China said it will begin applying its so-called social credit system to flights and trains and stop people who have committed misdeeds from taking such transport for up to a year.

People who would be put on the restricted lists included those found to have committed acts like spreading false information about terrorism and causing trouble on flights, as well as those who used expired tickets or smoked on trains, according to two statements issued on the National Development and Reform Commission's website on Friday.

Those found to have committed financial wrongdoings, such as employers who failed to pay social insurance or people who have failed to pay fines, would also face these restrictions, said the statements which were dated March 2.

It added that the rules would come into effect on May 1.

The move is in line with President's Xi Jinping's plan to construct a social credit system based on the principle of "once untrustworthy, always restricted", said one of the notices which was signed by eight ministries, including the country's aviation regulator and the Supreme People's Court.

I can't help but mentally add automobiles to that title

This combined with the whole president for life thing is quite a sneak peak at the future.

It makes sense for things like stopping people who have spread false terrorism info, but it could easily be a downhill slope into manipulating how society should behave

If there was a way this wouldn't be horribly abused from day 1 I would be able to understand, but it will be so there's no point in pretending it won't.

I mean, conceptually, sure, but it already sounds like it'll be employed in the broadest possible manner and is ripe for abuse.

everything i've read and heard about this sounds like straight-up nightmare shit. feel so bad for the people there. i suppose that in theory one could say this would fight against legitimately fake news dissemantors but in an increasingly authoritarian age its only going to marginalize everyone fighting against the decrees of the regime.

Whoa they are really taking the sesame credit deal into the dark territory everyone figured they would? Why am I not surprised. I could see something like that catching on elsewhere too eventually. Fuck that, I would be like the outcast tow truck lady from black mirror if it came to that shit.

I, for one, am confident that no Chinese authority would abuse this system in any conceivable way.

Hey listen, I think people who can't be socially acceptable shouldn't ride planes either, but clearly this is gunna be used to control the population more than anything.

Stuff like this makes me wonder how far is to far for censureship. Like, if (or when) the Chinese economy goes southward, I doubt people are going to put up with crap like this.

Boy, can't wait for the Donald to praise the way they do things in China! Maybe we can do this in the U.S. of A! Let's give it a try, a chance, what's the worst that could happen? I wonder why Russia hasn't yet. Russia is not condescending to its citizens' intelligence, Russia just kills them. Like Duterte.

Boy, what shit will we see in the next decades when the showdown finally unravels?

Obviously, the one party has proven itself impartial, and the continued safety of it's citizens is of primarly import. China will not tolerate the fake news epidemic like America has callouly done. Strength in unity, unity in strength!

Social credit is a post-judicial punishment that makes it objectively harder to reintegrate into society. As we've seen in America, restrictions that limit reintegration (like making it harder for convicts to get jobs or vote) just leads to high levels of recidivism. If you want people to do better, punish them and then push them along a better path, there is no point in publicly humiliating them for months on end.

Just another threat to dangle over the head of people to make them conform to the wishes of the totalitarian regime.

What constitutes terrorism for these governments though? I mean Israel for instance, charged a Palestinian girl with terrorism for slapping one it's soldiers. Shes no threat to civilians, she's not intending to cause harm, she's not a threat to anyone. Yet she's locked up as a terrorist.

In a place like China, where dissent is harshly pusished, how easy would it be to slap terrorism/misinformation on anyone the government simply don't like? Troubling to be honest.

I do like the idea of punishing offenders, god knows we have many of these delinquents here in the UK that are Inconsiderate of passengers and disrespectful of the vehicle/transport, so it does need to be tackled somehow, not sure reducing a humans social worth to a number is the right way.

1984 was not suppose to be a handbook..

It is fucking terrifying what there doing and the west is also adopting more and more of it also.

Won't be surprised if the UK doesn't do something similar. They very quickly adapt Chinese government methods but under the guise of safety and security. Look at the way they have adopted CCTV, monitoring of social media, controlling speech, this year they will start to ban Pornographic websites under the guise of 'culture', are trying to stop or ban end to end encryption and use of things like Whatsapp when they don't comply, they had installer millions of microchips in trash can to monitor what people throw away and recycle and how often etc. No this isn't necessarily commentary on recent things. Just that the line between authoritarian and dictatorial governments is being blurred when you see similar actions in freer societies under the guise of safety and security etc.

This is all going to come to a head against Xi. He may amass power, but he cannot control the world. Like we saw in the exodus of Hong Kong after 97, you will keep seeing people and capital flee the country. As citizens continue to get richer, more educated, it is getting harder and harder to control.
