What is Cities Skylines?

Cities: Skylines is a city-building game originally developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive. The console version however is ported by Tantalus Media.
The game is a single-player open-ended city-building simulation. Players engage in urban planning by controlling zoning, road placement, taxation, public services, and public transportation of an area. Players work to maintain various elements of the city, including its budget, health, employment, and pollution levels. Players are also able to maintain a city in a sandbox mode, which provides unrestricted creative freedom for the player.

Overview

  • Developer: Colossal Order and ported to console by Tantalus Media
  • Release: PC: March 10, 2015 Xbox One - April 21, 2017, PS4 - August 15, 2017 Digital & Physical
  • Price: 29,99$ - 39,99$

Other Features

  • Extensive water simulation with different water levels, so you can flood your cities with poorly placed dams
  • District creation and individual district policies, so you can divide your citizens into neat little parcels
  • Natural resources and industry specializations, so you can exploit the land to your own advantage
  • Actual public transportation lines with customization, so you can keep your citizens in motion
  • Several distinct terrain themes, so you can place your cities in various parts of the world
  • Left hand drive option, so you can make your citizens drive on the proper side of the road

Expansion Packs (PC Releases)

  • After Dark - 24 September 2015

    • First announced at Gamescom 2015, After Dark adds new unique buildings, including a casino and a luxury hotel, and settings for expanded tourism and leisure specializations. Its release coincided with a free patch adding a day-night cycle into the game.
  • Snowfall - 18 February 2016

    • Snowfall adds snow and other winter-themed elements, as well as trams/streetcars. Alongside this release, a free update to the game added a theme editor. This feature brought new graphics options that enabled players to create visually different worlds, such as an alien landscape. These customized game maps could then be uploaded to the Steam Workshop.
  • Match Day - 9 June 2016

    • Match Day was free DLC which added a football stadium.
  • Natural Disasters - 29 November 2016

    • At Gamescom in 2016, Natural Disasters was announced, which added natural disasters to the game, in addition to new disaster response and recovery services that the player could add to their city. Other new features included a scenario editor and in-game radio stations.
  • Mass Transit - 18 May 2017

    • The "Mass Transit" expansion, announced in February 2017, includes more diverse options for the game's mass transit systems, such as ferries, cable cars, blimps, monorails and improved commuter hubs, among other additional assets.
  • Concerts - 17 August 2017

    • A mini-expansion, "Concerts", added the ability for players to place event venues for concerts and festivals, and enact laws and regulations relating to these.
  • Green Cities - 19 October 2017

    • The "Green Cities" expansion, announced in August 2017, allows the player to implement principles related to sustainable development to cities, such as solar panel rooftops, electric cars, and other ecological improvements.

I haven't played strategy games on a console before -- much less on my PS4. Will you be able to use the controller's touch pad to move a cursor around the screen?

Man, I had a sweet save on the go with the latest DLC (no 3rd party mods). Then all of a sudden earthquake out in the sea somewhere and FLUSH... Tsnuamiiii washes away everything, pushing me into a ton of debt. D'oh.

Huh, so this OT is just for the console version? If so we will need a PC thread too...

How does the game run on Ps4? I have played it (a bit) on PC but my laptop isn't really game worthy so I only tried the game a couple of hours. I enjoyed it a lot but I'm scared on how well it can run on Ps4 with a controller.

The free weekend on Xbox was great, I watched my friends take their first steps of building their own cities. It's super interesting to see how they, completely new to the genre, think and how they learn from mistakes etc.

I had this on the PC when it first came out and loved it, but my PC broke.

I then picked up the console version on XB1 after the recent sale. I love it, but I do wish there were a few of the PC elements in the game, such as controlling traffic lights / stop signs, terraforming, etc.

But as a base vanilla version it is such a joy for now. Just hope the various DLCs come soon.

If you guys need information for the PC version, the forums has a lot of information and pictures, especially all the Dev Diaries.

I would help but I don't really play the game now lol.

I just tried Cities Skylines on Xbox One X, the game runs at 60 FPS oO

Looks like it was unlocked on Xbox One but used a double buffer, thus if it was under 60 it only ran at 30.

