It is finally nice they removed the requirement of Royal Grandeur though, that thing has been essential for like 4-5 years lol.

Well yeah PoE is the goat and D3 has a lot of problem but in all fairness, D3 isn't even a game they are actively monetising outside of China so these kind of content updates is actually quite commendable, whereas PoE is made like a GaaS with cash shop. I imagine for D4, Blizzard will give it the same treatment like PoE or other kinds of contemporary multiplayer games, because pushing out big content periodically is not cheap and they need ways to monetise it. Or at least I hoped anyway, because these kind of games are most fun with an economy and online community and continuous support for new content and meta shifts, which D3 sorely lacks for years.

I hope your right. I'm kind of at an all time low with my Blizzard fandom and although Diablo 2 remains in my top 3 games of all time, the recent changes to Blizzard and all the legendary staff that have left and seeing how they continue to itemize WoW and Diablo 3 leave me extremely skeptical that they could ever make another Diablo game that would be to my liking. (No trading??? are you for real =P)

holy shit new sets? I mean I wish this game had a GaaS-like content schedule but I also thought it was basically just on life support. I love this game, still come back to it every few seasons. I really really hope D4 will be a worthy successor. For my money the best ARPG ever.

It's good they're keeping people playing. Expect them to have lots of monetization in the next game though.

D3 getting new sets sorta makes it sound like D4 is getting pushed further out... or that they're about to go ham on Immortal coverage and want to remind people that a "real" game exists and gets supported.

This is my position as well. Items are too boring and 90% of builds used the rings rrog or coe. Set items also made builds boring.

The game is fun and it's cool they are actually adding additional content (new legendary powers and new themed seasons). I played a ton on PC over the years and got the Switch version when it released. I definitely pick it up and level up a new character for each new season. It really feels like a missed opportunity not to have added more expansions to the game.

Hopefully whenever Diablo 4 comes around it will be as enjoyable.

As someone who just jumped back in on console after not playing it in years I'm glad they are continuing the support. I never played any of the Seasons, but it looks like it could be a lot of fun. So this upcoming season will be my first. I'm thinking about rolling a Crusader or a Monk.
