May said the primary conditions for Green support of a minority government are adherence to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change position — that global warming must be held below a 1.5 C increase above pre-industrial levels — and a pledge for a "dramatic transformational commitment" to cut carbon emissions in Canada.

"We will not, even for a first speech from the throne confidence vote, work with any party that isn't fully committed to going off fossil fuels quickly," May said.

"That means you can't be building any pipelines, you can't be fracking, you have to cancel the LNG (liquid natural gas) plant in Kitimat, you have to actually mean what you say — that we are committed to cutting 60 per cent of greenhouse gases by 2030."

On non-environmental issues, May cited social justice proposals as a priority for the Greens. She said the proposals make the Greens "more progressive" than the New Democratic Party.

Key proposals are national pharmacare, a guaranteed livable income, free tuition for post-secondary students, elimination of existing student debt and a federal investment in colleges and universities.

They would increase revenues by hiking corporate taxes on large companies, such as banks and internet giants, but not on small or medium-sized businesses. They would cancel the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and halt fossil fuel industry subsidies.

The Greens have submitted their election platform to the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) for inspection and advice before announcing costed details. But May has promised that her party would balance the federal budget over five years. Their numbers are not available until after PBO inspection.
The elevation of politics would be amazing if Greens were Opposition to the Liberals. Not just in Commons but in common.
Just gotta be careful they don't win a majority this time.

The Cons are dumb. All they had to do to win this election was from day one say they would have only one promise to make sure they would carry it out: abolish the GST and a freeze on income tax rate for ten years. Any time any question is asked you pivot back to this. Done, victory, with a majority.

Carbon tax? Lol. People have no idea what that is.

No one is going to abolish the GST. And Brian Mulroney introduced the GST. Lol

You can't cancel the TransMountain Expansion and the LNG plant unless you want China to sue Canada into bankruptcy.

And I'd love to see the numbers on how they'll do all that in their platform and balance the budget in 5 years.

They represent that voice in Canada that's willing to take the hit! lol
They better have some good plans for transitioning Alberta that they can talk to people there about.
It might help Liberals in Alberta. Certainly help Alberta petroleum see how much Liberals are their friends.

PBO platform numbers when they're released should be fun. A new toy!

Doesn't matter. Just it by half. Whatever the case, they would win. Saying you'll cut taxes is all it takes to win.

That seems borderline ridiculous. For 2016-2017 GST was valued at 11,7% of the government revenue for that year out of 293.5 billions. So you will need to find 30 billions to balance the budget in the same conditions. Even if you Doug Ford it won't work.

That's naive, it's not about being willing, it's that we can't take that kind of financial settlement which will award them all present and future losses. Plus the arbitrator will just make us build the pipeline anyway.

And they're not going to balance the budget in 5 years with that either.

May knows this and is lying to voters anyway.

Freezing the income tax rate isn't a tax cut....

Fuck China

I didn't know they were involved.
Now I want Trans Mountain cancelled

No no.

Trudeau bought the pipeline not because he's a hypocrite centrist. He bought it prevent a much bigger lawsuit. And at least we own the pipeline not China.

Harper sold us out in 2014, Trudeau has been navigating a minefield holding onto our sovereignty.

If Smeer wins, him and Kenney will make sure China can stripmine the country for resources, as little environmental regulation in the way as possible, boot the natives off and they're not obliged to hire Canadians either.

May knows this and is spewing BS.

It's just to make sure people won't say you'll make up for the loss of revenue through an income tax increase.

Plus dropping or reducing the GST is something people of all classes would end up being attracted to.

And it doesn't matter if it creates a deficit, the answer to that is always that the government is too big and wasting too much money and they'll cut in the waste.

Cons are dumb, outplayed, taking the very long way around. Only hope they have is a Green Wave to squeeze their way in.

Remember how 20 years ago we could have done something about China?

betterdwelling.com

CSIS Warns of Chinese Influence On Canadian Real Estate...20 Years Ago - Better Dwelling

The 20 year old RCMP and CSIS report Sidewinder, warned China was purchasing Canadian real estate to control the economic levers of Canada.

Remember when the RCMP and CSIS accused the Chinese government of purchasing real estate in Canadian urban centers as a method of threatening Canada? No? That's because the recommendations from a former classified program called Sidewinder was abandoned. All documents were ordered destroyed, and buried in 1997 by the Liberal government. Turns out we were as anxious to build ties with China then as we are now. Despite our national spy services advising the government that, well…this would happen to real estate.

Yeah good times.

Canada is just going to be the resource supply for China for the next few decades at least.

Hopefully they leave some for us lol.

This is interesting. I don't have TV so I'm late on this.

The SNC just doesn't hold a lot of traction (especially Quebec). I'm wondering how much of those numbers are contributed along party lines, but may help form the narrative of the election.

I still expect these questions to be brought up during the debates, so it's a wait and see if this still resonates with people.

Further, the "jobs" question is interesting as if this were to go the other way the critique would ben that the government did not use all the tools necessary to save those jobs. Something along the lines of the Saudi Arms deal. A political football as so many jobs are banking on selling weapons to a brutal regime.

On another note. Andray keeping tabs on anti-immigrant sentiment from conservative leaning publications. That Vancouver Sun article was not by accident or an anomaly.