I'll do a video.

Wow, really cool to be the (first) spotlight thread here on ERA. :)

Time to update the OT within the next 24 hours with more informations, links and a few changes so that this here will also be the for the PC version.

Can't personally wait to get the add-ons on console.

Any good X comparison with the PS4 Pro version out there? Would love to know if it actually runs better.
The Pro version is not bad and runs very smooth, but at night when the lights get turned on, then it begins to drop FPS hard.

If the X version is significantly better, I would consider to buy it again.

I am excited to pick this up soon. I saw a video showing the X version running at 60 fps with dips compared to 30 fps with dips on the standard XB1 without an official patch. Hopefully we get word on an X version when the big fancy bundle comes out.

I own the PC version and most of the DLC, I bought it on PS4 Pro for some comfy couch gaming but I regret doing that as my Xbox One X is my current weapon of choice. How is performance on the One X? I might consider triple dipping depending on how it performs.

Runs amazing performance or also controls? Planning on getting it for Ps4 but I really wonder how it controls with a controller.
The controls are really good on consoles, some buttons have contextual actions depending on the tool selected.

As you can see in this video the performance is way better on Xbox One X than Xbox One (is the PS4 version limited to 30 FPS ?), but note that the game is not yet patched, it's just the Xbox One version running on X :

No PS4 was never limited, at least not on Pro and besides the night, up to 100k people (had no time to play further yet) it was always 60fps. I would love a comparison.

I absolutely love this game on PC. I might have to double dip the Xbox version.

I (and my wife) love the game on PC, we tried running it on the TV downstairs from the couch but it's never the same as being comfortable at a desk with KB/M.
With my XboneX on the way I'm seriously tempted to dip in on the console version. I hadn't bothered before as I didn't think either console would handle a larger city very well. I'd be interested in any feedback which shows otherwise :)

That X footage looks glorious, this console has been awesome for me. So many little hidden gems with how things run unpatched combined with some amazing patched results.

Don't suppose there's been an update today with the DLC release?

Played some Snowfall last night on XB1. Everything ran smooth no issues so far. I really enjoy the new ascetics. Really looking forward to jumping back in. I've been away waiting for the DLC so it'll be nice to finally play some more again.

Yesterday was busy. New DLC for this and the Sims 4 out as well

Both run great on the X though Skylines seems almost too sharp. the Xbox One version was 'softer'

Been playing this the last few days after putting heaps of hours on PC. I reckon they've done a great job with the console controls. Doesn't feel bad to use at all.

The major things I'd like to see added to the console versions are:

1. Changing the incremental height of roads, (eg: from default to steps of 3)
2. Terraforming
3. Ability to make assets so you can then just bring them into your game rather than having to build elements from scratch each time.

Aside from that, this is glorious to play and has taken up so much of my recent gaming time. With regards to point 3, this is probably my biggest issue, I don't even want 'sharing' just allow me to make an intersection and save it out, then it will cost whatever it costs to build to use it.

Would be interesting to know when bits were added to the PC version, as my PC died not long after this released, so my experience was barebones anyway.

Finally changed the OT today, now this will be for both platforms PC and Console!

If you have any suggestions or links that should be in the OT, just say it and I will add it.

Nice changes!

Only two thins I noticed :
- thread title still says "Console Version"
- the official site link does not work (need to remove /ps4 at the end)

EDIT : title changed while posting :p

I can't believe I found this because I am addicted to the game.

I bought GTA V and Cities Skylines together and even though I should be killing people in GTA, I feel more in tune to Cities: Skylines than GTA.

Especially with the amount of micromanagement available.

Right now I'm waiting for the RAM (messed up, bought DDR3 instead of DDR4, game w/ mods is a memory hog.) so I can build my dream city but until then, anybody got any tips? I'm trying to build the best city but I don't know how to go about it since my planning skills are shit and all; I'm just discovering there's different ways to place highway entrances and different ways to do intersections. It's literally more intense than SimCity 4.

Did you get far into a game, I'm reticent to double dip just yet until I'm reasonably sure the performance stays up there late game.
