That they're looking for a senior progression designer (gross) sounds like someone got axed/demoted from the existing team thanks to the PR mess they're in now.

The best part is that they're not looking to better themselves, but looking how to better sell their manipulative/exploitative shit.

But for how long, both Sony and Nintendo already caved on the paying to play online bullshit.

I'm glad/greatful Sony came up with the game giveaway idea to make it seem less of a blow but it's still a bullshit taking advantage of your customer scheme at the end of the day.
The first parties have a bit of an advantage. An individual title's P/L can be abstracted to 'enriching' the platform, which generates sales, which generates royalties. It's not as clear cut as the third party market.

However, take TLoU2, it's selling ten million regardless, and it will no doubt have MP with awful mtx elements.

They'll all do it as and when they feel they can.

Love watching my hobbie burn to the ground, one developer at a time.

Can't wait to see how Titanfall 3 turns out with EA...

They're really doubling down on that Eververse bullshit aren't they... They're not the only ones at fault though, thank the players spending hundreds on Silver for a stupid neon emote or loading screen decoration.

Switch says hi. Single fun single player games with replayabiity
lol I don't even know how to respond to this.

I enjoyed D2 at launch but at this point, fuck it. From the XP debacle, to the seemingly lacklustre expansion, to this, I just cannot trust Bungie anymore.

I am glad I had hesitations to buy Destiny 2, so this helps me finalize the decision to NOT buy it.

That is really what I don't understand.

They already ask for the game and expansions... why focus on microtransations and lootboxes? If the updates and expansion were free I can understand but we are paying every three months.

Said that... if you are paying for something you need to get exactly what you want and not a random lootbox.

I played D2 like crazy at launch and had a ton of fun but nah fam. i'm just gonna wait for the shitty DLC expansions to go on sale or something but we seriously need someone to do something about lootboxes and greedy asshole developers.

I defended D2 and enjoyed it. Even double dipped with PS4 to PC.

Not spending a dime more. I'm done, Bungle.

Seems like it used to be that a game's financial success was directly tied to how fun it was. The better the game, the more copies sold. It really was that simple. Now, with "innovative" new monetization models, games are most financially successful when then trap players in feedback loops based on progression gating, RNG gambling, and addiction. Thank god for Nintendo, SIE, and some Japanese publishers for saying no to this shit.
At not point in the gaming industry's history was this ever the case.

Corporations are required by law to grow and make as much profit as possible. Games like Destiny already reach the maximum audience that they're going to get (realistically speaking), So if you can't sell more copies, the next move is to maximize the amount of money you make per customer, they've already done DLC, now they're moving onto microtransactions and lootboxes.

Next step is probably subscriptions and in game ads. My suggestion is to buy games from publishers who's business model still revolves around growing their audience instead of maximizing profit per customer. Like Bethesda or Square Enix for example.

It's like they want to skip the whole fun part of addictive videogames and just get straight to the addictive parts.

Considering one of Destiny 2's worst problems is that all the real cool shit that was available to earn in D1 is now in a lootbox makes my satisfaction with the game a lot less. The more shit you throw in there, the worst the lootboxes are.

I wonder what the thought process is here. You would think devs would be avoiding this stuff like the plague with the BFII backlash and the threat of government regulation.

It's sad that you have look at game purchases and think, are they trying to screw me, is the game a forced grind, pushing paid loot boxes, lacking in fun mechanics and content because they want to sell loot boxes.

On the bright side I have more money for other games and note to devs and publishers, I'll go where this crap isn't if your game is good.

Destiny 2 is a $60 game that requires you to spend $20 three months after launch (one and a half, if you're on PC) to not be locked out content you already paid for, with the vast majority of its endgame loot hunt hidden behind loot boxes (that only gives you three months to collect what you want before they swap it out -- in the hope that you then spend money before each "season" ends -- unlike Overwatch, where you at least don't have to worry about losing non-holiday event content).

How they can see the above description and be okay with that is beyond me.

Jesus... Just hire someone to make a compelling loot system. I want to feel good when something drops from the enemy. I want more legendary weapons and exotics and I don't want to go back to the city to "unpack" them. Just look at Diablo and copy their system ._.

Destiny 2 made me go back to WoW. Feels good

Glad I never jumped on the Destiny train.

We always lash back against new shitty monetization practices and they always take hold anyway.

I hope the gaming media are going in hard on this as they did with EA. They're the ones who can dictate the way the casual audience thinks and it'll only be the causal majority that'll bring change to these types of practices in the long run.

Games arent about fun anymore are they?

Doesn't look that way, sadly.

Seems like it. This is the most sterile thing gaming related I can think of. Nowadays, gamers are really just domesticised cows whose only reason to exist is to get milked for every drop possible.

Ya'll are playing the wrong games. If you really think this, you're not paying attention. Don't let the handful of shitty games and shitty practices generalize the entire industry.

I bet you that for all the noise made over BF2, EA is still gonna make buttloads over microtransactions.

I don't doubt it. You just would think... maybe hold off for a little while. Like there's an honest threat of government regulation on the table, and the industry is going to double down?

Dropped this series after the first game. I could see were Bungie wanted to go with Destiny and I wanted no part of it. Now it appears it's even worse than I had thought.

So bungie admits it's a Skinner box designed around motivating you to spend money on In game MTs. Omg horrible.

There are games out there with regular free content updates that just hit their largest number of players, where it isn't about the grind, but about how much fun the game is to play and the new ways to play each dlc brings.

If a game isn't fun, stop playing.

Because there wasn't a landslide of good single player games on other platforms this year?

You dudes who bum rush these threads to try and sell your megacorp of choice always bewilder me.

I mean, by percentage the Switch certainly has the lock on quality single-player games.

But more seriously, I think pointing out that the Switch has had an absolutely absurd launch year by any metric is fair and especially relevant given that Nintendo has, as of the short release date of the console, not given into the GaaS mentality. Or do you think that idea is completely without merit? The antagonistic and cynical counter-response to the people suggesting the Switch is just as rooted in console war mentality as the - assuming they were made in bad faith - original posts.

They still haven't even justified the existence of the current microtransactions. What the fuck?

They didn't even do their Halloween event they had done for the past two years. Because it was two months after launch? I would hope they have enough support to handle a small event two months after launch. Because the PC launch was a week or so prior? I mean, that shouldn't matter either since they decided to lock PC players out of content if they didn't buy the expansion only a month and a half later.

And they have the perfect patent for this.

With Destiny 2 locking previously accessible features behind their dlc, the outright lie with the XP you obtain and now this I'm think I'm done with Bungie as a company entirely. (Note: I haven't played Destiny outside of the beta but I enjoyed playing that and I loved Bungie's work with the Halo series).

what a patent!

people continue compaining about poor quality multiplayer, and hope, while in the back offices of the companies shit like this runs the show..

lets pay them some more, people. let's hurt them by throwing them some more of our money. it seems as "gamers", thats the only thing we know how to do...

Every AAA game has some kind of monetization specialists at this point that do stuff like this.

Doesn't get them off the hook for locking 90% of decent customization options behind Eververse and releasing a half baked DLC though, what a waste. First Destiny DLC I haven't bought at launch and I have no plans to do so in the future either unless they unfuck the state of the game.

I disagree with the brush your painting across every AAA game, Witcher 3 had no micro-transactions at all. I'm sure there are others.

Either way, I knew this DLC was going to be bad and feature more Ctrl+C Ctrl+V enemies. I decided to call it a day and trade my in my copy of Destiny 2. I had a load of fun with it but the game is too casual and I had nothing to play for after collecting everything so quickly.
