What is everyone planing on playing over the long weekend? (For us Americans I guess ha)

I'm hoping to finally try noctilcua, lanterns dice, high risk, and Yes! Ginseng.

I'll be playing a game of Teotihuacán Today. For tomorrow, assuming Forbidden Stars arrives will be playing that. If it doesn't we might just do Escape Plan and the Gallerist!

Exciting stuff!

Not sure yet but on deck are MoM:2nd Edition, Root, Who Goes There?, Campy Creatures, and don't know what else. Just know I need to be prepped for 5 player games.

I'm intrigued by campy creatures

I played it once last night (5 player), it was fun and I can see a good mix of luck and strategy. Luck is since you can't stop someone from canceling your ability (once per round. 3 rounds) but since you only have to worry about it from the players on your right, it gives you opportunities to plan your actions. The gameplay mechanic is nothing new, everyone has identical 0-8 cards and you secretly play one, highest number grabs first but the special abilities trigger at different times that give the game its meat. It can be chaotic with a lot of people but you don't interact with all players at that size.

The Chaos-Meter it neat, can be confusing on how many times you move someone to the bottom (only when people capture a mortal?) but I like how it changes a whole lot and feels like a new way to handle ties.

It seems like a game that can have some depth and definitely want to play it again. Makes me more excited about Parks since Keymaster is making that and made Space Park too. They make some nice, polished products.

Sounds really cool. Thanks for write up
I've seen pics of the current kick starter this week that just came out, how different is it then the one I can just buy everywhere ?
EDIT: I found the info. I preordered the 2nd edition

I fell into a bit of a SU&SD hole on YouTube at work last night. One of the videos I watched was their review of Flamme Rouge. I now need to own Flamme Rouge.

Do you have a link to that thread?

Now that I have a group for Gloomhaven space does matter since it was probably my largest game. The table we used before though is about 56 inches in length and 40 inch depth so I don't have to worry about it.

It does look great too just have to add a red felt and I'll love it.
The Hot Deals subforum on BGG currently has two threads about the table that should be on the front page, since the deal is still going on. There's been lots of discussion there as well about the tables. It definitely isn't as big as what you're used to. I've looked into the Barrington and may get one at some point but I wouldn't be able to play X-Wing in it (X-Wing is played on a 32"x32" surface and the more narrow dimension of the Barrington is a few inches too short for that).

Anyone have much experience with Unicornus Knights? Caught my eye at a local game store and it's the same designer who made Love Letter, which I love. They had it on sale but seems this didn't sell well in the US or something as impressions and reviews seem limited but it has enthusiastic fans. I love the theme and the idea of a Princess charging head first into peril and players chasing after her trying to ward off dangers.

So... I own this game and I've gotten it to the table a couple of times. I like it well enough to keep it, it's definitely unlike anything else in my collection, but it can be difficult to get people "into" the experience. The problem is that while it looks like a tactical combat game, it's almost closer to a supply line simulation.

The goal is to get the Princess to the Evil Emperor. She is an NPC who follows a simple set of rules that advance her towards her goal (which is on the far side of the board). She is deadly in battle, automatically defeating anything she encounters, but takes damage in retaliation. If she takes too much damage, she is killed and the players lose.

The players' job is to try and keep her alive long enough to reach the Emperor. They can do this by trying to 'steer' her by blocking her path with their characters or attack the enemy soldiers and Characters. However, the primary thing they have to do is gather supplies and recruit soldiers. Supplies are required for all Player Character and Princess movement, and Soldiers are used to attack enemies and absorb damage.

The catch is that the more soldiers that a character has, the more supplies they need to move (supplies equal to the number of soldiers + the terrain cost of the space being entered). And while supplies can be sent to any ally on the same, or adjacent tile, every 10 supplies requires at least 1 soldier as an 'escort'. The more soldiers anyone has, the more expensive it is for them to move.

Supplies and Soldiers are only found on specific spaces on certain tiles, so quite often you need to have one character 'hang back' and gather them, sending them on to another character who then sends them to the Princess. Hence the game almost being more of a "supply line simulator"... Don't get me wrong, PC's can (and need to) fight enemies with their own armies; there are cool mechanics that can turn enemies into allies, and other neat features, so there's plenty of other stuff to do, but maintaining supplies and soldiers for the players and the Princess is critically important.

Again, I like the game enough that I'm not planning on getting rid of it any time soon, but if you play with people who don't like the idea of maintaining supply lines as a crucial game element, or who will try to ignore that part of the game, they aren't going to have much fun with this.

