Thanks for the help, LuxCommander (and have a good mass, MarioLee)!

Anybody else got any insight? DarkDetective, you've mostly talked about NT stuff but you're pretty Biblically well-versed. Got any info you're able to share on this one?
I don't have time to look well into the topic in the coming couple of days due to exam week. I'll take a look at LuxCommander's big chunk of text above when I'm done with all university stuff, and see if I have anything to add to the subject. :)

I'm not an encyclopedia with tons of information available right off the bat. I usually take a couple of hours to research a topic (like I did with that previous post), so it takes quite a lot of time.

Thanks for the replies! I appreciate your words, LuxCommander. I'll keep the praying aspect in mind. Being honest I was primarily focused on just making sure that people didn't get the wrong idea about the Bible rather than full Gospel preaching-- hopefully that focused approach beats fruit. Looks like I'll have to do a bit more research into Levitical proclamations on slavery to dig into this one.

And DarkDetective, take however much time you need. It stopped being a time-sensitive thing well before I even posted about it.

Frankly, I'm uncertain if I should reply to the thread proper. It's dead and moved past that point. But I will still contact this poster. I guess we can keep the digging we do in reserve for next time. There's always a next time.

Christmas Lent starts tomorrow for Orthodox Christians.

For those who don't know, there are four fasting periods in the Orthodox church
(1) 50 days for Easter Lent
(2) 2 weeks in June. (commemorating St. Peter and St. Paul)
(3) 2 weeks in August (for the Dormition of the Theotokos)
(4) 40 days for Christmas Lent.
Plus every Wednesday and Friday and 5 Feast Days throughout the year.

All up, we fast around 200 days in the year.

Christmas Lent is not as strict as Easter Lent. We abstain from all Meat and Dairy but Oil and Wine (Alcohol) are allowed except Wednesdays and Fridays.

We also have to fast the day before we take communion. So if you take communion every Sunday, it probably exceeds 7 months.
If you need to fast a day for each Saturday you would otherwise fast anyway, that would add 52 days if you take communion every week of the year. That would exceed the fasting period from 6 months and a couple of weeks (which I rounded to 7) to over 8 months. Whew.

Kinda ridiculous in my personal opinion, but people have the freedom to do whatever they think is right.

But these fasts aren't total fasts, are they? Obviously Christmas Lent isn't. Are they sunup to sun down fasts?

The timing of when we eat is not important, its abstinence from certain foods.

- Easter Lent is a strict fast. We abstain from: Meat & Eggs (anything with a backbone), Dairy, Oil and Wine (Alcohol). This is also the fast recommended for Wednesdays and Fridays outside fasting periods.
- During Christmas Lent we abstain from Meat, eggs and dairy only. Foods that are allowed during this period: Fish, Oil and Wine and everything else except on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Do you have daily mass? How would that work?
Ideally, there would be a Liturgy (our word for mass) every day and, in fact, the first Christians would take communion (and go to confession) daily.

However, the practically realities of 21st Century life are such that modern Orthodox churches only hold Liturgies during important Feast days, typically commemorating important events on the Christian calendar and Saints, and this depends on the Parish Priest's willingness to conduct a Liturgy.

Question for folks ITT, who are some developers that identify as christians? Who are considered the most serious about it? I'd imagine there are quite a lot actually.

I'm not from America, so I didn't celebrate Thanksgiving, but I had an incredible weekend. With a group of over 200 christian students from different cities, I went to a former monastry where we had a weekend together, and spent a lot of time on praise, prayer, study of God and of course earthly fun with each other. I had a great time, and I feel that I've become stronger in my faith this weekend.

Can't believe I forgot to add this thread to my sub list, especially since I'm currently experiencing a spiritual revival in my life thanks to my College's Catholic Student's Group/RCIA/Other stuff.

While Thanksgiving was a month ago for me(Gotta love the difference between the two holidays in the States/Canada), I got to spend Saturday Night at a Nightfever/Adoration event that was so good. It definitely reminded me that I need to spend time getting better at evangelizing because I had issues, but the serenity of the Adoration when I was praying/worshipping was amazing.

Wow, I had no clue this thread existed. I'm a christian as well. Almost 12/13 years now (I'm 28). I go to a Pentacostal church, with about 120 people.

Its a crazy time we're living in, and I loved what my pastor said last Sunday:

"Don't look to liberalism to save you. Don't look to conservatism to save you. Look to Jesus. Fox News and CNN are not your best friends. Stay focused on Jesus Christ and the holy spirit."

It was great to hear that, because I recognized a minor rift in our church after Trump was elected. Fortunately our church is super diverse, a melting pot. Jamaicans, Trinidadians, Koreans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Guyanese and of course Americans from all across the nation. People from Florida, to California to Canada.

What irks me though is that biblically speaking, I see some value on the red and the blue sides. If I lean to one end, I feel as though I'm disowning another. They're just so extreme though. Blue feels like a free for all in terms of anything really, and red just wants "everything" to stay status quo. I wish I could vote for Jesus in 2020.

Firefoxprime Welcome! :)
And pretty cool to see a converted Christian here!
Regarding politics, your pastor is right. I don't want to turn this thread into PoliERA, but to say one thing: the Bible tells us things would go downhill with the world. No political party nor political system will solve idealistic problems - mankind cannot stop hunger, poverty, hate, war, etc. It will never happen until Kingdom come (literally). Jesus will establish a kingdom of peace. However, until then, mankind will continue looking for "improvements" blah blah blah, but in the end, everything will collapse. That's still far away from us, so no worries now, and I don't want to discourage anyone to vote, but keep the above in mind and look forward to the second coming.

