I'm trying to avoid diving into the conspiracy nonsense, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was close to the truth.

I mean, regardless of what side you fell on in this mess, the one thing I think everyone agreed on at one point or another was how weird it was that we kept getting so many leaks in real time. It was clear somebody was fucking up.
Like 50 hospital emoyees getting fired for looking at Jussie's medical records

Case had more leaks than e3

We don't know enough to say this was even at the expense of justice. The only people speaking out about this (Rahm and the CPD) have obvious motivations to lie and/or shouldn't have been trusted in the first place.

They said they did. Their attorney said they did for the check. For some reason that wasn't enough. We don't know why. They can say whatever they want.

If that were the case, the police wouldn't be asking for it to be unsealed.
Well I hope we get some truth about what happened because the conservative conspiracy machine is in overdrive right now.

This for sure.

They literally did it, though.
Yep, there's two options: Hate crime or hoax. Those two guys already admitted to being part of the hoax. If you believe Jussie, then these two guys committed a hate crime instead.

Well I hope we get some truth about what happened because the conservative conspiracy machine is in overdrive right now.
I don't particularly care about what conservatives think about anything. They're the same idiots who think Newtown and Parkland were faked.

So, to summarize what I think I know about this right now:
  • Smollett was not exonerated or found not guilty or anything
  • The prosecution decided to take the [unusual] step of dropping the case in exchange for surrendered bail and a commitment to community service
  • The Police Department and Mayor's Office were not informed beforehand and are furious
  • He is still out of his job at 20th Century Fox (EDIT: He was apparently just suspended by Fox during the initial filing, and they're No Commenting on his future status at this time.)
Is that right?

Sounds about right, yep. Although I think 20th Century Fox made a comment about being "gratified" that the charges were dropped. Not sure if that means they are considering bring him back on the show. I really hope not.

So: (1) guilty as fuck (2) good police work(which I dont buy since they're now investigating leaks in the department) (3) 10,000 dollars and picking up trash along the highway buys you a get out of jail card.

What happened to the Federal charge for the letter? I don't remember what happened with that.

That's something that I don't have a clear understanding about, because it seems both sides are claiming two different things.

Earlier in the thread people said his lawyers, in addition to saying it wasn't a plea deal, claimed he was under no commitment to do community service.

What ever happened. I believe it WASN'T a plea deal, because I can't imagine any plea deal allowing him state in the media that he was completely truthful and innocent, which he did already today.

I believe they referenced the community service he already performed. That along with the money was what the state's attorney said was enough to drop all charges despite acknowledging good police work. Basically they're saying they know he did it, but he paid enough for his crimes.

Based on Fox's tweets he hasn't been fired. They cut his scenes from the end of last season but there's been no official word of the fate of his character.

Not to make it sounds like this is okay, but this isn't atypical here. People get off with very little time, sometimes for extremely violent offenses. This is from a news article about a guy that just murdered an off-duty cop this week:

In that July 2017 incident, Jackson broke into the ex-girlfriend’s residence through a side window, pointed a gun to her head and threatened to kill her, according to court records. Jackson later pleaded guilty to attempted residential burglary and was given probation.

So I am surprised to see people involved with the Chicago machine being so up in arms over this. I'm even more annoyed at Rahm because I didn't see this same energy when it came out taxpayer paid over 100 million in police misconduct lawsuits last year. That's what he needs to be concerned and up in arms about.

I should correct myself and a couple other posters who said Jussie maintained his innocence in his statement today. That was wrong. My bad. He actually said "I've been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one".

I think he used some carefully crafted lawyer language to look as innocent as possible without actually saying he is innocent.

The difference being the guy in your case admitted what he did. In this case, we have the accused refusing to admit it and the state's attorney admitting he thinks Jussie did it but he's still cool with letting him go. Why? We can't know that because they also decided to seal the decision.

“I would not be my mother’s son if I was capable of one drop of what I was being accused of,” he told reporters after a court hearing. He thanked the state of Illinois “for attempting to do what’s right.”

That sounds like a profession of innocence to me

Oh shit I missed that. Well with that and Magats saying he wasn't exonerated -- I give up. I have no clue what is going on. Tons of contradictions with all the parties involved.

Because stoking the divide and using hate crimes as a prop is not a threat
Meanwhile I bet some non violent drug offenders are getting locked up today out in Chicago.

So the two dudes that admitted to beating him up are getting off too?
