I can buy Millenium being a HOX/POX rip. The whole thing sounds, well, nothing like Bendis and everything like Hickman. Hell, Bendis is practically working overtime just to convince people he's actually read LOSH lol

Why was DC so insanely good in the late 80s?

Personally I was never a big DC fan until sometime after I got back into comics circa 2008. The universe and characters came off as somewhat impenetrable to me as a kid. Just because of how much backstory there already was, it seemed too daunting to try to get into. I wouldn't have known where to start.

But the late 80s was the perfect time to start, since it was right out of Crisis on Infinite Earths, had reset continuity, and DC was firing on all cylinders with a renewed sense of creativity and stepping out of the normal bounds.

Dude I was a child in the late 80's. I cared more about Ninja Turtles and Transformers toys than comics.

I mean, I didn't get into comics until 2015. That doesn't matter. I can see now how amazing the late 80s was for them. Even reading them now, it has the best Green Arrow run, the best Suicide Squad run, and top tier The Question (I would say the best, but there aren't really any others to compare it to), JL, WW, Superman, etc.

I mean it does for Freeza.

Why was DC so insanely good in the late 80s?

-The Question by O'Neil/Cowan
-Suicide Squad by Ostrander
-Sandman by Gaiman
-Green Arrow by Grell
-Justice League International by Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire
-Batman Year One by Miller/Mazzucchelli
-Animal Man by Morrison
-Superman by Byrne/Stern
-Doom Patrol by Morrison/Case
-Wonder Woman by Perez

It's so crazy to me. Like, most of these runs were the best runs the character/team has ever had.

They were also exceptional in the mid to late 90's. DC had some pretty consistent quality from the 80s to 2004.

The real thing Larsen should probably be taking from the manga thing is a the 20-22 floppy isn't the only way forward.

There's a lot of questions to be answered to get there though. And ultimately I think what he said WRT superheroes is true. One Piece might have 200 volumes, but it'll end. Superman can't have that.

Started reading Paper Girls on a whim. 9/30 issues later, I'm convinced it's one of the best series I've ever read. It has no right being as good as it is considering it goes places. Even though I grew up in the 90s, I dig some of the 80s references and nods to defunct retail stores among other things. Stranger Things meets Alice In Wonderland sounds about right. The dialogue is snappy and pretty funny and the art is fantastic.

His crown jewel? Trouble.

Meanwhile, god Larsen just fuck off.

how the fuck does this dipshit manage to fuck up the generally correct take of "adopting the Shonen Jump model wholesale would be bad for comics creatively and a total fucking disaster when it comes to labour issues in the industry" by making it about the specific format of shonen jump instead of the economics of it all?

Even then he's not really wrong with his overall point. This person just takes it as Larsen talking trash about manga and gets defensive.

So with this IDW Transformers reboot, did they just wipe away all the chronology and restart from way back in the good ol' days?

tbh I'd love a shonen jump model in DC for instance, but I don't think it'd hit how it does in Japan for a lot of reasons.

we already complain about Bendis-style decompression can you just imagine if he was drawing things out the way most big Jump comics do?

Comics can do what tjey do cause qrtists are beaten into the god damn dirt.

You're gonna get about 80 pages of any random shounen within a month.

You might get 20 for an average comic.

The output levels are VASTLY different

Oh wow thats even worse than I imagined.

There were other stories about how bad that Jamas guy was with the X books around AoA also. Sounds like he was a real winner.

I don't think Jemas was in Marvel around AoA.

What Ive read is that turned down no less than four or five pitches from Grant Morrison.

I like how this tweet and all the people in the comments are ignoring the fact that he said "shonen jump" and not "manga" because there's a difference.

Comics shouldn't copy the Jump format, which has struggled in the west itself.

Manga is Shonen Jumps ffs

Are we surprised to see Gérard Way isn't even writing Doom Patrol anymore in November. It's Becky Cloonan and another writer?

No one picked up Conan Exodus the Ribic one shot?

Always read Tomasi/Gleason.

pretty good advice, yeah.

i think i'll pick up superman/super sons as both of those are basically done now (i see super sons has a new book, but i'll wait on that.

also tynions Tec. what is the main line up there?
Tim
Steph
Cass
Batwoman

I'll maybe revisit a few issues from each of those characters before Tec.

Leviathan is moving at such a glacial pace it feels like only the last two pages move the plot forward in any way

You know what's actually good? Tomasi's Detective Comics. It feels like Batman: TAS. Just by virtue of not forgetting that Batman occasionally has obligations as Bruce Wayne, including Alfred as more than someone to be threatened or rescued, and telling stories that don't involve endless misery, it's an enjoyable read every month.

I buy it. Everyhting ive read of his DC work, I either enjoyed like Aciton, or just liked for the most part like Young Justice. Havent read anything I actually disliked, but ive been avoiding stuff like his Superman.

Need to get caught back up on Young Justice. It looks like its about to go in a neat direction with Naomi joining and Tim's new look.

My two favorite books this week were both from Bendis - Leviathan and Batman Universe. Action has been consistently good to great and what little I've read of Young Justice has been fun. I can't speak for Superman or Naomi (but I've heard nothing but praise for the latter), but overall i think the move to DC has been great for Bendis. The strength of his other stuff even has me excited for LoSH.

^ Naomi was really really great. Obviously that's David Walker in part, but it was awesome. Moving over to DC has really dug Bendis out of his rut, everything he's been doing that I've read has been great. Batman Universe is particularly impressive, it feels like a total resuscitation for the franchise.

Batman Universe is the most fun I've had with a Batman comic since Batman Inc. It has that same Brave and the Bold, bright colors, anything goes vibe

Yep, that's exactly how I described it to someone who was on the fence about it. It's legitimately a fun Batman book with no misery porn in sight.
