Don't know. Normally free stuff doesn't require PS+ but I remember a Blackout (BO4 Battle Royale) free trial a few months ago and that needed PS+

It's usually a crapshoot, sometimes yes sometimes no. Usually betas have been available without Plus, but there have been some cases where Plus has been needed.

Apparently you can also use it as a bracket system to organise full on battles to see which squad is the best, so we could in theory have an Era showdown of duos to see who is the best.
