Seems relevant considering the report rumor that Square Enix was “slightly panicking” about FF16 preorders compared to 15.

Hard to glean much from this since digital is in a far different place than it was when XV came out. Also less platforms.

Unsurprising considering the exclusivity, higher digital ratio and FFXV being a much more hyped up game for the general audience. FFXVI is still the better game by far though.

Having in mind 2016 was nearly a decade ago and, since then, pandemics and all, really changed the habits (in this case accelerated, as digital was already "becoming the norm", anyways).

It was expected physical difference would be huge. XV was also multi from get go, if memory still serves me something.

Digital yeah, and also FFXV released on 2 platforms at once, so...
FFVII Remake sold roughly 60k copies in April 2020 which was PS4 only at the time with a 108M PS4 install base. PS5 is at roughly 40M install base and sold 30k physical copies. I'm not sure if digital v physical is radically different for then vs now on PS. Seems approximately comparable.

I wonder if it sells well digitally. I feel like the hype was there pre-launch, especially after the demo.

XV was certainly huge at launch, never expected XVI to surprass it, even comparing XV PS only sales. Still I'm sure it will do fine after all has been said.

So, so curious about Japan physical. I don't think it'll happen but sub-200k will cause meltdowns. See you on Thursday.

damn, so many more people moved to digital
Idk, its just the older I started to get Ive prioritized less about collections and more about "experiences". As long as I played something and enjoyed it, I dont typically need to own a physical copy, just happy I had the time with it. LoU2, GoW2, ToTK, and FFXVI all purchased digitally now, crazy.

It's weird that 15 was some behemoth, I always considered it some lame thing that lurched to release after eons of dev hell. Meanwhile this game comes in red hot and people give it a shrug? As a wise man once said...

..... whatever

Turns out making a multiplatform franchise suddenly exclusive to one platform leads to less people buying the games.

Sony's sales data suggests PS5 users are way more digital favored than the previous generation. Consumer habits are shifting towards digital more quickly than before which is why we're seeing some major releases skip the physical copy route altogether now.

I guess people really don't care about the prices any more if the hype is big enough. £70 for digital when there is so often a cheaper physical alternative for new releases these days is hard for me to understand. I feel like it's less of a common thing for physical to be cheaper than digital on release day in the US (tell me if I'm wrong) but it has always been that way in the UK.

Maybe having it exclusive to a new console which still lacks a large variety of killer apps wasn't the brightest idea.

Yeah digital sales would play a huge role epsecially on currnet gen consoles so physicals would be lower. Only Switch has relatively high physical sales but even then i think digital is still higher.

Way to grow your audience square.

Also, hard to appeal to western audiences with zero people of color. Sega needs to pounce.

Edit also Dring says above and before PS is the least digital platform percentage.

That's normal for UK charts at this point with the shift to digital. I even went digital for FF16 since my copy was going to be delayed.

The demo got like 10M downloads too, so I wouldn't really view this as a flop or indicative that the game failed because it was an exclusive lol

It was downloaded over 1 million times, not 10.