Welcome, welcome!

I'm not necessarily sure I agree with the conception of both sides having equal points (given that my two main Hangouts that I visit are Christianity and Socialism, in order of frequency, that'd figure) but I will say I agree with DarkDetective's view that human beings are fundamentally slated to fail until Jesus returns. I don't see this as a reason to stop trying to make things better, especially since any lasting improvement by its nature would seem to bring us closer to Christ, speaking logically (and since any lasting improvement would, by its nature, be edifying to everyone involved) but I still think our eventual failure is assured. I tend to think of it as, we get a lot of choice in how we, as a species, ultimately fail-- and we, as individuals, are afforded the chance to not follow in the failures of our society.

About the relationship of Christians to government, this statement from a recently arrested Chinese pastor has given me a lot of food for thought.

It's a difficult time, but Pastor Yi's behavior has managed to be an exemplar of... well, all the things he sought it to be an exemplar of. I genuinely do think that kind of contrition, and that kind of peace, is representative of the process of sanctification. Likely to be the greatest proof we have of a world to come-- one that speaks directly to the heart rather than manifested by worldly means.

Even though he's willing to die for Christ, and I wouldn't take that from him, I still hope he ends up OK.

I finished this book recently, and now I'm reading CS Lewis' Mere Christianity. Silence and Beauty is a powerful reflection on the themes of Endo's Silence, by a contemporary modern artist who relates the themes with his own life and experiences as an American Japanese artist who does Japanese style modern art. As a Protestant married to a Catholic, and an American who found his faith in Christ in Japan rather than in the States, his faith journey developed his thoughts on Japanese culture, the arts world, modern Japanese society, and the history of Christianity's influence on Japan. It's a fascinating read and I would recommend both this and Silence itself as important works for any Christian who is struggles with the mystery of suffering, and an interest in Japan as a society/culture.

Almost poked the thread myself last night, good to see you Auros!

Been super busy at work, thus my own personal absence. Since the last time I popped in I've gotten engaged and am currently in the process of finding a job at a different studio. I'm in the last round of interviews with my "Big Fish" that I've always wanted to work at. They are flying me out to Los Angeles for the whole ordeal, which is huge for me. The whole process has taken about a month so far, but for them it's crazy fast. I'm trusting and praying that everything works out however the Lord wants it to.

If it does, it means finding a new church home, so prayers would be greatly appreciated if things go well that I can find somewhere me and my fiance can get plugged into over there.

That's sometimes not the most straightforward question. Even 2 Christians that date can have vastly different views that almost seem incompatible. If you're having a hard time getting started, I would just get out there and get to know some people. Don't worry about some the larger compatibility issues (beliefs, kids, finances, etc.), Yet. Just my 2 cents.

Yup I'm still alive. Been rather busy with various things. Started teaching catechism at my parish on Sundays as a teaching assistant this year. It's pretty fulfilling both in terms of contributing to an active ministry, as well as learning more about my faith and reinforcing what I know about the foundations. We covered Bible authenticity, history, and the hows and whys of reading the living word yesterday. There was a lot of material provided but only limited time in the lesson, but I think we managed pretty well for our class.

We're entering into Lent this week, so it's a good time to do more reflection on ourselves, and where we are on our journey. I was asked to lead a session for the first week of Lent for my cell group, so I'm doing quite a bit of thinking the past few days. One of the things I want to do during Lent is to use ERA way less, if at all, during work. Lol.

Hope everyone elsehere has been doing well!

Lot of positive real life stuff going around, especially in terms of faith, so that's why I'm not posting a lot in here. Usually I'm focused on just a couple of topics on the Gaming side of the website anyway.

Finally passing my stage of cynism, i come to realize how important is catholic faith to people, its perfectly valid to believe there is a better life than this one 😢 if it helps many people pass through this world and gives them hope from the insecurities and worthlessnes of mundane life then God bless them and bless us all.
However it also saddens me for the ones that are hurt by faith, and the ones that might not be hurt, but it didn't help them to achieve true hapiness on this time.

I been enjoying coming back to church, though it really makes a difference who preaches and who are you going with

Christ is risen! Alleluia!
Amen to that! Hope everyone had fun. I stayed home, since I don't have a church, but I've been reading along to the final seven chapters of Matthew through the week in addition to my usual readings. It was an unusually great day where I got to spend time with a friend I don't see often enough, and just in general I've had a wonderful day so... I guess I feel blessed. It's not much, but it was still a great time.

This is so true. Church (especially a large church) can be a very lonely place to go if you don't have family or friends there.

Who have you been going with?
i went with a friend and her mom for a time, and to different church, cult-like, now sometimes with my parents though i really don't like to go the same ones they are used to, started to invite extended family wich helps.

I also started going to yoga classes wich have helped me a lot and im very happy going to, but its a different experience

well, not really in a bad way, more like quite excentric with everyone crawling on the floor, with rock music it was quite lively, but i didn't returned after stoping going with them, i thought about it but never went by myself.maybe i should try giving it another shot one day 🤔 my mom hates, hates there because she says there are faggots and other stuff and she hated when my dad was going before because they were going to 'take his money', but thats just my mom :^P