It is at $30 at a local game shop and they have 3 copies so I will keep an eye on it periodically and see if they ever just drop the bottom out on it's price.

I did pick up Spirit Island because of how highly touted it is as a solo game, and I've loved what I've seen from videos. Plus it has a huge replayability.

Thanks for the write up Steenbock. I've seen the game super cheap a couple of times and almost bought it, but the supply lines and such would definitely frustrate my group.

Hi all - is there a Discord server for this community? I'm designing a board game and would like to discuss it there. Thanks

Who's going to be at Gen Con this year? I won't be able to make it due to some personal things that came up, but I live 15-20 minutes outside the city. If anyone is around and is interested in meeting up for a beer and/or a game, hit me up!

So I've played, and won, 3 solo games of Spirit Island (all with one spirit to try and familiarize myself with the game). I am loving it so far and am going to try a new spirit next time, and keep doing that for a few spirits before I try to solo with two spirits or teach someone else to play. There's so much to unpack here and I love that it seems very much geared for you to win with just the basic first timer rules, but inside that box hiding is a level 10 puzzle daring you to try it...one day...like after you work your way up from 0-9 first.

Ugh, checked out the Middara KS page to see what the hype was about and am now debating going all-in on the $500 pledge.

I'm in the middle of a drive from SC to MO currently. I've stopped in KY for the night. I'm super-pumped about stopping by Miniature Market tomorrow. I'll have to leave a bit later than I'd like to though or else I'll hit St Louis too early to go. I remember going last time I made this drive, in 2014, and I scooped up some great stuff that I have never played, like a dinged copy of Twilight Imperium 3E for really cheap. Now they've actually got the retail store up, so it should be a good time shopping around.
The one game I want to buy right now though, Flamme Rouge, is OOS with them. I looked on the Facebook Marketplace of everywhere along this trip, from Columbia to Knoxville, Nashville, St Louis, Kansas City. The only thing I found was a copy for $35 up in Iowa, and a good ways into Iowa too, which is nowhere even near my route.

Nice. I think I lost my first 4 or 5 games solo. You're doing well. It is a great time for solo gamers. There are lots of great solo games out now.

Well let me tell you I also spent nearly 4 hours on my first game and 3 hours on my next and still messed up some things that both benefited me and cost me. I was just meticulously going over every move, constantly in the rule book, and looking things up online. The third game I intentionally played much quicker (less looking things up and just trusting my instincts) but I also got extremely lucky on the invader and power draws. I played all 3 with River Surges in Sunlight and massive flooding is just a devastating innate power. Reading online to clarify some of the rules has helped a ton because there are some very powerful abilities that I would have thought did far less if I hadn't looked them up.

And all of that with just one spirit, on one island board, with starter rules setup. There's so much more to see and and that's perhaps the most exciting aspect of this.

Spirit Island I have no issue calling a masterpiece. I have two friends who own it but am constantly wondering if I should grab my own copy for solo play. Really regret not backing that reprint + expansion KS.

The only things I don't like about Spirit Island is that it is too bogged down at higher player counts, the artwork is a bit dodgy (especially the map boards), and I find it incredibly difficult.

But it is a very good game.

.. and the explorer minis that I feel like I will crush every time I grab them.

But, it is an awesome co-op game (especially at lower player counts).

Had a chance over the long weekend to give Gloomhaven a go. Played the opening story scenario and lead off 5 more from there over two days.

I now see what some of the hubbub was about, and would love to play more.

To celebrate my birthday, I will have 6 people over for a whole day of gaming. I am looking at getting one of two 6 player games out that no one has played before:

Dominant Species or 1846: Race for the Midwest

Most folks are well versed in the Medium Weight Euro class of games. What do you think will go over better?

Dominant Species is a classic area control, that requires paying a lot of attention to worker placement selection + the board can change in an instant. I haven't played 1846, but others of the 18xx genre - it's supposed to be a really good variant but that style of auction heavy train game can be real hard to grok. "Medium weight" might not be enough if their brains aren't wired right for train games :) I didn't think it played 6 players - Dominant Species does, but unsure that I'd want to play it with that many players for the sheer length of the game.

Man I love king of Tokyo. Been a long time since I played. I know a lot of people don't love dice games because it's more luck than skill but I love how it's a more even playing field then

I LOVE Epic Spell Wars. I know people on BGG hate how swingy it can be and it's looked down on in the same way Munckins is but those two games are what made me get into board games in the first place. I'm done with Munckins but I keep Epic Spell Wars because how easy it is to teach to people.

