...Define "boomer", because the internet has severely warped it from its original meaning regarding children born in the post-World War II baby boom. True boomers are old enough to be grandparents or great grandparents now.

seriously. i mean, it was a boomer who coined the phrase 'never trust anyone over 30'. it was boomers who protested the vietnam war. how's that attitude toward authority anything like this particular young woman's attitude?...

I dont really think a company posting on a shitty board is at all even remotely equivalent to one siding with a fascist dictatorship's oppression, but okay

This is far and away the worst bullshit in a long while

People born after all shit their folks went through(Great Depression, WWII), to glamorize their time about how great of a place it is because they have it good now without the perspective of how they got there. A lot of Chinese kids are in the 1950/60s comparison to the US where they are experiencing great personal gain, while ignoring all the terrible shit their country is doing to achieve it. You have the Chinese generation of our "Boomer" in the making.

not every boomer was delighted with the government back then. & many still aren't. trust me on this...

I really like that the last few Blizzard articles on Kotaku are accompanied by Hong Kong protest images and I would appreciate it if Kotaku continues doing that until they reverse their decision

uhhhh bnet wants me to provide a photo id for verification if I want to delete my account, wat.
Already did this today- you can definitely verify via sms or email (unless something's different with your account). Their verification servers were acting wonky (hopefully a result of high traffic), but I finally got through:

Fucking appalling.
The sad thing is I bet that they try to bury this at Blizzcon by announcing Diablo 4 or something and that'll unfortunately work with a considerable number of their fans.
I for one, won't be giving them another cent.

well, you could say the same about almost any generation, then, eh? most people of just about all generations are loyal to their countries. & particularly those who do well. same as it ever was..
Yeah. People can roast Elise for being publicly oblivious to China's human rights violations, but there's nothing specifically unusual or crazy about her being proud of her homeland. Same goes for Americans that look the other way at things like border concentration camps. They don't want to acknowledge when shit isn't right here.

Blizzard themselves have made this a point of debate. blitzchung speaks out in favor of his home, he gets banned and everyone in range of his voice gets fired. Elise praises mainland China and downplays ethnic cleansing and Blizzard has nothing to say.

It's proof that you're who you say you are and not an impersonator trying to delete someone else's account.

They can't just use my email? Well that's a no from me dawg

Yeah that makes more sense, maybe their servers are getting hammered but I don't get any other options than providing a photo id

This issue in this particular thread is whether people should hold off on making a meme potentially associating the character she voices with government actions she may not have supported. Her tweets don't make her a bad person, but they certainly obviate the original concerns.

I'm tempted to organize a day of people pledging to not log into their games. I think it's unlikely that enough leave long term to make them regret this decision but a single day of blackout shouldn't be hard to pledge.

No question. I don't know her at all beyond the tweets posted here and I'm not going to go to bat defending her. Making Mei the subject of a pro-Hong Kong meme is something I'm all in favor of. Maybe my comment was clumsily stated but that was really all I was getting at.

I got to say, it is amazing how basically everyone on the Internet besides corporate PR people are against Blizzard on this.

(From Reddit) Blitzchung's response: "I spent 4 years on Hearthstone so I only lost 4 years of my life, but if HK loses it will be forever."

———

God damn. If he actually said that... :(. Like that really hit me hard. Mad respect to him.

Hey look. Finally something that has united the left and right. Liberals are slamming Blizzard and even right wingers on sites like Breitbart are attacking them.

Can't see how Blizzard crawls their way out of this. If they valued morals over money (hah!) they'd reverse their decision and apologize. They won't of course. The fear of Chinese censors banning all Blizzard games is too strong. So I expect them to bunker up the hatches until Blizzcon and hope Diablo 4 and the Overwatch PvE expansion soothes everyone over.

Speaking of Blizzcon. People better dress up as Winnie the Pooh cosplays.

Let's see if any other gaming companies will stand up for HK. I'm sure they're all readying their statements as we speak. (hah!)

Wow, freedom and human rights are such powerful words, it's impossible to lose when you judge by that

Can't risk that relationship with China over someone speaking out. Isn't capitalism awesome?
Yes capatilism has it negatives, this being a prime example. But it beats socialism every day of the week and twice on sundays. Let's ask the great people of China.

Edit : I by no means think blizzard did the right thing here...

Yeeeeeeah but for *some* its for racist reasons rather then human rights.

More than racism, I think that the right is throwing shit at china because they are communists.

They will probably not care for half of the crimes that China is doing if they were done by the USA
