This was revealed during the Recent Q&A for 2nd Quarter of Fiscal Year 2018-2019 . It is still in Japanese so I used Google Translation for that

I would like to ask about the current situation of "MHW".
As of the end of September 2018, we have sold 10.7 million copies in total, and about 70% of the total is sold abroad. In Japan, teenagers are increasing more than our expectation.

Here is the Full Q&A for anyone interested , but have in mind that it is all in Japanese

http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/data/explanation.html

For the ones who wants to Compare it to Steam spy Estimations , Then Steamspy reported 3.7M as of 30 Sep 2018 for the PC version of the game which was released 9 August 2018

The game was at 8.3M as of 30 June 2018 , So Officially it gained 2.4M from 30 June to 30 Sep

So Steam sales should account for about 2 million units, right (since the game probably didn't completely stop selling on PS4/XB1)? That's a great performance.

Never would have believed those numbers in my wildest dreams a year ago. In fact, I'm fairly certain I scoffed at the notion late last year / early this year.

Game is so great, very well deserved success.

Time to spend some of that money with more updates Capcom. It's only taking longer and longer to receive new monsters.

I'm completely surprised by the PC sales.
Late port, full priced, on top of not having content parity with console versions, bugged multiplayer at launch and terrible regional pricing.
MHW is already one of the most successful Japanese game on Steam.

I must admit that I was completely wrong in saying that it would never achieve such numbers based on sales for previous games in the franchise.

If it's really that far off, this makes Steamspy even less reliable than VGChartz.

Monstrous PC sales! Incredible performance for a late port!

Who would ever have thought that the 10 million estimate would actually come to pass!? That analyst deserves a raise and a real pat on the back!

Knew that 5m figure was too much. No way it sold another 3m in October. Still huge for a late port and well deserved.

Where is my damn G rank Capcom?

The same thing happened with GTA V but on a much bigger scale, minus tbe bugged multiplayer.

I hope that Capcom doesn't make a habit out of delayed PC releases like Rockstar does.

I did my part and bought an Xbox copy and a PC copy (both of them were the deluxe version too). GG Capcom.

I also did my part with the double dip on PC and then never playing that version haha.

Hopefully the success means they're able to expand the team make some plans.

So can we stop with the whole "steamspy's new model is as accurate as before" now?
Because it's clearly not.

Congrats to Capcom. Hopefully they'll support the game better in the future, or its sequel at least.

To be entirely correct those numbers are from a month ago. There was a sale on Steam shortly after those numbers and before the 5Mio+ thread was made. I don't quite believe it sold 3 millions during that, but just saying that the numbers are old.
But also:

I also find it difficult to really trust nuSteamSpy.

these numbers from capcom are a month behind.
It's in the OP, this isn't being compared to Steamspy current numbers:

We actually got 3 posts before an original and clever legs joke? I'm impressed.

But they announced the 10 million mark on August 20 - only selling 0.7 million more in a months time seems kinda low based on how it was constantly on top of the steam charts.

http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/news/html/e180820.html

from Aug 9 to Aug 20 -> in 11 days, 2 million sold

and then Aug 20 -> Sept 30 -> 40 days, only 0.7 million ?

it only recently dropped from the top 10 sellers.
