Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere, ResetEra Official Thread

The Lost Metal OT in EtcetEra

Rhythm of War OT in EtcetEra

Oathbringer OT in EtcetEra

Welcome to the official thread for Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere, where we can discuss the books of this epic fantasy universe.

** USE SPOILER TAGS AND LABEL THEM PROPERLY **
Since there are readers discovering the Cosmere for the first time or going through Sanderson's work in various orders, please be considerate when discussing any specific events in the stories! Include the name of the relevant book/work (and section, chapter, etc. if it's that specific) in the spoiler title.

Example:

UPCOMING RELEASE:
FOUR SECRET NOVELS BY BRANDON SANDERSON - KICKSTARTER
LATEST RELEASES:

Who is Brandon Sanderson?

Brandon Sanderson is a prolific American writer whose main strengths are his extensive world-building, detailed magic systems, and incredible action scenes. He is most well known for the Mistborn and Stormlight Archive books and completing Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.

What is the Cosmere?

The Cosmere is the name of the shared universe in which Sanderson's epic fantasy works take place. While each book or series can be read as standalone, they often have references and cameos that connect them to the larger story happening behind the scenes. The most obvious example is the character Hoid, who appears in nearly every Cosmere work. He is a Worldhopper who travels between planets in order to observe and sometimes influence major events. There are other characters capable of moving between worlds, including members of the mysterious organization called The Seventeenth Shard.

The mythology of the Cosmere centers around Adonalsium, the power of creation, which was broken into 16 pieces called Shards. Each Shard represents a facet of Adonalsium and grants godlike powers to whoever posesses it. The Shard holders often come into conflict and have ended up on different worlds of the Cosmere. Magic on each planet (such as Mistborn's Allomancy and The Stormlight Archive's Surgebinding) derives from the Shards that are present.

Sanderson eventually plans to bring the overarching story of the Cosmere to the forefront with Dragonsteel (a prequel series centered on the world Yolen, where Adonalsium's Shattering occurred) and the final Mistborn trilogy (which will take place in an advanced enough time period where travel between planets is common).

Where should I start?

Where do I start? page on Brandon's website.

Brandon's own video answering this question: SanderFAQ #4: Where Should I Start With Your Books?

The stories of the Cosmere can be read and enjoyed in any order, but I usually recommend people start with either The Mistborn Trilogy (which consists of The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension, and The Hero of Ages) or Warbreaker. The Mistborn Trilogy put Sanderson on the map and remains one of his most popular works, while Warbreaker is a standalone novel that is available for free on his website. You can also go by publication date, starting with Sanderson's first novel Elantris. There are also plenty of standalone novellas like The Emperor's Soul and you can join us in following the ongoing series of The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn Adventures. :)

I've been going through Words of Radiance again, slowly, in preparation for Oathbringer. I've been trying to avoid the prerelease chapters so I can sit down with my hefty hardcover on release and experience it for the first time, but I'm so goddamn excited.

Same re: preview chapters. Can't handle the drip feed pace, need the whole thing to sit down with and immerse myself. :P Man, I still need to get my re-read started...

Main reason I wanted to get this thread back up and running is for the Oathbringer hype though. So excited!

Nice, got this thread up. I'm going to begin reading Warbreaker in November as soon as I finish the book I'm currently reading.

I have Oathbringer preordered on Audible, but I'm going to read Way of Kings and Words of Radiance over again to jog my memory. I don't recall the sword from Warbreaker showing up like others said it did, but I guess I'll read that again too.

Whew! So much to go over, but I can't wait!

Any news on media adaptions of any of the Cosmere books? Last I read, DMG acquired the rights, but all has been silent since.

That's the last thing I've read about the movie adaptions (May 2017):

DMG Using VR Pitch to Sell Studios on Brandon Sanderson 'Cosmere' Adaptations
DMG is taking an unusual approach in how it's trying to sell the major studios on its planned big screen adaptation of Brandon Sanderson's fantasy novel series "Cosmere." The media and entertainment company is spending "seven figures" to create a 15-minute virtual reality experience drawn from "The Stormlight Archive," one of the books in the series. It wants to use the technology to demonstrate to wouldbe distributors that the author's vision has a scope and scale akin to those of J.R.R. Tolkien or George R. R. Martin, two fantasy icons whose works have been embraced by Hollywood.

