Most people didn't care (everyone who wasn't a nostalgic fanboy) and it without it the rest of the world had one less reason to make fun of superman.
The 4th Tom was dumb as shit but the newest design looks good.
I think this thread is kind of not following it's opening statement.
It's not about characters who are rebooted with an artstyle you're not as big of a fan of. It's not about characters who get older and thus don't look as cool as they did as teenagers when the story primarily happened.
This is about specific power upgrades within continuity that looks ugly.

This is Kamen Rider OOOs in his base TaToBa form. This is the form he starts off as and the form that most regularly shows up in marketing.
He obtains a large slate of forms over the course of the show, all styled on a variety of animals. In the actual show the final power-up he acquires is a purple one based on dinosaurs, but Toei does not canonically consider that to be OOOs' true final upgrade form. It's this monstrosity instead:

I honestly loved it. It was a necessary evil. Taker became too worked up in the late 90's and everyone told him to tone his method acting down. He got pissed and said fuck it, and showed up in PJs lol.

Like yeah, I get it, he get more human as he gets closer to perfection, but fuck, Imperfect Cell was just so creepy, so disturbing,so adorable and so different from anything else in Dragon Ball to that point that I can't help but feel incredibly disappointed at the relatively generic designs that followed. Though at the very least, they're miles better than what Dragon Ball Online and Dragon Ball Heroes did to him...

I want Star Lord's original DnA helmet to appear in the MCU so badly. Whether it's a new director or a rehired Gunn for GotG3, just have Quill find it and put it on top of his mask.
A couple of things come to mind for me, very similarly themed...
Beast Wars
- Transmetal Cheetor to Transmetal II Cheetor - I always thought the first rendition was a super slick look, while the "upgrade" went a bit too far into the feral direction for me.
Beast Machines
- Virtually all of the new forms sucked for the Maximals, I did like the Vehicons though! Megatron's new look was great (although we lost his 'yeeeees' moments), Waspinator to Thrust, Rhinox to Tankor, even Silverbolt to Jetstorm (if memory serves)!

Hated that, I loved this concept and how they're terrible at basic redesign and regarding. Was into it.

I did enjoy the series, but not the design of Venom. I think agent venom is the only design of the character I actually like.
A little disingenuous to use Halo 2 Anniversary stuff IMO, but I generally agree.
I have a problem with Iron Man suits in the MCU. I love the first ones but after Avengers 1 every upgraded version seems off. Specially the last one with nananomachines or something. I also dislike mark 42 and its ehole remote control idea. I really miss the idea he is a robust metal man, a machine man, a walking waepon.
The current Venom book by Cates and Stegman is playing straight into the horror aspect of the original design and it's fantastic.

I actually really love this design for exactly those reasons - it's just so... bad. It makes me uncomfortable to look at. So much of Dragon Ball transformation is just "get slimmer/handsomer/cooler," but for Cell, making an ultimate version that's just a deformed biological nightmare works for me.
Idk if this one counts because it's technically not an upgrade, but I never did like Toei switching from Liner Form to Chou Climax Form for Den-O's final form.

Macross valks get it from every side.
In robotech we're supposed to believe technology goes from the macross valkyries to the Sparta hover tanks and the almost super deformed Logans.
In macross, the designs just get more and more complex and just uglier and uglier. The VF-1 valk is still the best Valkyrie design IMHO.

I didn't mind the new daleks to be honest. It reminds me of how the original daleks were the high contrast colors to define them in black and white.
