Interesting article from Business Insider, more and more people are just checking out of these shit jobs.

Workers are 'rage quitting' their jobs as a tightening labor market forces employers to take note of unfavorable conditions and low pay

"At this point, it's like a light bulb went off and I was like, I'm not doing this," a former Walmart employee named Gypsy Noonan told Insider.

The phenomenon of rage-quitting is as old as work itself. Some people prefer to end things with a bang, not a whimper. So things like bridge-burning, walking off sans a two weeks' notice, or even making a scene are nothing new when leaving a workplace. But the American workforce seems to be primed for rage-quitting at the moment — especially hourly workers in low-wage occupations like retail, which make up a giant portion of the workforce. In fact, hourly workers made up 58.1% of the US workforce in 2019, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Recently, multiple Dollar General employees at a store in Maine walked off the job after posting notes decrying the company's work culture and pay. Similar incidents have occurred at Chipotle, Hardee's, and Wendy's locations around the country. At the same time, employers are complaining of a tight labor market, in some cases accusing unemployment benefits of luring workers away.

But there's also evidence that many hourly wage earners are simply fed up with their jobs. A study from the human-resources assessment platform Traitify found that one in four respondents were at least "somewhat" less happy with their job than they were a year ago.

Gigs in industries like retail have long been denounced over low pay and high stress. But will the boiled-over rage of workers fresh off a life-altering pandemic — and any resulting labor shortage — finally prompt a major shift in working conditions?

As someone who worked in retail for a bit during COVID's peak, there is no way in hell I could last that long.

I did this on Friday. My work situation got progressively worse and worse over the course of the past three weeks and I made the final decision to quit my job yesterday after being told that every single suggestion I made to improve my work situation and improve my mental health while at work was shot down by management.

Fuck it. The only reason I HAVE the job in the first place is to pay rent to keep living in a city I've been wanting to leave for over a year, so if they're not going to treat me well or budge even an inch for me, I'll just leave as soon as I can get the fuck out of Dodge. I'm not killing myself for a company that won't do a damn thing to help me.

My wife quit because she hated her salesperson job and got a new job where she doesn't have to deal with people and will be making almost twice as much. I was upset she quit her job without having something new lined up, but it worked out.

Same thing happened to me. We were under financial difficulties at the time and I was honestly pissed at her for a while.
So it can go either way.

I have a great idea for preventing employees from ragequitting. I would encourage them to form unions and bargain with the unions on work conditions and compensation.

Hire me plz, megacorp HR department.

My last job before my current one was shit. I didn't so much rage quit, as I just stopped showing up as soon as I got notice from my current job. That said, I'm probably going to start looking for another job entirely pretty soon.

yeah money has been tight for us but things are looking up now. Can finally start putting serious money into saving for retirement. It would be nice to be able to do that someday.

People do this where I work all the time, just never show up again or walk off in the middle of (usually) a night shift.

The work has a lot of autonomy to it, and if you're doing well it's pretty sweet but if you struggle then you're going to suffer.

I wish everyone at least gave a phone call or email or SOMETHING, but it's not worth working a job that is taking a physical and mental toll on you that outweighs the benefits. Not all work is for everybody, and both employers and employees need to understand and accept that (THIS IS BARELY EVER THE CASE - workers are frequently unrealistic about how difficult the work is or how valuable their skills are, management is frequently unrealistic about how good the work and benefits are. And all this comes out when it's contract negotiation time).

I felt like this in april. my mentors talked me out of it and convinced me to stay until i get my masters (Job is paying in full for it).

One thing that pissed off a lot of us non-manager staff was managers getting raises and we got nothing. after that, Alot of people took severance and quit.

I went back to school and had to move away from old trash job to live with family. They called me back and I had nowhere to stay back where I used to work and they paid me nothing compare to what I got from the unemployment boost. So I silently quit so I could finish school and get a job that doesn't suck. Now I'm racking up As and annnoyed I'm paying thousands of dollars to get that good job when at least it feels like I've been good enough to program but just needed a costly degree to prove it.

