You can stack gold membership before doing the Game Pass ultimate subscription and it will roll over your remaining Xbox Gold and Gamepass subscriptions into Xbox Ultimate Subscription. If you upgrade to ultimate you can't take advantage of the roll-over anymore, so a lot of people are buying a couple of years worth of XBL and then activating it to get Gamepass Ultimate for up to three years (Which usually costs $15 per month or $540 over three years).

I thought you could still roll over until end of month. So if I upgraded to Ultimate, there's no use for me to buy cheap XBL / Game pass subs now is there? That conversion chart won't kick in?

Somebody else may be able to correct me, but I'm pretty sure you can only do the conversion before subscribing to Ultimate and if you did it beforehand it is too late. This article from TheVerge says the same thing.
It's worth noting that this is a one-time offer. if you've already used the offer to get a month for $1 (sadly raises hand), you've used up your opportunity to convert Xbox Live Gold to Game Pass Ultimate.

If you stack BEFORE you convert it is a 1:1 conversion of time.

If you do it AFTER you convert it is something like 3:1 or 4:1 (based on MSRP of Gold vs GPU).

Got it okay. Yeah i made the mistake of missing out on the 1:1 and am now stacking to take advantage of the 3:1 which isnt ideal but still cheaper than going full boat ($15 / month for 3 years)
