Border Patrol Will Deploy Elite Tactical Agents to Sanctuary Cities (Published 2020)

Agents from a special tactical team that normally confronts smugglers on the border are being sent to sanctuary cities across the country.

The Trump administration is deploying law enforcement tactical units from the southern border as part of a supercharged arrest operation in sanctuary cities across the country, an escalation in the president's battle against localities that refuse to participate in immigration enforcement.

The specially trained officers are being sent to cities including Chicago and New York to boost the enforcement power of local ICE officers, according to two officials who are familiar with the secret operation. Additional agents are expected to be sent to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, New Orleans, Detroit and Newark, N.J.

The move reflects President Trump's persistence in cracking down on sanctuary cities, localities that have refused to cooperate in handing over immigrants targeted for deportation to federal authorities. It comes soon after the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security announced a series of measures that will affect both American citizens and immigrants living in those places.

Lawrence Payne, a spokesman for Customs and Border Protection, confirmed the agency was deploying 100 officers to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which conducts arrests in the interior of the country, "in order to enhance the integrity of the immigration system, protect public safety, and strengthen our national security."

The deployment of the teams will run from February through May, according to an email sent to Customs and Border Protection personnel, which was read to The New York Times by one official familiar with the planning.

Among the agents being deployed to sanctuary cities are members of the elite tactical unit known as BORTAC, which acts essentially as the SWAT team of the Border Patrol. With additional gear such as stun grenades and enhanced Special Forces-type training, including sniper certification, the officers typically conduct high-risk operations targeting individuals who are known to be violent, many of them with extensive criminal records.

That this is timed to coincide with the census is not a coincidence.

This is going to end in an actual confrontation between ICE and local police isn't it.

Get bent you annoying orange. I hope these cities make the agent's jobs as miserable as possible.

Yes I'm sure this elite squad will only be used on the most violent immigrants.

Oh wait no they won't.

No such thing as elite or tactical border patrol. You're just arming rednecks to fight against immigrants.

Er...more like local police giving them a list of all the immigrant neighborhoods and turning a blind eye when they start getting ransacked. They are all fascist pigs.
Nah. The cops will help them.
If by confrontation you mean a warm welcome party then sure

To be clear, I'm not casting the cops in a sympathetic light. Power-tripping assholes are fully capable of butting heads with other power-tripping assholes. I just wish both weren't heavily armed.

The police do not exist to do the right thing and stop fascism.

They are local-level branches of fascism. They are wielders of state violence with nearly zero accountability, and demonstrably racist all across the nation.

So no.

This is so dumb. These people are just trying to make a better life for themselves and their families. I live about 20 minutes drive from the southern border and Nobody wants this shit here.

I love that there's an elite special forces immigration team with grenades and sniper rifles.

Though 'love' is not the right word. I'm more bewildered than anything.

You'd think there would be far better things to spend money on.

Is that legal? What's the point of a sanctuary city if they can just be un-sanctuaried by the President whenever he feels like it?

For a guy whose own wife is an immigrant who came here based on a falsified green card and chain migration, he sure does hate immigrants.

(In addition to other measures) these cities should cut off Trump properties from infrastructure. No power, water, waste pickup to Trump Tower until he leaves them alone.

Absolutely this. So obvious too.

I do find it odd that they are deploying only 100 agents to cover San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, New Orleans, Detroit and Newark, N.J. That seems to me to be a woefully inadequate number for the job.

This is also partly theater. It will make a great talking point on Fox and the like.

We really need to start putting our foot down, there are more of us than there are of them. Civilians could hold them off from the neighborhoods enough to get them to think it's not worth it, or at least hide any immigrants for the period of time. That's where we're at, human beings needing to be hidden from fucking nazi forces.

If you live in or even near one of these sanctuary cities and have the privilege of not having to worry about being targeted for deportation, you should be doing everything you can to protest against this and protect those who are vulnerable. The disenfranchised sadly too often end up working alone and advocating for themselves but they shouldn't have to when there's a majority of people who could actually act as allies. Organize in your community to push back against this cruelty.

100% The US has sadly already allowed concentration camps for children. The people who implemented those policies are ready to take more and more ground each passing day if they are met with only apathy and inaction.

Adding to this, read the whole Twitter thread everybody...

Border Patrol thinks of themselves as Trump's personal army and above the law. Expect this to get ugly, fast.

Might as well just call them Gestapo at this point. How long until they offer rewards for turning people in? #Abolish ICE.

Thanks for that thread! Her pinned Tweet from last year is something every progressive including allies to the marginalized need to internalized:

People need to start genuinely figuring out what they're willing to fight for and how hard because this (and general law enforcement) is gonna be the enemy when civil rights are targeted. Several millions of people abroad in multiple countries have long since internalized this. Several millions of people in US history have as well. They will work for the people pulling the levers of society to subjugate and destroy opposition to their goal of redefining humanity. That reality is built into the fabric of our country and so many others. If that sounds "militant" it's because it's in response to an institution that has made it clear that they themselves are unapologetically militant and eager for violence.

Considering the talent problems the ICE perpetually has, is elite agent just code for "extra racist"? Or did they finally hire someone who didn't get fired from their local Walmart?

His very own little racist Gestapo. Trump must be practically pissing himself out of excitement.

it's going to be really funny watching the right-wing nut jobs who support this crap cried tears of blood as the next Democratic president dismantles all of it

It's damned sad that things are at this point. I mean, hiding people from the authorities? That's some literal Nazi Germans shit. We need to exercise solidarity with immigrants more than ever right now.
