Well, if you really believe that abortion is murder then there shouldn't be exceptions for anything but the life of the mother. Otherwise it's just about controlling women's behavior. At least they're consistent with that.

Sounds too positive. I'm sick to my stomach about this.

I'm literally shaking at this news. I'm not a US citizen, but this shows me, once again, how much our rights are feeble when it comes to legislation. How easy it would be, for men, to legally take over my body, my agenda, my rights, in anyway they see fit.
It makes me mad that the right for abortion was not put into my country's constitution because lawmakers at the time decided that "it was not needed". Fuck yes it's needed. If the far right gets to the government, abolishing it would probably be one of the first things they would do. This is scary shit.

So Alabama's 'state senate/legislature' voted this? Glancing st membership there are 3 women on this 35 member "senate". I can't find what those 3 women voted, but why in the fuck are 32 other men even voting on and making decisions on what a woman does with her body?

interestingly quite a few of them are really rattled by it. some making throwaway accounts to voice dissenting opinions (i.e. anything that isn't "fuck libruls")

I was listening to an interview with a doctor on NPR this morning who works at a big hospital and does safe abortions and she said she would move to another state to continue her services. Now that there's a risk of being prosecuted for potentially recommending an abortion which couldn't be a "medical emergency" after the fact is too much to bear.

Before Trump got elected I thought stuff like this only represented about 5% of americans. Now I realize it's more like 30-35% of americans, with a good amount more that don't care much about their society past being able to play with guns and having as low taxes as possible.

They only are about a life before it's born. After that it's fuck you, until you hit 18, then it's come enlist so we can get you killed. But hey, if that doesn't happen, you can try to go to school for free while suffering greatly from PSTD while we don't properly take care of you.

I try to comfort myself about states doing this by telling myself that the USA is like a collection of countries, and state to state life can vary drastically.

Then I remember that Alabama gets just as many senators as Massachusetts and helped put Trump in office, and I scream.

I can only hope people are able to find a way out of that garbage state.

I think framing the abortion debate as "women's rights" is very strange when men and women tend to oppose legal abortion in similar rates. In fact, some polls show that women are slightly less supportive of legal abortion than men. So really strange that this is the main criticism.

So it will come down to Gov. Kay Ivey to decide if this bill will be signed into legislation or not. Don't know anything about her, anyone think she will not sign it?

So this seems to be a GOP tactic to get SCOTUS to overturn the Roe v Wade case which will be a major political tool for the next presidential run??

See this is just a dumb move. Going for a total ban is clearly against Roe v Wade and probably won't even make it to the SCOTUS. Atleast try to get them on some kind of weird technicality.

Of course they will. They can afford to send people to other states for this or pay doctors to do it without anybody finding out.

It's about our bodies so of course it's a women's rights thing. Ultimately, whether men agree or disagree with abortion is irrelevant because the responsibility is always placed upon women - if a man wants an abortion but the woman wants the child, the man just leaves the relationship. If a man refuses to allow a woman to get an abortion, guess who still has to carry the baby for nine months?

There are contraceptive measures for men that are safer and more easily reversed than the ones women use every day, but the vast majority of men refuse to go through with it. The onus is always on us to not get unintentionally pregnant and if we do it's our fault and anti-abortion governments are very clear in that they oppose abortions but will provide fuck all support once that child is born.

This is absolutely a women's right issue first and foremost because it isn't about the child but controlling what a woman can do with her own body.

Every pregnancy is risky. Mothers die from childbirth or pregnancy complications all the time in the US. Where is this line even drawn.

A dead person has more rights to their body in Alabama than women. Insane.