I also traded my copy of Scyth for $35, Arkham Horror, and One Deck Dungeon. ODD is very random and I feel I'm terrible at it but I did try out Arkham Horror, very fun, challenging, and perfect at 2 players.

My weekend.

Still obsessing over 7th Continent. Showed it to another new person this weeened and we loved it. We abused the hell out of the hunting too since it was their first time and I wanted them to see a lot of the island for the first curse. This is probably my 9th time playing (have to check BG Stats since I record all my plays) and I'm still not tired of showing the Crystal's Song. I quoted it just in case people don't want spoilers.

Here's my friend and I playing Arkham Horror for the first time and trying to learn the rules. We barely 'won' but the challenge is so good! I'm terrible at TCG so making my own decks for this game would be difficult so we both went with suggested decks. Brought over Heaven & Ale again. This is probably one of my more played medium weight games. The scoring takes some time to explain but man, at 2, 3, and 4 players the game really changes. I got it on sale and highly recommend it.

Also played more Gloomhaven with a new table so it can hold even more stuff. Not having to use the monster cards really saves a lot on space! Still loving it and still surprised at how difficult it is to guess the 'right' or 'wrong' choice for city/road quests which is great. If there's anyone in Bushwick/brooklyn who wants to play, I know someone who has it and has been looking for a group though he can't host.

This coming weekend is D&D only but maybe I can squeeze is some Star Wars: Imperial Assault. Started a new campaign with 3 people from my D&D group, two of them who are both new to D&D and board games and they have really taken to it. Been going easy with them since I'm the Empire but my friend keeps taunting and he is begging for a forced mission with Darth Vader...

I've said it before, make your own discord server and advertise on reddit. I made one for NYC people to join. The person who bought Gloomhaven is from my server! Meet ups work too but I guess I just prefer chatting in general. It's easier to make board game buddies than making your friends try board games.

Where are you from?

I don't play a lot of solo games, but I'm thoroughly enjoying Middara that way. Four characters, me controlling them all. Getting much better at organizing on my table - the playmats are way bigger than they need to be & are far from essential, but I've got the space so I use 'em. Practically, it could all be shrunk down without the mats + one of the card racks is unnecessary for minute to minute gameplay, but it keeps it organized.

Deep into chapter two, facing some tougher encounters for sure, with a lot of mid-encounter reveals, enemy spawns, and terrain changes. This particular encounter, I survived, but definitely didn't "win".

If you're willing to put up with reading + a bunch of JRPG-like tropes, with a long story driven branching campaign, it's worth a look.Combat/positioning + deciding when to not do stuff so you can react outside of your turn all adds to it.

Cool idea! I did see some groups on meetup.com that try to meetup at local game store or bar at least once a week. So once my wife gets done with her Masters in August I may attempt drop in on some of those and pick one to stick with. Till then I am just sticking to gaming with the family at home and soloing Spirit Island at night. Our 7 year old son has been loving Azul, but I got to stop helping him because he beats me every time lol. And he sort of understands Dixit, and wants to play that often now which I am all for. Want set up Mysterium and have him try it with us because technically one can play as two mediums and it's a cooperative game.

I live in the northern part of Cincinnati which puts me in range of about 4 gaming groups on meetup.

It's definitely worth it! I'd have never played Gaia Project, Feast for Odin, or Terraforming Mars other wise. My friends like lighter games like Pandemic, Azul, or Lords of Waterdeep. They want a lot of player interaction which is fun with them and not everyone like that, which is great for me since I get to experience all kinds of games.

I'm really thinking about selling my Spirit Island and getting one of the packs here. I do love the game, it's very fun and so much going on.

I've been kind of looking at my collection...namely the games that I don't even want to think about bring to the table. In this case Fortune and Glory. I like the idea of the game, but it's a pain to set up and play, and it can get really random, to the point where there are turns you don't do anything. I think there are problems that could be fixed. Thing is I also own Eldritch Horror. I feel EH does a lot of what Fortune and Glory does, and does it better.

Long rambling way to say I'm thinking of selling/trading Fortune and Glory. I want to give Archipelago another go at one of it's long game length options, but I'm less enamored with it then I was. Archipelago may be headed for the same date as Fortune and Glory.

As a fellow owner of Fortune and Glory, I feel much the same but I'm still keeping it because people are more willing to give it a try over Cthulhu, but damn does the box take a ton of space that could be spent on other, better games. Fury of Dracula is my on the way out game. No one ever wants to play it, but 3rd edition is so nice.
