Blackout is the best battle-royale experience available today, zombies offers crazy customizable co-op, and multiplayer keeps things grounded for those looking for the classic core.

Playstation Lifestyle - 90

It takes exactly what people love about the series and continues to fine tune the things it does best. This is the Call of Duty that Treyarch is known for. The story is still there, intertwined with lore about the multiplayer Specialists, but this drastic shift for the series has allowed Treyarch to pour far more resources into the parts of their game that keep fans coming back. Black Ops 4 might be missing a campaign, but it still feels like the most robust the series has ever been.

Ausgamers - 90

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is a pleasant surprise. While it's lacking in any major offering for those wanting a campaign to play through, everything else is refined and iterated on in meaningful ways. Blackout is a blast, traditional multiplayer is as good as it's been in years, and Zombies is insanity in all the right ways. Minor concerns aside, this is the best Call of Duty package I've played in a long, long time, and think the trade off of a campaign for Blackout — something I was more than surprised by — has been well worth it.

Attack of the Fanboy - 90

The ultimate Call of Duty multiplayer experience.

Truegaming - 90

Black Ops 4 takes multiple ideas from other modern shooters today which breathes new life into the series making it an ideal multi-player First Person Shooter that presents something special to its fans despite their diverse preferences.

Gamespot Early Impressions-

Sure, there isn't a traditional single-player campaign, but Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 isn't short on content, and its three main modes are substantial. With standard multiplayer and Zombies, it struggles to fully commit to moving forward, and the mix of old content and new ideas doesn't always gel. From what I've played so far, Blackout more successfully incorporates elements of Black Ops' past while forming its own take on trends of the present.

I would have thought no single player would have hurt it.

Guess I'm out of touch.

Good start. It will inevitably lose points from some sites for a lack of traditional sp mode but it's the best Cod MP experience in a long time.

Are these unusually high scores or do CoD games tend to get scores in the high 80s/low 90s? I was gonna skip this completely based on the 15 minutes I spent with the first multiplayer beta (it seemed more chaotic and hectic than ever before), but now I'm having second thoughts.

Well I'll be. I was expecting lower but I guess at the end of the day it's the MP that most people buy CoD for anyway. I haven't played one since the first MW.

I'm in the same boat. Found the Beta the be really boring but if it reviews well I might give it another shot. Treyarch knows how to make a good CoD.

Good scores so far at least. IDK why reviews would really would change someones purchase decision in the case of COD. It is Call of duty, you have probably played at least one of them by now, and fundamentals are still there for the most part, which you either like or you don't.

Not too surprised, despite not enjoying the MP beta (it was okay, just boring. I say this as a fairly big CoD fan).

I'll probably get it later down the line for Blackout and to see what's up with zombies.

I'm intruiged. Was playing COD from the COD2-3 Glory Days until it got uninspired by MW3.

The Blackout mode is what's making the package work. Being able to play COD in a new way really helps the balance of having newly designed Zombies and Standard Multiplayer.

Between this and AC:Oddessy, it seems like our older franchises are maturing and becoming comfortable with their identity

Ya, I didn't really enjoy BO3 (or any CoD multiplayer since BO2 tbh) but BO1 and 2 are honestly some of my favorite multiplayer experiences, so I guess I could give CoD that one last chance

One last chance

Also I'm moderately interested in checking out the BR mode

Haven't played since the beta, but I'm glad reviewers are seeing past the campaign stuff. I actually was never into the black ops campaigns, so no loss for me.

Only played less than 2 hours so far (had to go to sleep eventually, it was past 3am already and I have work today), but boy this game feels excellent. The gameplay is just addictive at its core, Blackout is far more polished and balanced than the beta, and the content seems to be a lot despite the lack of a proper campaign. I would have expected lower ratings but I ain't complaining, this game's really fun, definitely a contender multiplayer-wise for the best COD of the generation, with Blackout elevating the package to impressive heights.

I had a feeling this was going to be good. I'm in

Any news on one x improvements over pro?

No idea about the technical aspects but both multiplayer and Blackout run smooth and look pretty good while doing so on the X. Blackout obviously less so but gone are the Minecraft trees and such from the beta. If it isn't 4K it sure is close to it.

I wonder if other publishers are watching the reviews and sales and thinking "removing single player content doesn't seem so bad, maybe we should too..."

To be fair they do have a limited single player campaign (just slightly shorter than what BF1 had, for example), Zombies mode is bigger than ever (and it has customizable co-op, bots, etc.), plus Blackout seems to be the best Battle Royale experience out there right now if you read the general consensus (to me it's early to tell but it's good as hell). Overwatch and Rainbow Six: Siege also launched withour proper campaigns but the gameplay was top-tier so it didn't matter a whole lot in the end. If the next FIFA skipped the Career and The Journey and launched with multiplayer only with barely any updates it would get A LOT lower scores than this year for example, but Call Of Duty doubled down since they didn't manage to build the campaign in time this time (or if you want to believe that questionable rumor, the story was too bonkers so Activision nope'd the fuck out on it).

Hopefully they are, if the single player content in your game is mostly throwaway (and with CoD and Battlefield, it generally has been) I'd much, much rather the devs spend their time and resources on the modes that really matter.
