Or upgrades that "fixed" an awful design. Your choice.

In my opinion Metabee from Medabots looked perfect

But once he was upgraded he looked like total garbage

On the flip side I think Shield Liger from Zoids looked terrible

But upgrading into Blade Liger helped it quite a bit

What are other examples of one or the other?

2013 and beyond Lara Croft is such a garbage character on her own, in both design and personality, and then you realize that she's supposed to replace one of the best video game protagonists of all time....

Rex and Nia from Xenoblade 2.

With Rex, I already thought his normal design was awful. The Master Driver design is basically his old outfit but with all these over-the-top space armor extensions on it, which I think makes him look even sillier in the end. I wish they straight up gave him a new outfit instead of modifying his old one.

As for Nia, I actually liked her design but her true form adds some fanservice to her design that wasn't there before and I don't think it was super necessary? I like the general aesthetic of her outfit but the small leotard seems like an odd shift for her character design.
