Talking to a lot of our clients and vendors... the fear of shutdown and going out of business is far, FAR greater than the fear of the virus, both contracting it and spreading it. The business aspect feels more tangible to them. And I'm afraid the virus will be more tangible soon, but not soon enough.

*edit - oops, sorry, didn't see that this was for Canada, still applies though.

No worries. Your point is valid, and is a universally applicable concern.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I'm hoping we get true lockdown later this week (or even by tomorrow) as people in areas like Vancouver aren't following social distancing and "shelter in place" (as Americans are calling it) enough. Beaches were crowded and lines aren't respecting the 2m distance.

BC should definitely know better, too. I read that the Vancouver Mayor will be following Minister Hajdu's advice and will be implementing financial penalties and charges for those who violate.

I'm in mandatory self-isolation right now due to travel. Looks like I timed it well, everyone will be stuck here with me by the end of the week.

Looks like everyone where I am is doing the right thing thankfully, I've never seen the streets so empty.

I'm still worried the whole economy will fall apart and money will be worthless
We won't be the only ones though.

I'm genuinely curious, in a morbid way, to see the damage this epidemic will have done to society at large. So many jobs lost, so many businesses closed forever. It's kind of crazy. I'm sure things will go back to normal eventually, overall, but for some people life will never be the same. Kind of dark to think about.

So I mentioned this in another thread, but I still find it surreal that these kind of responses, from especially certain individuals, are occurring.

Granted, it's a logical response, but consider the folks making them.

It's a really huge deal that this entire crisis is unifying a lot of folks, and this will hopefully allow us to have one large voice to battle this unfortunate outbreak. It enables a lot of good will and faith that many emergency measures can be implemented quickly without any obstacles.

I'm just glad that our politicians are working together and communicating through back channels instead of publically sniping eachother. Especially given the minority government situation and vast range of provincial governments.

Everybody more or less stopped playing politics and are just focussed on getting shit done. Which is a breath of fresh air compared to what we can see is coming out of the USA with all the levels of government fighting eachother. With Republicans and Democrats still fighting over the wording and contents of their stimulus bills.

Our response could have been better up until now, but lets just say. I'm happy to be in Canada right now.

This may be easier said than done, but for any Switch owners, I recommend getting Ring Fit Adventure.

The game is fun and keeps you active. Like tabris mentioned, the psychological benefits from exercise can make a big difference in these tough times

The only time I leave my house is to go to work and fill up gas. They are working towards everybody working from home, but I feel until the government mandates it I will be still going to work till then.

As someone who's currently stuck in White Rock, I'm fortunate that I've avoided what's been going on in downtown Vancouver and North Van.

All the same, I'm doing my part to stay healthy and follow the common sense regulations that are being put into practice (and to avoid surcoming to Cabin Fever).

glad non-essentials are finally being ordered closed in Ontario. Wife and I literally only leave for groceries and take out once a week.

I know way too many people who are out jobs right now. I hope these relief measures kick in sooner than later.

The emergency provisions meeting in government is happening tomorrow. The royal assent required will occur during the same day, based on various articles previously posted. Once that is done, it's basically all a logistical matter.

Different countries are going to have VERY different reactions going forward, I think.

Like in the case of Canada, we have a huge landmass, but a comparatively small population, just over 37 million. If we "dodge the bullet" and don't get completely overwhelmed, manage to successfully flatten the curve and take "wartime measures" throughout to keep it under control, our own reaction will be, "Wow, well done, tough but we did it." And we'll have to look at rebuilding our economy along with the rest of the world.

If our neighbors down south get overwhelmed, that can mean either a huge number of changes going forward, like taking the CDC seriously again and giving it a budget, restoring its Pandemic Team, etc. Or, they could fall back on the Sandy Hook reaction, "This is just America, with the unique character and size of our country, there's nothing we can do about it, we're not like Canada, with the smaller population and socialist government, so what they did could never work here..."

And they'll just try to recreate Trump's America all over again, but be even more angry and xenophobic.

a parallel universe
I saw on a map of confirmed cases that there are quite a few just in my smaller neighbourhood. It's good to see people taking it seriously around here. The grocery store has security making sure people one up 2 meters apart and only allow 50 people in the grocery store at a time. Most people have masks and gloves. Kinda surreal.

Except the big groups idiots who are all congregating at the beach down the street since they closed the bars. We get it. You want to socialize and have fun. So do I. But I also want to get my job back and life to get back to normal. That kinda shit is pissing me the fuck off

It's my single day off in almost 2 weeks. Probably will be taking only single day offs since i work stocking shelves in Toronto, but we'll see. Our inventory levels are almost looking back up to nornmal except the fresh eggs, which we have a hard time keeping decently stocked even on normal days!

I also have access to cashing people out during the overnight hours so that night personnel can make essential purchases while avoiding the crowds.

Even though I am getting the extra $2/hour pay, wouldn't hurt if I got a littttle bit more. ;D

As for social life: I'm a homebody anyway and would prefer to hang out at home and make art or play videogames and online message my friends, so I'm made for this lockdown situation!! But too bad..

If we get some form of UBI and debt freeze, I hope it applies to me as well despite my actual employment income.

My prediction is that Trudeau will announce emergency UBI package with debt/housing payment/essential payments freeze. No one will be allowed to evict anyone for 12 months probably except in cases of illegal activity such as arson, violence, or health hazard.

I have to keep going to work but I say we lock it down. All businesses except grocery stores. Everyone in their houses except for between a certain time each day depending on where you live to shop...
I dont know how they can do it but Im sure theyve talked over a lot of options. I don't want to start escalating like the us has and Im sure the government doesnt want to either.

Quebec had 400 new ones, backlogged stuff

Oh, for some reason, I thought we were at like 1700 even with the Quebec backlog update this morning. I was just worried for a second with the call out of "hundreds in BC" and thought I'd missed something. We already know we're at 472 haha, but we only had 48 today! I thought I'd missed a devastating update or something in the past few hours.

I'm totally with you. I work in a government department and they deemed us essential. Some of us beg to differ but in the end we still need to go to work. It's really dumb.

Proper containment with everyone taking this seriously will means this will all be over sooner. Once community level transmissions are eliminated, then society can start gradually opening up again. It's not impossible.

I'm glad Trudeau has been keeping communication open with the provinces. It actually feels like Ontario and Canada are working in step for once in the past few years.

I work in a warehouse north of Brampton Ontario shipping some crap out. Really don't want to get more specific than that.

Are warehouses essential? Supervisor tried to justify it to us that we are considered essential. Let's just say it's not food or personal hygiene. One example was that there was a Lego warehouse still operating.

But yeah, I wonder how far reaching this is.

Bad times here. I work in food processing (seafood specifically) and they extended our season last week. The really shitty thing is they've started cramming more people in with us despite the NB Government mandate to make all attempts to keep people reasonably apart. Management refuse to come downstairs to the production floor anymore, and today they sent a guy home for attending a funeral that had a bunch of people who flew in for it. The ridiculous part is that they didn't send home the two guys who drove in with him (nearly an hour trip) to work...one of which works two feet away from me, and we're face to face. A few of us complained and were told we were fine.

Strongly considering just taking my chances and walking out. They can't really fire me for it given the circumstances, but they can find another excuse to do it, I'm sure.

Aside from that I'm very happy with what our government here in NB have been doing, and thankfully our case numbers seem steady. Still, you see people not following the regulations. I expect Trudeau to announce the Emergency Measures Act in the not too distant future.
