Jay Z put out TWO albums with him when it was common knowledge what r kelly has been doing. This is all very old news in the music industry. It's just that this documentary is shedding so much light on it now, YEARS after the fact

Jay Z only put out 2 albums with R. Kelly to avoid a lawsuit stemming from the summer tour they were on together. Basically they had a tiff while on tour and R. Kelly filed a suit for money and said he was being threatened by Jay Z's entourage both backstage and from the crowd. Jay Z offered him a chance to make an album together where they can avoid any lawsuit and make money off of it and it convinced R. Kelly to drop the suit and work together.

These apologies have really come a long way now, I still remember when the standard reply to media outrages was "sorry not sorry", then people started getting smarter and we started getting the "sorry but..." kind of apologies, and now we have really refined the art of the forced apology, we are now in the "sorry I did this subtle excuse here blah blah so sorry reinforce subtle excuse" what will these young kids come up with next.

I would've just been like:

"I fucked up. I worked with R.Kelly because despite being a shit person, he's extremely talented and has a huge fan base. I thought it would benefit my career during a dark time in my life. Considering what I stand for, it was extremely hypocritical of me to work with him (and Terry Richardson).

I didn't respond sooner because I was hoping it would all go away. Ultimately I was trying to protect myself, and it was cowardly.

I know it's too little too late, but I will be removing the song from all streaming platforms. If you no longer want to support me or my music, I understand.

Again, I fucked up, and I'm sorry."

I'm not really a fan of this "you must condemn this person" movement. Seems like bullying. I mean, if x doesn't explicitly condemn y, it doesn't mean x support y. Silence is not approval.

Did you really not read the OP?

(CNN)Lady Gaga once defended her 2013 collaboration with singer R. Kelly by pointing to the "bond" they shared over "very untrue things written about us."

Kendrick didn't need push back, it's a non issue. The first three artists Spotify went after we're predictably all Black abusers. If they were serious about pulling the music of abusers then they should have went scorched Earth on the 50s-80s rock scene for example, (them fucking junior high school age groupies was well known) pthat's why Kendrick threatened to boycott. You know they wouldn't have pulled Steven Tyler, Elvis, John Lennon, David Bowie etc... Etc... so they dropped their concern trolling about abusers.
It's not a non-issue that (Edit: Oops, abandoned this train of thought, then didn't delete this bit. Let's try again downstream in the thread.)
Disgusting is how you make the song seem like it was hurting anyone.

It's meaning was something Gaga was very vocal about in the media and for those that actually care it's worth looking up.

As for the allegations I find it all absolutely horrible.

Maybe it hit Gaga in the head more than some believe and honestly if a friend that I've trusted for years turned out to be everything that he's currently accused of..

I would take a few long days off from reality.
Lady Gaga's voice sang a song about how the accusations re: R. Kelly were "very untrue." Nobody cares if you don't think that was hurting anyone.

She doesn't have to do anything. But if you are going to position yourself as a champion for victims of abuse and then go on to do a song with a person who rapes young girls, prepare to be called out on it.

I like Gaga but it was well known what a monster he was before she collaborated with him. He literally made child pornography. Lady Gaga for sure knew about his very public past at the very least. I think for the kind of response she is getting her apology fell short. It seems like she is just skirting around the issue as much as possible. At least she removed the song/video.

Also are we exclusively using threadmarks instead of updating OPs now? That's nonsense.

As good a response as you can ask for short of going back in time and stopping it from happening. Dunno what some people expect.

This. If she was honest and upfront I'd accept the apology and think more highly of her.

Celebrities should hire you to write apologies

Threadmarks is such a trash system. I could flip through a thread quicker than using that archaic piece of shit.

I'm honestly shocked she's pulling Do What U Want. Even more shocked ppl are still pissed at her even after doing something so unprecedented.

If you're expecting apologies like that from any celeb that has worked with R Kelly you will be waiting a long ass time. They don't havebe to grovel to a fanbase that's not going anywhere. They just have to offer a apology they are comfortable giving. She didn't have to open up the way she did in that apology. Especially a forced one.

What did Kendrick do wrong? He's not defending R.Kelly, he threatened to pull his music over Spotify's racist behavior. I would have done the same.
This is the one time where I actually say in earnest -- BOTH SIDES! It was a bad look on Kendrick's part to go so hard in defense of XXXTentacion and R. Kelly - and yes, trying to prevent those two coming to harm commercially is defending them.

But on the other hand, he had a point that Spotify wasn't pulling content even-handedly if the sole criteria was supposed to be, "the artist in question abuses people." And that leaves me with both-sidesy-ness, because I think ultimately it would've been better if Spotify had gone through with it, because "it's a start," and yet... Yeah, why so short a list?

It was also harmful in the end, because all Kendrick succeeded in doing is getting Spotify not to do anything and continue generating revenue for predators. So, I find myself torn on the issue. This tweet sums up my feelings.

I'm not really sure where this 'I desperately needed R Kelly's fanbase' narrative is coming from but Gaga's popularity and fanbase was several times (and I'm talking double figures) bigger than what was left of him.
In fact their song together is R Kelly's biggest song SINCE then.

I agree about everything else.

You do realize jay-z made the album with him before the fall out right?

I don't think a pop star has to be desperate to want to up their record sales by collaborating with another major artist lol.

Maybe she was just a huge R. Kelly fan growing up and wanted to work with one of her idols. Idk. My post was just a hypothetical response as to how I would do it.

Apology didn't do anything for me personally but hey, I also didn't expect one either way so it's whatever.

They aren't looking for respect or to come clean. They are looking to minimize damage. That type of apology may placate people like you or me but honestly that's just bad PR.

The albums came first, then the tour. Jay-Z is lame. All of NYC knew about RKelly falsifying the marriage certificate and marrying Aaliyah because Hot 97 mentioned it at the time. Jay was in the industry so he definitely knew. Further Aaliyah and him dated briefly before she dated Dame Dash. That dummy knew and still worked with his ex's abuser. Dame is also on the radio now saying Jay tried to steal her from him after they started dating. Ffwd to recent years and that fuckboi gets his ass kicked by Solange Knowles for cheating with Dame Dash's ex-wife. Jay is a lame dude with issues, still Top 5-10 though.

I only read the first 50 or so comments after the statement, but sometimes it feels like any celebrity is damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Her statement was good in my opinion, but in the comments I read, there was already a number of posters saying it wasn't good enough.

Unless you're into the music scene he's in there are bigger fish to worry about. It's not that people don't care it's that he's under the radar so he doesn't get bought up. He's not Kanye. Normal people can only do so much, all we can do is have a conversation - this is where law enforcement needs to step in. R. Kelly isn't unique in the music business, and many things they do are unknown to the public or aren't widely known. This is why the documentary was necessary to put the spotlight on him again.
Yeah, it's just been frustrating to follow. Couldn't understand how this didn't happen after the BBC doco, but heres to hoping he's now held accountable
