Can somebody explain why this new Call of Duty even has a public space like this, instead of just a menu and matchmaking screen? Does it have any reason to exist other than to be a place where you can see cool stuff other players have that you want to buy?

I haven't followed the series in a while.

It's something Destiny did, so CoD is adopting it.

Well then. That should diffuse this non-controversy controversy.

I appreciate the correction but man doesn't make it any better.

Essentially its on area to *hang out* with everyone believe it has mini games, but yes its more or less there to show off your cool shit.

It's adopting the trend of the MMO genre mostly, with the faction cities but also like Destiny, taking notes from games like Diablo and Path of Exile with it's hub towns.

And this, much like Destiny 2, let's everyone in the social space get text and visual/audio notifications when players receive items, paid or not. With Destiny 2 as an example, it also shows when they buy the crates (bright engrams) with scrolling colored text but iirc also visual and audio effects when the purchase happens, of course in addition to the content being displayed with scrolling text and so alike.

Seeing someone get a exotic ship or something might just make one of the players in the hub eventually buy into this. Even more so as you have more players and it being displayed in a more "hey look at me" kinda way then previous versions of these systems.

Correction, this is adaptation of casino system, not MMO. Everything you described is what casinos do to make bystanders more likely to try their luck gambling.

The MMO side was in reference to why they make hub areas and the reason behind them, like Orgrimmar or something like Ironforge from WoW in which players gather in a place an show their cool stuff from raids and rare drops off in an attempt to push them towards wanting this cool stuff too as well as attempting to add social aspects to it in order to hook players for longer.

Can you kill another player with a Loot Box? That looks lethal as fuck.

Destiny gets praise for the social space, CoD gets the hate.

Seems like the ugly step child, I personally like this idea and have no real issue with it. The problem however will come when the ranged weapons start appearing as drop weapons only, hopefully there is a way to earn them like in subsequent games as BO3 was easily the worst system of all the modern CoD's.

That's a false analogy. The boxes aren't presented in the same way in Destiny. In Destiny it matches the context of the game because all looted items as displayed to all players, so it's very easy for players to ignore what others are unlocking. Here, it's incredibly explicit.

Personally I don't have an issue with this type of thing. So long as the games design isn't hampered by MT, and regular non-paying players get the same (typical) rate of progression, and normal gameplay balance, then it's all good.

There certainly are similarities to MMOs, but that's not why FPS games recently started adding socials hubs. Make no mistake, this is all about lootboxes and microtransactions.

"I will never forget the sight.
Ships as far as the eye could see, all the way out to the horizon.
Thousands of men, ten thousands even, all across the beach. Some were still cleaning up the scrap and bodies from the fight 3 days prior.
The tank traps the Germans had set up had mostly been dismantled, the few that remained were still dark red with the blood of our fellow soldiers.
So many had lost their lives here, all to take this beach, all to secure what would be our way into Europe to free the people of Nazi rule.
Here we stood then. 48 men. We started with 150 and this is who remained. Two third gone in the blink of an eye. Everyone knew those wouldn't be the last casualties before Berlin.
It was cold. Everything was. The wind, the sea, the souls of our fellow men. Even with this 'victory' morale was mixed.
So O'Malley decided to do something to cheer up the boys. He gathered everyone around and told them to watch.
He took his lucky dollar, an old coin he got from his pops and always carried in his breast pocket, and threw it in the air. Everyone's eyes followed as it flipped higher and higher, not showing any signs of stopping. It seemed like it wanted to reach the clouds themselves.
Then it vanished.
And out of thin air, the men gasping at the sudden appearance, a huge crate appeared and plummeted to the ground.
A loud THUD as it smashed into the ground, sand thrown into the faces of the soldiers closest to its' landing spot.
'Watch this!' O'Malley shouted as he approached the crate. The lid suddenly swung open and what can only be described as thunderous music played from seemingly all around us. Out of the crate three giant cards or posters appeared and hung in the air, each showing a picture.
'Check out what I got boys! Come closer! Come closer!' O'Malley screamed joyously.
He suddenly held an unfamiliar rifle in his hands, maybe German made going by the design, and was busy attaching a colorful new grip to it.
Then he turned to everyone and saluted. I had never seen a man salute the way he did. It was a powerful salute, a salute to freedom, a salute to the brave men in front of him and to the call of duty that all of us had followed to this forsaken beach.
We all cheered and saluted him back, but none seemed to get it right quite the same way he did.

Two days later I found his shiny grip lying in a puddle in the middle of a muddy French road. I felt compelled to pick it up and keep it but it seemed to be out of reach to me. I just couldn't pick it up. So I left it there. But I'll never forget that one moment in time when I saw him pull that thing out of that magic crate."

If they give you an achievement for killing another player with a falling loot box, then I might be willing to give it a pass.

People already seem to tune into twitch streams for this purpose. Might as well make it in game.

Its basically expanding what AW did, AW's match menu had all the players on your team huddled together(they did that because it was the first with crazy character customization)
They saw that Destiny's social hub was popular as well but decided to make it actually interesting with stuff to do.

That's awesome. I've never even bought any loot boxes with outside currency but I think that's neat getting to open them right there with your friends.

This is just... gross. Not only is this game blatantly exploiting players with compulsive/addictive tendencies, I personally feel that setting this kind of mechanic on Normandy Beach is disrespecting the soldiers that fought and died there.

I really don't think this being a daily is that bad... It's just a daily mission so no doubt it rotates each day. Pretty sure they're just trying to get people to realise it's something you can do.

Yea that's pretty obvious and bad

They're preying on certain types of people. People are going to go for these and start wanting to be the guy opening them rather than observing

Is this sarcasm or just PR?
No, just my personal opinion. I get why this might be seen badly. But people watch hours of 'loot box opening' videos already. For me and my friends it's actually a novel way to all see what each other has unlocked. I don't spend money on loot boxes and have zero plan too especially not in cod. Yes I'd prefer no loot boxes at all, but if they're going to exist then I actually quite like being able to 'unbox' a friend's loot box with him.

I'd be angry, but at this point we deserve all of this. This wouldn't be a thing if people would just reject it and see through this obvious exploitative behaviour. But just like Las Vegas preys on the weak and the dumb, so do other big companies.

Hope all the people who tried to justify microtransactions aren't going to complain about this.

I mean, literally, what did you expect to happen?

Jesus lol I freaking hate random loot boxes but man did this make me smile because all I can think about is how smart their teams who come up with and study the analytics of this stuff must be. This is like showing different types of new alcoholic beverages at an alcoholic anonymous meeting where children are also allowed to attend (since we all know that millions of kids play these games no matter the rating on the box). We are literally just legally allowing underage gambling at this point and all while not even trying to hide it anymore now they want everyone to know.