It was insane. Being told by your boss "I tried to bring up the subject of burnout and overwork [to my bosses], and the answer I got was 'that's the job'" when you already told your own boss earlier that week you were considering moving away is pretty much an immediate sign that things aren't going to get any better any time soon and the impulse to leave is the correct one.

To think that this took a pandemic and the consequent loss of life, livelihood and immeasurable suffering (for many) to get a realization that has been long derided as anti-amiercan as the rich kept richer via exploitation and misinformation campaigns.

Another reason is when you find a new job you don't want to say you can work in two weeks because you have to give your current job notice. They might find a another person who can work that week.

A lot of places don't drug test you and background checks take a a few days now.

Good shit man. You made the right call for sure.

Yeah. I currently live in Chicago, and I've spent the past 8 months working remotely with my family on the east coast. Over the course of those eight months I have kind of run out of reasons to stay in Chicago aside from my current job. My friends are all moving away, I don't really do theatre anymore, etc. The only reason I'm still working the job at all is to afford rent to pay for the apartment so I can keep living in Chicago to keep doing the job.

I made the realization about two weeks ago that after a decade I think it's time for me to move back east, and I told my boss I was considering it, and that maybe we could work out a full-time remote work scenario last week. He said he 100% supported the idea and would do everything in his power to advocate for it so he wouldn't run a chance of losing me.

Then over the past week, upper management cracked down on everything, becoming absolute tyrants about productivity, and all of the solutions I proposed to my boss to improve the situation for everyone (not just myself) were shot down, in favor of a super-regimented, no-flexibility, "work all the time doing the worst part of the job and we monitor you the whole time to make sure you're always working" structure. I got so angry during a call with my boss that the decision was made for me mid-discussion when "that's the job" was uttered.

The irony is that I told my boss about three months ago that the best way to convince me to quit a job is to implement sweeping structural and organizational changes I am given zero input on that reduce my freedom and flexibility to zero or force me down a path I don't want to go, and that's exactly what my company is choosing to do now.

It's almost like they want me to leave.

I did this in 2011 after nearly 6 years of being treated so poorly at Kroger (I stayed because of the benefits). That environment was all about management bullying staff and in some cases doing it in-front of customers. So, one day I snapped, got on the intercom and said (I shit-you not), "I'm a wild turkey!" and proceeded to make a ton of gobbling noises. I walked out and flipped off my Supervisor while walking past them, as she was the one trying to mess with me in-front of customers. The reason I did the turkey was because I was known as the guy who did all of the intercom announcements for the Meat & Seafood Dept., and my turkey gobbles were a common thing around Thanksgiving every year. Looking back at it, I am still proud that I let that abusive environment.

Few things in life are as satisfying as telling your boss to eat shit and walking off the job. It's especially great if you know said boss is going to have to cover your shifts themselves.

I work in luxury retail (which I have no clue how I got there) for the past 9 months and I'm literally at a cusp of just never showing up to work again. It's mostly the "we care for you" bullshit that higher ups always pull that pisses me off. Like I'm not from the US, I haven't visited home in 4 years, in the meantime my dad went through prostate cancer and my mom had a suicide attempt last month, I barely managed to get 13 days of vacation approved for July to go and see my fucking family that lives all the way in Easter Europe and even that was met with guilt tripping as to why do I need to leave for so long, like they don't understand that a month is not enough let alone 13 days. And to top all of that off, my dad got two new tumors discovered two days ago, and of course I got all the "hope he gets well" messages, but today for example we just had a bad sales day, fuck it it happens, but immediately we get messaged by higher ups "what is the problem, why aren't you converting customers?", motherfucker maybe because I'm thinking about how my dad is going through all this shit and I can't be there and the only reason I work at this place is to pay rent? Which suck, because the job itself is a fucking wellness trip compared to my previous jobs (moving company, $10 restaurant kitchen job etc.).

Nice. Tho if you could do it again you should have said Wild Fucking Turkey. It's always good to leave on a nice fat F bomb to upset the poor customers' ears.