Part of a larger thread but interesting.

Yeah I did this in 2015 when I was living in Japan. You can use your citizenship card if you have one of those instead of the birth certificate.

Fastest G7 economy is US and Canada and over 2% since 2016. Canada was #1 in 2017 but US was #1 in 2018

I don't think Trudeau has much control over that as majority of our exports go to the US anyways regardless of who is PM.

His handling of NAFTA 2 talks was pretty good though

Not only that, even if it was true what they said, how the fuck is Scheer going to du better with less experience

He's gonna Brexit our way to prosperity.

Speaking of Brexit. Here's an interesting piece about the lack of foreign policy discussions in Canadian elections.

Good read.

Global participation will be key to Canada's success in the coming decades especially in the face of authoritarian/populist sentiments.

Ironically a lot of it coming from the US.

I feel like Alberta is up to no good. GTA residence better kick him out if he campaigns here in Ontario.

Calling Trudeau inexperienced has always been about scaring older voters by making him seem too young, which you can't say out loud because it would be controversial.

According to a weekly rolling poll by Nanos Research that came out last week, the Liberals had the support of 35.4 per cent of Canadians, the Conservatives 31.2 per cent, the NDP 15.6 per cent, and the Green Party had the support of 10.2 per cent. The poll of 1,000 Canadians had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

In the vote-rich province of Ontario, with 121 electoral seats, the Liberals were the choice of 40 per cent of Ontarians, the Conservatives 32.3 per cent, the NDP 16.9 per cent, and the Green Party had the nod of 9.2 per cent of residents in the province.

In Quebec, with 78 electoral seats, the second highest in the country, the Liberals had a whopping 24-percentage points lead over the second-place Bloc Québécois with 42 per cent and 17.9 per cent support, respectively. The Conservatives were running a close third with 15.4 per cent support, the NDP 12.1 per cent, and the Green Party were the choice of 9.5 per cent of Quebecers.

Conversely, the Conservatives had a massive lead over the second-place Liberals in the three Prairie provinces with 47.5 per cent and 20.9 per cent support, respectively. The three provinces, including Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, carried a combined total of 62 electoral seats. The third-place NDP had the support of 19.2 per cent, and the Green Party was the choice of eight per cent of Canadians living in the Prairies.

In the four Atlantic provinces, with the combined total of 32 electoral seats, the Conservatives and Liberals were tied within a margin of error, with 38.5 and 36.9 per cent support, respectively. The Green Party had the support of 12.7 per cent and the NDP 7.9 per cent.

In British Columbia, which is expected to be a key battleground in the upcoming election with four-way splits, the Liberals were leading the pack with 36 per cent support, followed by the Conservatives with 26 per cent. The NDP support was at 19 per cent and the Green Party 15 per cent.

The poll also suggested that 46.7 per cent of Canadians think that Mr. Trudeau has qualities of a good political leader compared to second-place Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (Saanich-Gulf Islands, B.C.), who had the approval of 40.3 per cent. Mr. Scheer was the choice of 36.6 per cent and Mr. Singh had the support of 28.6 per cent of Canadians.

LPC at 40% in ON, 42% QC, 37% ATL, 36% BC

Bruh if what Nanos is reporting is true, the Cons are trailing badly. We haven't even got to debates and campaigns yet, where Scheer will no doubt prove to be a jobber

The risk of early conservative vote splitting between Scheer and Bernier was probably one of the factors the Liberals considered when they decided to have a very short election campaign.

Nantel is not a candidate you would want

He's a Bloc lifer who was picked by TomAss Mulcair as NDP candidate for St_Hubert, won in 2015 but then crossed the floor to the Greens when he saw public opinion in Quebec turn against religious head gear.

Nantel is not a man of conviction, he just wants a public paycheck

St-Hubert will either go back to Bloc or go Liberal

How juvenile and stupid. Sounds like you'd listen to Radio X all day long.

Schools are a successful and popular core part of our public services. Conservatives are ideologically opposed to public services and schools are a successful example of social democracy that doesn't fit with their ideology. Removing the word 'public' from schools obfuscates and hides this example of successful public works and places private schools on the same level as public schools. This is probably a first step toward treating private and public schools more evenly, either defunding public schools or directing public money toward private schools.

Greens firing a loud shot across the harbour.
Brilliant announcement by May. The anti-abortion vote was disenfranchised by Cons recently. I wonder if it's a response to an article about nuns in SK being concerned about climate change.
Keeps greens at the top of news cycle with a chance to talk about no whipping votes and calmly clarify stance(women have access to safe abortion) and talk about their candidates positions. Not sure if there is any green candidate that would care to open up the abortion debate to help fight climate change in 2019

Green Party won't ban members from trying to reopen abortion debate, says May

Well they're more honest than Scheer at least.

Wow.

I'm not sure what to say. They keep hitting new lows. She literally is Jill Stein. I'm anxiously awaiting a photo of her and Putin sitting together at a dinner table.

Lol. Ol' gurl takes in thousands of votes the cons had in their pocket and you're complaining. Think they were going to vote Lib or NDP?

And it should help galvanize what's left of the NDP flotilla. Still not sure if they're going to make it.
