We're gonna lose the NHS because people aren't aware of the shitstorm we are skating near with the tories in charge. Everyone should now what people in the US are having to pay.

Funny video, but as an American this actually gets me teary-eyed out of frustration. Our absurd healthcare system terrifies me every day, it terrifies me that I may have to actually use it. Which isn't how it has to be.

Pic related. It is a European cat reacting to American health costs.

I know how much it costs, a 2 hour ER trip (no ambulance, I got a taxi to hospital) cost me $2351 when I went to New York this year. Thank fuck I checked all the reviews when I got my travel insurance.

All they did was run tests and gave me one 600mg Ibuprofen.

How can you even charge money for basic neonatal baby care. Like at what point are you a doctor and go, you want this baby to bond with its mother, tsk, sign here first.

I guess a doctor that thinks 2500 for an ambulance ride makes sense too.

I was born in the US and I'm happily married in the UK now, but I'm terrified of going back now for any reason because of the state of health care there.

It's expensive in the UK as well, we just have a more humane way of dealing with it for now.

"Shut the Fridge" should become a new slogan for healthcare reform

it's just a bit distressing that it's significantly cheaper to buy an instrument of death in the US than it is to bring new life into it

Best part is I already had paracetamol and ibuprofen I bought at CVS before going to ER, which is exactly what they prescribed to me, the fuckers.

Yeah, I was in serious pain and hadn't slept for 2 days, thought I had a damn kidney stone, turns out it was a muscle sprain.

Recently fucked my ankle in a way that impressed the Doctor.
Clean broke through the joint itself, bones broken around it and 2 sets of ligaments torn.
  • A&E Visit
  • 4 X-Rays
  • 1 MRI
  • 1 General anaesthetic keyhole surgery
  • Full foot surgery with 2 screws put in
  • 2x nights in hospital
  • Crutches
  • Support/Compression Boot
  • Numerous Doctors visits
  • 40 doses of Clexane
  • Upcoming surgery to take screws out
  • Ongoing physiotherapy
£0

No idea how much that would have been in the US but I am ever thankful for the NHS.

I spent 6 months in hospital over three stays following my accident, cost £0. So grateful for the NHS.

With good insurance you would only had to pay your out-of-pocket, but still probably like $5,000.

That inhaler cost. O_O

Tories should get wiped out for this but give people the argument, NHS or Brexit, watch the UK burn. How thick and hateful can you be. The NHS is reason alone for voting remain in another EU referendum but people can't see past their hate. Bloody boiling, how much does it cost to cure that.

Absolute backbone of the country. We're so fortunate to have it.

That's interesting to know, thanks for the ballpark. ~£4k I'm definitely thankful to still have, but also not having to consider finances during that time other than the time off work as well. That's worth its weight in gold.

It's nuts that I see £4k in the US and think that's surprisingly low-cost, when we're talking about four grand lol.

At one point I considered just going home on the plane and just crossing my fingers that I wouldn't die or be seriously injured, then just immediately go to hospital upon landing in the UK.'

I was legit scared of the possibility being admitted and 1) ending up missing my flight home and 2) getting an huge bill I can't afford.

Charging somebody 10k to give birth is straight evil. Like there can be no justification for that. Even 1k would be disgusting. I can't imagine how many helpless uninsured single mothers have had their lives ruined by that in the States.

The fucking inhaler thing is absurd too. I've had asthma all my life, my doctor was a 30 year chest specialist and he said when I was a kid I had the worst asthma he'd ever seen. I've had free inhalers every month of my life on the NHS, from age 3 to 28. That's both a reliever and a preventor every month, I even had 3 for a while as a kid. I was rushed to hospital several times as a kid and spent time in hospital due to severe asthma attacks. I always assumed they were close to £5 each until I went to go on holiday when I didn't have any left. Couldn't get to the doctors in time so considered buying one online, but could only find a site from Australia where it was $50. Absolutely blew my mind. There is no way in hell they can cost more than $10 to manufacture.

Now I learn they're $350 in the USA??? There is no question that I'd be dead if I grew up there. No question at all.

Just to share a quick math I did "for fun".

My mother's husband was diagnosed with lung cancer now close to 2 years ago, and sadly it's not going well (he's got just days left, likely won't survive winter).

He did months of weekly chemio and experimental chemio later (1 week = 25.000 euro, around 100.000 euro/month, 18 months = 1.8 millions). He also took a special kind of pills that costed around 6.300 euro per package (a package lasts 40 days).

Plus he did lung surgery with an international excellency in his field.

Currently we have him hospitalized at home and we get a daily visit from 2 nurses and a weekly visit by his oncologist, all for free. They also give us all the medications required for free.

Last week he felt slightly worse than usual, we called the clinic that is following him and they told us to get there and pick up some medications.

I had to take a picture because what they gifted me was insane

jWskx80.jpg

I felt like I robbed a pharmacy lol.

But yeah, it would have costed us probably over 3.5 millions euro I think, and I'm being very optimistic.

The victim must PAY ambulance calls?

childbirth cant cost, right?

is this a joke?

neither of these cost anything in scandinavia... in fact no doctor call cost more than 20$ regardless if it is an operation or a meeting..

Working at an American company in Japan blows my mind.

A CT scan and two consultations costs me 7,000円. That's like maybe $70 which is so expensive but all my American coworkers are like "Wow it's so cheap here.".

Edit: Just to note companies are required to pay like two thirds of employee healthcare costs so the actual cost is more like 21000円 but I just pay one third.

Only reason I know is because I suffer from chronic anxiety (lots of ER visits) and my son has had numerous health issues (ambulances, specialists, hospital stays). Let's just say that I am very poor now.

Worth mentioning most people who work pay a National insurance tax in their wages, it is just it goes into general taxation, so yes it is free at the point of care, but we technically pay for it

Wait, does it really cost money just to hold your baby? I have never heard of that in my life.

It's worse than that. They do a fucking credit check before they send an ambulance. If your credit score isn't good, no ambulance.

It's monstrous.
