Bernie Sanders' top campaign advisers organized a conference call with reporters on Monday to argue that his presidential run was off to an "exciting" start – despite what one might gather from the evening news.

"The headlines that Bernie's campaign is in free fall or is falling apart could not be further from the truth," Ben Tulchin, a campaign pollster, said on a press call with reporters.

Jeff Weaver, a senior campaign adviser who served as Sanders' 2016 campaign manager, railed against the "undiscriminating acceptance of polls that fit existing narratives". He said Sanders treatment by the press at this phase in the race was similar to a period in 2015 that he called the "Bernie Black out." This time around, he called it the "Bernie write off".

"There seems to be a direct correlation between the media coverage of polls and Bernie Sanders's specific standing in those polls: the better the number is in poll, the less coverage it receives and the worse he does the more he receives," Weaver said.

He complained that a recent Quinnipiac poll showing Sanders had slipped to 14% generated 47 news stories in major media outlets while another poll showing him at 22% was covered in only two news stories.

The call was organized as presidential hopefuls Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris gain ground on the Vermont senator.

His team argued that Sanders is well positioned to win the party's nomination, noting that he has more cash on hand – $27.5 million – than any other Democratic candidate and 1 million volunteers working to help elect him.

Perhaps most importantly, they argued, is that healthcare has emerged as a central issue in the primary – for candidates and voters.

"It's clearly very positive terrain for us," Weaver said, insisting that Sanders's signature Medicare for all plan continues to convert supporters daily. He added: "It also shows a clear differentiation among the candidates in terms of who is willing to take on the big insurance companies and the big pharmaceutical companies to benefit working Americans."

Sanders' has long criticized what he refers to as the "mainstream media" and gripes often about coverage of "political gossip" – reporting that covers the horse race as opposed to policy and the issues.

This weekend, Sanders campaign is organizing a softball game against members of the press at Iowa's Field of Dreams baseball field. The game is meant to show "goodwill and sportsmanship" at a time when the media is frequently "demonized by the president."

Here is an excellent thread by Brainchild which shows bias from evidence perspective.

The media should be fair in how it handles reporting of candidates, this does seem to be biased in the weight of evidence showing more negative than positive coverage.

This has been talked about and spread around a lot by his base, it's not surprising that the campaign started to adopt it.

Nothing like an enemy to get a base riled up.

Gotta laugh at folks in this thread already saying it's bad to complain about this even if it's really happening.

America and the world it impacts seem to totally deserve what happened to us in 2016 really.

Is this the thread where journalists like Sydney Ember get brought up in?

The article is specifically talking about retail politics, one-in-one talking with passers-by, shaking hands, all that. The personal stuff. You can willfully misread what "talking to no one" meant, if you want to lean into this media-sabotage idea, but the meaning of what they're saying is clear and not contradicted by a photo of Bernie giving a speech.

Looks like a psychology play. Anecdotally it appears that more and more people are becoming distrustful of the media as a whole. Obviously this is more common to those who we lean to the right, however I am noticing the sentiment has slowly but surely been gaining some traction and credibility on the left as well.

Big corporarte journalism, WaPo, NYT, CNN, etc (Fox, Drudge, etc isn't on this list because it was never journalism to begin with) have descended back into Yellow Journalism over the last two decades.

Yeah I'm not buying that either.

Well, it is true.

The corporate media HATES Bernie because they feel threatened by him. He might actually change the status quo.

If there's one thing I can count on Era for, it's denying that for years many news outlets have been obviously flippant towards Bernie's campaign to a point beyond ignorant negligence.

But the problem with this is even though it's true I don't think it's very politically expedient for his campaign to say it. The reality is bringing it up will serve those against you a way to be more reactive against you as opposed to more empathetic about the reality of the situation. I'm sure by page 3 there will be old man yelling at cloud pics.

Citations Needed did an episode on corporate media "fact checkers" who will apply absurdly stringent standards to certain Democrats ("Bernie said 80% of people are living paycheck to paycheck. We rate this false, pants on fire, three pinnochios. It's actually 78%") while the President of the United States is a serial liar who makes up literally everything that comes out of his mouth without a remote shred of truth. It creates FUD around any Democrat who might rock the boat or create chaos within the capitalist structure by implicitly comparing them to Trump.

This should've obvious after that last debate from CNN.

Jesus christ, they're not even trying to hide it anymore.

It's a click-bait headline

Read the actual article, or like, the first two paragraphs and you actually understand what the headline was "meaning"

Most candidates go to the fair to establish human connections with voters. Mr. Sanders's approach underscored how his campaign is focused primarily on championing ideas.

Literally the first paragraph under the article title.

DES MOINES — Bernie Sanders examined the butter cow. He power-walked by the Ferris wheel. He gobbled a corn dog.

He spoke to almost no one.

Most presidential candidates use the 10-day Iowa State Fair to showcase their retail campaigning skills, because it is one of the best opportunities to meet a wide cross-section of voters before the caucuses in February. Mr. Sanders's approach to the event on Sunday — stride briskly, wave occasionally, converse infrequently — underscored how he has grounded his campaign in championing ideas rather than establishing human connections.

The Media is trash. So sad to see them trying( again) to destroy him.

Thats why i cant take Colbert and the rest of the media seriously when they attack Trump. Without him they would lose so much ratings and money. I believe 100% that Colbert loves that trump is president and hopes that he gets reelected just to stay Nr1. in late night. The taxcuts for the rich doesnt hurt him either...

trash media.

Yeah, I don't actually understand the complaints about this article in particular.
Seems fairly positive and accurate about what happened in Iowa to me.

Can't complain about the establishment being against you in a field that is so large it required two debates with nearly a dozen people each.

Time to complain about the media being the enemy of the people!

"Bernie didn't have enough one on one conversations at a state fair where he spoke in front of the biggest crowd of the day, and that's troubling" is a very bitch eating crackers take.

There is no such thing as unbiased media coverage. Even among the best and most professional outlets

Not to mention that our landscape has changed in such a way that many norms have been shattered and hyperpartisan rhetoric has infected everything

Who knows if we even have high quality editors in charge of all the forms of media being pushed out

Its a damn game of survival in this new political wilderness and Im not sure if complaining about it helps your chances. In fact... We burned through so much media day to day that Im pretty sure most people will forget Bernie complained about this by tomorrow if they saw his complaints at all

Im honestly at a loss here. Unless we get a working system in place for professionalism and editorial back in our media (not likely) I dunno what the fuck we do about it

It's been this way from the jump. The Dems and their media did similar to AOCs campaign, they largely ignored her until she won. 2015 Bernie was pulling Ayatollah Khomeini crowds at his rallies, no news coverage with only "word of mouth" and viral pictures on Twitter and other social media.

The Bernie hate during and after '16 made me realize that the country really did deserve Trump. It's always been so very obvious to everyone outside the country.

I think you're wrong, we should trust the random twitter accounts like "Kamala Harris is a Cop" for our political insight.
It doesn't matter what the article says, there's going to be more people reading merely the headline and blurb than people reading the actual article. NYT knows this.

There are many people that agree with Bernie but didn't vote for him because they didn't think he could win. Corporate media has been pushing the "Bernie can't win" narrative by the disengenuous coverage.

More "us vs them" to get his crazy base to not vote for the Dem nominee. Nothing new with him.

Assuming the numbers quoted here are true that appears fairly damning, does it not?
