If Trump gets his desperately needed pat on the head for this, good for him. A broken clock is eventually gets the time right lol

This is big news. That alone is something.

Unless it includes open inspections, removal of all North Korean officials from power, including KJU, and a comprehensive plan to feed, build infrastructure, and undo propaganda then it's a pointless gesture that will do nothing but give KJU more breathing room to continue being a murderous dictator.

Completely agree.

Anyone thinking dear leader is doing this for any other reason than to legitimize his power, is gullible as hell.

Unless part of the agreement involves the NK ruling establishment being put on trial for crimes against humanity, I don't see much here to get particularly excited about.

Then what exactly does Trump get credit for, then? He threatened nuclear war on twitter. I'm not saying nuclear war was going to happen but if that's the pressure he put on North Korea, do we really want to celebrate that? That Trump or anyone else can literally say, "Hey if you don't stop what you're doing that we don't like we're going to blow you up"?

Considering "what they were doing that we didn't like" was building long range nuclear weapons and saying the wanted to watch the US burn I am fine with this approach. It helped get results to end a long war.

Plus I already answered the question regarding what Trump did in addition to the threat of a possible military strike in my first post.

And hey, this just in from another poster a few posts up: https://www-m.cnn.com/2018/04/26/world/korea-summit-kang-kyung-wha-amanpour-intl/index.html

So this is either the beginning of real peace on the Korean peninsula or a fucking evil trick and World War III is imminent.
Either way it's huge and i bet on the fist one, because NK has nothing to gain or win in a war. You just never know with dictators.

US presidents always get credit or blame for international politics and major events.
If you go by that, the last POTUS who actually did anything was Kennedy.
And Obama got the noble peace prize for literally nothing.

Interesting news but the nuclear talk was mostly theatre anyway and I can't help but feel that this is also theatre.

It depends what personal concerns are about North Korea. If all this means is they shut up and we lift embargoes, fine, but that doesn't nothing for the people that are suffering under the regime.

These North Korea threads are an excellent tool to weed out the MAGA types for my ignore list.

Anyways, I'm going to hold my feeling one way or the other until I see actual change on the ground happening with the North Korean people.

There aren't many words that can really describe something this monumental. Moon has said that Trump was integral to this happening so that case is closed imo. We could then move to calling Moon an ass kisser and that is the only reason he is saying that but I don't think that is the case. I think Trump's brash persona was the language Kim speaks and it changed the game. Trump is still an asshole and this doesn't make him a good person but he was important to this development.

I really hope this all doesn't goes horribly wrong because Kim is a lunatic.

There's not really talk of actual reunification though, is there? Just peace and cooperation. I guess the end goal is (or should be) reunification into one Korea, but that's not what this is I think?
It is reunification but not in the traditional sense.

They will operate separately but jointly. Read Post #93.

It's kind of amazing that conservatives are so full of themselves that they blame themselves for diplomacy they had nothing to do with.

I feel like the only reason KJU is going along with this is to piss off the left. He k ows that if he signs this treaty he may be ending his own reign, but it will cause so much more division in America that America as a empire will be finished. Trump will get his NPP, the mid terms and 2020 will be fucked, and there will be endless far right candidates after that (and that's if Trump let's us have elections in 2024)

Ignoring people giving all the credit to Trump, this is indeed historic and great news if this pans out well.

It seems we're at two extremes in this thread. Either Trump the peace maker or Trump the one who it had "nothing to do with".

We have both South Korean president and foreign minister crediting Trump. Not to mention the back channel deals like the Pompeo thing. This diplomacy probably did involve the Trump administration in some capacity.

America is important but I think that's being a bit overly self-important. Just a bit.

I don't think Kim wants to end his reign in order to help reelect someone who threatened nuclear war against his country.

Not in any way that Trump or their administration intended or should be positively accredited with. Something something "my button is bigger" something something.

Lol if you think the American electorate actually gives enough of a fuck about a peace treaty in the Koreas to not vote out half the house this year. It'll make some waves for sure but the GOP house is done for at the end of this year and possibly the Senate as well

Saw the news only a few minutes ago. This very well could be one of the most momentous shifts on the global scale that I've ever seen in my life (well, technically I was around both before and after the Wall fell, but being only days old doesn't really count).

That being said, the pessimist in me has now soundly slotted this as the most nerve-wracking countdown to that date - please, don't let anything fuck this up.

lol. Are you serious with this shit

You're forgetting that during the last year where the US was saber rattling, North Korea was launching and testing ICBM's and succeeded in developing one that could hit the mainland during direct threat of US strikes.

That's not to say Trump being Trump didn't possibly accelerate these talks, but North Korea was already down this path and succeeded in both having ICBM's and developing a nuclear arsenal with potentially miniature nukes.

Add in the fact that the only nuclear test site in North Korea collapsed, then you basically have a dead end for North Korea. Either they hold out under sanctions forever, or they use the chips they have and cash them in.

Great news. Forget about the US for a moment and think of what this means for the world.

It means that having a totalitarian leadership that kills it's people and isolates itself and developing nukes gets you to the big boys table to negotiate under more equal terms. Of course, this is a more simple view because of the circumstances of where North Korea is located, but the logic would work out with Iran if they wish to accelerate due to US threats (which snowballs into a regional arms race).

I'm still perplexed at why North Korea built up a nuclear program and tested all these missiles just to then shut it all down. What was the point?

The point was to end the isolation without giving up everything. Think of it as going to the casino and getting enough money to pay off something. Instead of digging into their own wallet, they used casino house money (nukes, ICBM's) to negotiate.