Quincy Valencia, the vice president of product innovation at the hiring platform Hourly by AMS, began her career in big-box-retail management, where she said "you enjoyed your workers, and the best ones you wanted to keep, but if someone quit, it was not a big deal — there were 10 people waiting to take that job."

Now, Valencia said that attitude "boggles" her mind.

"A bad experience with the cashier is going to ensure that a customer doesn't come back," she said. "Nobody cares who your financial analyst is. And yet these industries have always taken more time and more care in trying to hire the right people into those [corporate] roles than in hiring the people who are upfront."

That attitude doesn't really boggle my mind, when big-box retailers have gutted small businesses. If a cashier is rude to you at a Wal*Mart, for a lot of Americans there isn't a plethora of alternatives to shop at.

In the nigh-seven months I've been out of work since Covid rendered me disabled, a significant portion of my coworkers have either quit the company or switched from customer facing positions. Other than knowing two of my same managers are there and one other, I literally have no idea who I'll be going back to once I'm cleared to return to work. None of this surprises me.

The overwork, the pandemic, the normal entitlement levels of people, plus the anti-mask/why isn't this open super entitlement levels of people causing employees to ghost or leave does not surprise me in the slightest.

My customer service involves me arguing with people and making them look stupid so I fare better than most, but if I weren't incapacitated by my inability to properly get around, I'd probably be one of my coworkers who quit, too.

quick google search yeah it was the other place

So I started my first day as a staff accountant at this corporate company. I've never been a staff accountant before nor have I worked in a corporate environment. I was really nervous about it and I wasn't even sure if I could stand being in a business outfit all day.

Anyway, I get there and after filling out the necessary paperwork, I'm left at my cubicle with nothing to do. My computer isn't hooked up since they couldn't find the power cord and they weren't even sure if they had done a background check on me. After filling out my background information, I was left at my cubicle again with no instructions whatsoever. I was told before that I was going to be in training but nothing happened.

So I just sat there at the desk for two and a half hours. I was on my phone practically the entire time and I was bored stupid. After two and a half hours I had had enough. So I went to my boss and told her that I don't think this is a good fit. I told her that they don't seem organized and told her that I wasn't doing anything. She told me that it's only the first day and that I'm in training. But I told her that I haven't done anything and I wasn't even getting trained. So I told her that I'm leaving and am going home.

And now I'm at home. I called a couple of my friends, my boyfriend, and my mom called me and they all think that I made a huge mistake and should go back and ask for my job back. So I called my boss back and she said "No. You're done." And that was it.

After getting told that I screwed up, that I ruined my future, that this is how the corporate world works, I'm feeling very depressed. It definitely hit me that I made a huge mistake. Why don't I just kill myself now and get it over with? I have no future anyway, right? Why does the corporate world work this way?! This is horrible! Maybe I'm not meant to be in a corporate environment. Maybe I'm just meant to make minimum wage and be stuck at some dead-end job.

I hate my life. Did I fuck up my future that badly?!

TL;DR: I quit a corporate position after doing nothing but sitting for 2.5 hours. And now I'm paying for it, I guess.

Yeah, I did this a couple years back at a job where a supervisor kept on "scheduling" training for me. They'd tell me to go talk to someone for training on something new, but the supervisor would never talk to the other person so it'd always ended up putting me in an awkward spot.. That on top of just generally being ignored until it was time to throw more stuff on my plate led me to just walking out one day. Didn't say anything, just packed up my stuff, clocked out and didn't come back.

We had three people quit like this over the last two weeks. 2 of them already had jobs, didn't give a 2 weeks notice, and just appeared in our team chat session to say bye and this was their last day.

The other guy got off a support call, said "fuck this place", shut off his computer, and walked out without telling anyone. No one knew until a manager went to his office looking for help, and was nowhere to be found.

In 2009 I was working on a remodel by the hour. The homeowner wanted to cut out some headers on the exterior walls and not replace them. He also wanted me to put like a quarter of the weight of the rest of his roof on one 2x4. Not even temporarily, permanently.
I ran all of my tools to my truck and took off while he was taking a shit. Then I stopped about a half mile away and blocked his number.
