UPDATE: Jason Schreier has published an article on Bloomburg.

I don't think this needs much introduction. As a content warning, this is a story from a survivor of sexual assault. The stories she reports took place from 2013-2015 (during his time at Obsidian), but her friends have witnessed him continuing his predatory behavior up until 2018 (when he started doing contract work on games like Prey and Divinity Original Sin 2). It's a lengthy thread, but if you've ever considered yourself a fan of his writing like I have, we owe it to the survivors to read it and believe them.

While we're at it, here's another man to add to the gaming industry predator garbage pile. Yesterday was the first time I said something publicly about this, and I'm done being silent, despite that fuckstick in the reply telling me to shut up. I WILL NOT. Thread:

I witnessed, and experienced, his behavior firsthand. He got me blackout drunk on Midori Sours (on the company dime). He and two friends somehow got me back to my room, where he pounced in front of the other guys. They left after a few moments (also drunk), and one of them-

-told me what he had witnessed the next evening. I had very vague impressions that someone had made out with me when I woke up that morning, but thought it was a dream. When I asked Chris about it, he told me that I had eventually refused him. When more of the night came back-

-to me, I realized the ONLY reason I was able to refuse him in my blackout stupor was because I was on my period that weekend. The ONLY reason. (The shame society places on menstruation actually came in handy for once, smdh.) Other nights, I watched him do the same to-

-other girls, some of whom looked FAR younger than me in my late 20s (at the time, and I have always looked young for my age). He would disappear with one or another, come back, then come back to me. The entire con. I did not get drunk with him again, and he was a gentleman-

-about my refusals, including the one where I was drunk off my ass, and when he escorted me to the subway station at 4:30am the morning I left to go home. That kind behavior is what not only kept me in denial about what was actually going on, but drove me to introduce him to-

-one of my best friends, who then endured over a year of heartache, gaslighting, and emotional abuse at his hands. It was much easier to see then, and ALL of us who knew what was going on told her to get out. Eventually, she did, but not before he raged out of a restaurant-

-drunk as fuck (as usual), leaving her behind, after which point she wandered the downtown streets of a major convention city late at night, ALONE, looking for him because she was worried he would get hurt due to how drunk he was. This was my breaking point.

I went to two men I worked with at this convention and reported the situation. Interestingly enough, they were already discussing his terrible behavior when I found them together to report it. With my testimony added, he was blacklisted right then and there.

His behavior didn't stop, though. If anything, it got worse. It took years for his employer to finally fire him (I honestly don't recall the exact reason he was given, it was a while ago and I wasn't there personally - this was relayed to me by a friend who also worked there).

He moved to other studios. Other projects. Other conventions until they stopped inviting him on their own accord (whether due to behavior or relevance, I don't know). I pushed him out of my memory, as did my dear friends, and we only discussed our anger and disgust if he-

-happened to come up. I've said something to some friends in journalism if he came up. Emily reached out to me after seeing my tweet to apologize. For what, I asked her? She didn't know what he was like and carried no fault in this. Most didn't know unless they saw it.

Still no one said anything except in closed circles. *I* didn't say anything except in closed circles to warn people about his behavior. I have no idea if he's remotely better than he was then, but given how protected he's been from true consequences for his actions, I doubt it.

The actions I witnessed myself occurred between 2013 and 2015. Those I was told by friends who remained around him occurred up until 2017 or 2018. This was recent. Who knows how long it had been occurring before then; he was clearly no stranger to doing this when I met him.

I didn't bother blowing this up until today due to work being insane all week, but I've got the time now. Chris Avellone is an abusive, abrasive, conniving sexual predator. People tried to get him help. He refused it and continued. Stop glorifying him.

EDIT: A friend of the Twitter author is sharing her story.

I've never admitted this on main, but he groped me repeatedly at D*C 2014, by Pulse. Every time you or his gf weren't looking, his hand was on my ass & he was trying to get me to go to his room. I told him I don't fuck my friends' boyfriends & to stay the fuck away from me...

EDIT 2: Avellone has been removed from the upcoming RPG Waylanders and his work will be re-examined by the game's lead writer.

Don't shut up. Speak up. I had no idea about Chris until I saw Karissa's comment the other day, at which point I reached out to her privately with my support. Now allow me to do so publicly. I believe you and I stand with you. Also Chris left The Waylanders this past week.

And for the record, I'm the lead writer of Waylanders, and Chris only wrote a few quests in the game. Which I'm now gonna take an extra look at.

Additionally, Avellone has been removed from Dying Light 2 and Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 (source: Techland and Paradox official statements).

EDIT 3: A survivor shared a NSFW text from Avellone in 2013, if there were any lingering doubts about his behavior.

Fuck

Edit: Just read the whole thing and that is terrible. I've somewhat followed him for a couple years now since I learned that I loved quite a few games he had worked on.

He was on the Giant Bomb E3 Night Show last year in a segment I've rewatched a couple times but now ugh.

Wow that's awful.
I remember seeing some things about him some years back, but I can't remember what they were.

I mean, he's been somewhat active on RPG Codex over the years (while having essentially no online presence elsewhere), so I've always considered him suspect at best.

I remember seeing some things about him some years back, but I can't remember what they were.

I always did find it skeevy that he started to appeal to a forum crowd who calls him MCA as in "Master Chris Avellone". And threatening to sue Obsidian over something I can't remember, but he spoke like he was some kind of crusader: "I have sworn to fight evil and I will not hesitate to do so".