I recently got Way of Kings and have been enjoying it a whole lot whenever I don't feel the stress of college bringing me down. Not sure I'll be able to finish it and also book 2 in time for Oathbringer though. However I did order a signed and numbered copy of Oathbringer anyways because hey signed copies are always nice. Once that arrives I'll be sure to post it here.

Midgar, With Love
I'm going to get into this saga once I've completed The Wheel of Time. It will be a while yet but that'll be my exposure to Sanderson once I reach the endgame novels and I've had enough friends tell me I'll like this too that I can't help but be excited.

After seeing your post, I went and grabbed a signed edition as well. There's only 1'100 numbered signed copies and they are still available for only $35 https://www.wellerbookworks.com/oathbringer-book-three-stormlight-archive-signed-numbered

I started my re-read of WoK last weekend and about 33% done. Hopefully I should be all done with WoR again before Oathbringer!

I can't believe it's almost here!

So glad we have a new place to discuss Oathbringer when it comes out!

What's everyone doing to refresh the first two novels? I don't have time to do a re-read :(.

Damn, less than 3 weeks before Oathbringer, time sure flies. I might start reading those chapters on TOR a few days before the book releases.

Decided to jump on this. I got hardcovers of WoK and WoR signed by Brandon during the release tours for those books... but sadly no stops in my area for OB. :<

Holy shit, I love the OT title so much

Wanted something positive/inspiring up there. :D (everyone else picturing that scene when they read the quote? I hope so)

My god, these are GORGEOUS.
Seriously. Some of my favorite pieces in a series packed with amazing artwork.

Hey everyone. Finally got through in the last round of verification codes. Glad to see Cosmere thread already up and running!

Those end papers are indeed amazing. I honestly thought about going digital first this time out and... nope, physical all the way. I've been keeping up with the drip feed on tor.com and neeeeed this book.

They shared a couple more earlier today btw. Article contains the identities of the people depicted in all 4 if that's too much info for you.

Yo, Faiz! Good to see you made it. :D

I think I like Dos Santos' vibrant colors more (small wonder he did the Warbreaker cover :P) but Lyon's illustrations are so classic looking.

Legit one of my favorite things about Brandon is how much he geeks out over artists and the work he commissions them for.

Two back cover end papers are sweet. The amount of tlc that goes into the Stormlight hardcovers is incredible

Tor really goes all out for them

I love Michael Kramer and Kate Reading's narration for Sanderson's books, but that art is gorgeous. I may end up buying the book as well.

Hmm... I'm tempted to paint some Cosmere art myself. Would love to paint Hoid by the fire.

Discovering a lot of different OT's now they're not buried under all those pages. Really loved the Mistborn trilogy and didn't know Brandon had so many books after those! Watching this thread for when I'm done with the Xeelee Sequence books by Stephen Baxter. Almost done with that so might already pick up some books.

Holy shit I completely forgot about Oathbringer coming out so soon. I was planning on going back through Way of Kings and Path of Radiance, but I don't think I'll be able to resist starting Oathbringer the minute I get my hands on it.

That cover is soooo dope too

Slowly making my way through The Well of Ascension currently. Have read Warbreaker and Elantris as well. Glad to see this thread make it over but I guess I'll have to avoid it when Oath comes out.

I think there might be an Oathbringer OT of its own? There was for WoR iirc

Welcome! Always glad to see new people reading their way through the Cosmere. :D

Yeah, there were individual threads for WoK and WoR in addition to the Cosmere topic, so I'll post an OT for Oathbringer when the release date rolls around. :)

So I imagine most OB talk (including spoilers) will end up there, plus more people will find the discussion since it'll be in the main EtcetEra forum.
