In March 2018, Tencent acquired a 5% stake in Ubisoft from Vivendi,[151][152] and in May 2018 it acquired a majority stake in the New Zealand company Grinding Gear Games, the developers of the game Path of Exile.[153][154] As of March 2018, Tencent is the largest video game company in the world.[155] Tencent wholly or partially owns game companies Grinding Gear Games (80%),[156] Miniclip (undisclosed majority stake),[157] Riot Games (100%)[158] Glu Mobile (14.46%),[159] Epic Games (40%),[160] Activision Blizzard (5%),[160] Ubisoft (5%),[160] Paradox Interactive (5%),[161] and Supercell (84.3%).[162]

In 2019, it was reported that Tencent teamed up with Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China and the People's Daily to develop "patriotic games."

So what happened here is likely to happen in all those companies right ?

I understand what you're saying and I can agree to some extent, but I also understand the other side of it where a platform with wide appeal does not wish to be used in that way and alienate itself by placing a blanket ban on any political statements.
Do you think this move from blizzard isn't a big political statement?
Don't be naive.

ACTIVISION. BLIZZARD.

Suck my cock.

Anyone buying Activision titles hence forth supports this bullshit. Enjoy your Call of Duty with White Phosphorus Gas bombs, while actual problems will be buried by firing people.

Keep that chance, Activision Blizzard.

I can understand why Blizzard did this, as it could mess up their relationship with Chinese investors, but this is way too harsh. Maybe delete the video, give him a warning and reiterate that the views of individuals are their own and do not always represent the views of the company.

This is a possible PR nightmare for Blizzard, and while I support the Hong Kong movement, I understand why Blizzard with strong ties to the mainland wants to be quiet. Where they truly fucked up was in their response, which, while likely to please investors, just adds fuel to the fire. The cherry on top was pointlessly firing the broadcasters. There are many ways to handle a situation like this... Blizzard picked one of the worst ones.

Gaggle of cunts. Blizzard has been dropping the ball for their social shit in a pretty amazing fashion these past 2 or so years.

This is more or less the reason why some things never really change. Impactful companies bending like paper and bowing to money instead of the people.

You know what's fucking funny? Shit like this is EXACTLY why Hong Kong is fighting for freedom.

Imagine, just imagine, China extraditing these casters and player because of this, and charging them with crimes against the state. And Activision will happily escort them out to be extradited.

Fuck Activision.

Blizzard see no issue for their #1 Hearthstone caster being political on twitter for non-china matter.

Of course everyone else on grand master really afraid to speak up on this matter.

Acti Blizzard are wankers and recreants. They are corrupted to the core and I won't purchase any of their products anymore. It's hard enough for the people of Hong Kong to fight for their human rights and freedom. That's pure mockery - even taking away the prize money? Are they comic book villains?!

They're the out of season April Fools Joke. They're the bitch of investors who doesn't give a fuck about the industry and cares about its portfolio of diversified stocks. They're the bitch of every government whom they try to benefit from by bowing to them or exploiting them for that tax break and that untapped market.

Looking at Twitch, Thijs' chat right is getting spammed with "Free Hong Kong," but with Thijs playing in GM... I guess if he speaks out or even comments he will be banned too?

Also Pathra (GM) and Kibler (Caster) are streaming too. But no comments either

A lot more people will stream later - Firebat, Zalae and more. A huge number of the GMs actually stream too.

Would be great if everyone involved in the eSports scene joined together, and issued a statement - and forced Blizzard to be better in some way.

But I have no faith

Now people know what to spam every Blizzard's stream chat/comments section with.

The r/hearthstone thread has reached the front page of reddit.

Now we'll probably see something move.

Hopefully more pro-players of Blizzard titles start to say similar things until it becomes impossible for Blizzard to run leagues/tournaments if they keep banning people.

This might have scared people to silence though.

I see that deflection and whataboutism is already creeping into the discourse (not just here but particularly on the threads about this on the Hearhstone subreddit for example). For example, apparently we should now stop buying all goods which are definitely made in China or which may contain electronics components or other parts made in China. If we own any applicable goods then they should be thrown out immediately. This is a good point but it's far more difficult to put into practice due to the proliferation of products from China.

Fuck these companies with their hypocritical "we are all a wholesome community" messaging and what not. Blizzard used to be my by far favorite game dev and while that hasn't been the case for quite a while now, I was still curious about Diablo 4 this Blizzcon. Instead, I'll likely delete my BNet Acc later and I can only hope they get grilled for this appaling behavior during Blizzcon. I already expect them to take as many drastic measures as possible to avoid that, but I can only hope we'll get some "Is this some off-season Tiananmen Square's stomping?" type of questions.

This Blizzcon better get real uncomfortable for Blizzard. As a whole, I mean. I'm very well aware that the vast majority of individuals don't share the CEOs and shareholders disgusting views, but in the end, you can only voice criticism at those present.

I have been a huge Blizzard fan ever since Warcraft II, I think I have played their games more than any other developer's games. This is unconscionable. If they don't walk this back I won't be spending any more money on their games, regardless of how much I enjoy them.

Fuck the CCP and its human garbage adherents.

They won't. Most have nothing to fall back on, they're practically slaves to Blizzard. I won't put too much blame on those folks. That would be like blaming Sami Zayn for Vince McMahon's blood money.

The severity of Blizzard's action here to me didn't just cross the moral event horizon, it shattered it. I can't think of any company that did something this bad and outright hypocritical in the gaming industry.

They better start being tougher, because CCP is going to test the waters sooner or later, say if John Oliver does another segment about President Xi, Warner Bro's movies in mainland china might start getting banned & Oliver has to "retire"