Those really should have been warning signs, looking back. Sigh.

Ah yeah, that was the name of the forum. Guess I blocked it out for good reason. x_x

From vaguely following the CRPG scene for the last five years or so, I'm not exactly shocked to hear stories about Chris Avellone behaving badly. This particular kind of behavior, though... ugh. Though I guess at this point I shouldn't be surprised at this kind of thing at all.

"Funny" thing is, I don't think he's had a steady gig for years; he just seems to float around doing some kind of nebulous "consulting" on random projects. I don't know if he even has anyone who would need to cut ties with him...

I loved his work in KOTOR II, Planescape Torment, Fallout: New Vegas, and recently Jedi: Fallen Order. This is very upsetting to me, he was one of my favorite gaming writers out there. Horrible stuff.

Woah that's extremely disappointing to hear considering how good KOTOR II was.

I hear you. And I'm more than certain that when topics asking for CRPG recommendations appear, Planescape Torment is the first reply on most people's lips. I hope we can use this opportunity to let another title take its place going forward.

Whoops, my mistake. Don't know where I got the idea.

This isnt surprising at all and has been a real head scratcher for me why this guy keeps getting propped up on the pedestal over the years. I mean he went ape shit on folks a couple years back in a real unprofessional way and that should have been a clue. I guess rpg-nazi-codex putting in that real work you know.

I'm still waiting for the explanation of why no major gaming outlet ever did a story on "hey this dude who works on like on every fucking crowdfunded crpg" also hangs out at a place where people have forums signatures saying shit like "all niggers must hang".

Definitely feel like there was going to be a red flag at some point when Avellone stuck around RPGCodex as long as he did (especially airing his grievances with his former employers on it.) That place is the forum equivalent of dipping your hand in a bucket of sewage while being yelled at by a bunch of nazis about how you're a genetically inferior (insert ethnic slur here) because sometimes you like fast travel and quest markers. It's all the distilled hatred, self-loathing, and insanity of the dark parts of the internet with the added benefit of being full of people who are comically elitist and shitty about RPGs.

Yikes. What a piece of shit. Given the other stuff being mentioned in this thread it's absolutely wild that Techland would hype his role in Dying Light 2, let alone hire him in the first place.

I remember when someone from RPG Codex interviewed the new members of Divinity Original Sin 2's writing team pre-release, and the transcription the user posted was pretty much exactly what an agenda looks like. The quotes about gameplay mechanics and such were normal fare, just direct info straight from the team. But when the transcription reached the parts about the new narrative systems like romance, suddenly the quotes from the writing team was full of stuttering, pauses, and ellipses, and it was made to look like the team abruptly lost confidence in what they were saying.

Later, I ended up learning a lot more godawful and toxic behaviour about that site that turned me away for good, but that was my first real clue that there was going to be nothing of worth found there.

Because that would require actual journalist work and lol at expecting that from the gaming media.

Unfortunate, but honestly his behavior online over the last few years was a real eye opener in terms of how deep up his own ass he is. That combined with his willingness to hang around RPGCodex, makes this news a lot less surprising than it might have been.

I guess this isn't terribly surprising considering his behaviour otherwise, to find out that he's also a sexual predator.

Oh well, scratch off a few games off that want-to-play list.

Damn, this looks bad. I also somehow missed the fact that his online persona is present only in the most terrible places. Great fan of his work, but I hope he gets criminally charged and never work on a game again.

Well fuck.

Wasn't his split with Obsidian really messy, and he ended up talking shit about the company? This puts that situation in relief.

Definitely lurked there a few times in my younger years (i.e. pre-2016) before deciding that no amount of vaguely informed discussion on RPGs was worth wading through hateful garbage in literally every thread. There's probably a glib comment someone could make about how entrenched, regressive ideas on game design somehow extend to society as a whole, but honestly I think I'd just be okay if there were more dedicated RPG spaces on the internet that weren't crawling with nazi incel chuds.

Wow, sorry to hear she and others went through that. Good to hear Chris Avellone got banned from some conventions. Hopefully more is done to stop him from preying on more.

Hope outlets start reporting on this.

He's a great writer and has written some of my absolute favourite video game narratives, but ugh...

I also didn't know about the RPG Codex stuff (that he's on it, not that the site is a bigoted hellhole, I knew that). Fuck Chris Avellone.

Well fuck.

Yeah, that was when I started to no longer follow Avellone's work. The way he threw Obsidian under the bus was disgusting and IIRC many people (even on here) just blindly accepted the bile he was spewing.

Wow that thread is hard to read. I won't pretend I never liked his work, but he's just a disgusting creep. Other outlets need to cover this. It is so frustrating to hear how many of these predators in the entertainment industries are known but allowed to do what they please. It makes the people who have the courage call them out even braver. I'm glad at least one convention banned him, at the very least.

The amount of games this creep worked on that I have loved in the past is sickening.

Fuck off, Chris. Let's elevate writers in the industry who aren't abusive sex predators.

Ever since he left Obsidian I thought he was really unprofessional, but people had him on a pedestal and blamed Obsidian for everything.

This doesn't surprise me tbh.

Here are the upcoming games he's involved in:

System Shock remake
Dying Light 2
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2

For anyone interested in not financially supporting him in any way.

Considering he worked on contract for all of those (I think) I doubt he'd be getting royalty payments or anything from those games.
