The bade of anti-semitism is used by particular interest groups as a tool to dismiss legitimate criticism of Israel. It is pathetic and disrespectful to the actual suffering that Jewish people experienced during the first half of the 20th century.

I think the very idea that lobbyists can donate to governments and super paks can be used to discretely donate money to governments is just insane. It’s insane and ripe for corruption. How the fuck is this legal?

There is the smart way of discussing things and bringing to light the problematic things that AIPAC does, and then there’s the dumb as fuck way to do it. She chose the latter. How can she not realise the words she chose to use could get the reactions that they did? Even for many who absolutely can not stand what AIPAC does, her insinuating that Jewish money is the reason American politicians behave the way they do, is too damn reminiscent of the bigoted conspiracies of secret Jewish cabals controlling the world. It also ignores the geopolitical and religious reasons why Israel garners the level of support it does, making it seem as if money is the only factor.

She’s smart and she should know better than to make such a tweet like that.
AIPAC money !=Jewish money

AIPAC money = Benjamin Netanyahu money

Because the world is not simply 1's and 0's. There's a lot more to this than being right, including how to say that without coming off as being antisemitic. You can't just say things like that in our complicated world on complicated subjects on top of which she's a female Muslim congresswoman, who is already at a disadvantage in the system. Giving ammunition so the GOP can paint her as antisemitic won't help anyone, which is why politicians need to be skilled at not giving soundbites that will be used against them.
This. She is going to tweet and talk herself out of Congresss.

Don't criticize Dems because reasons.
Criticise without torching your congress career and leaving enough room for Dems to cover for her, more like. Do you like having Omar in office, because actions like this will make for a short career. Then what? Some of you are acting like you've never observed politics before.

I’ve read more scathing indictments of AIPAC from Haaretz.

This is just a bad faith attack to keep serious criticism of the Israeli government, Likud and Israeli lobbying in the US out of the Overton Window.

Calling critique of Isreal and AIPAC antisemitic enables actual antisemitism. You also need to conflate Israel with Jews in general to even make that work, which in itself could be called antisemitic.

I don’t understand this. But if bad mouth Israeli’s gouvernment then you are anti semite. But if you bad mouth a califate then it is fine? For me a califate like Saudi Arabia and the Israeli gouvernment is vile and reprehensible. That doesn’t mean that I think a group of people are the same as them. I think Trump is an idiot that does not mean I am anti American or anti christian, right?

Only until very recently, even mentioning the existence of Israeli and Jewish lobbies was called a racist conspiracy theory by much of American media including the New York Times.

Its time to stop special interests controlling our politics and influencing our media.

This. She is going to tweet and talk herself out of Congresss.
Only if we as Americans allow it. I think people underestimate the leeway that Congresspersons are given for making genuinely terrible statements, and overestimate how much of the general public supports Israel or anti-BDS legislation.

https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news...-u-s-liberals-millennials-and-women-1.6594182

This Economist/YouGov poll taken just before midterms showed that younger voters, liberals, African Americans, and women increasingly do not view Israel as an ally. Overall the numbers have dropped among all demographics, but specifically the ones who go out and vote for a female Muslim congresswoman.

The media and right wing attacks on Omar are going to land with the impact of a wet fart. The new democratic coalition doesn't really care about upsetting the old order. This new indifference is why the anti-BDS legislation exists in the first place. There is no populist way forward for Israel to maintain the status quo, only the lobbyist way.

What the Israelis government does to the Palestanians is no difference from what the Chinese government does to the Urghis muslims. People just pretend they are different. And Israel has done it much longer.

Ok fuck it. Let's call this what it actually is: a bullshit, racist, Islamophobic coordinated attack on the first Black Muslim congresswoman. One that discards reality in favor of tone policing and ignoring the truth of right-wing support for blatant and violent antisemitism.
It's just a continuation of what Congressman Zeldin tried first thing he found out she was assigned to the foreign affairs House committee:
Asked to clarify what he meant by his first tweet, Zeldin denied it had anything to do with Omar’s religion or gender. “Congressman Zeldin is referring to empowering/elevating pro-BDS, anti-Israel, pro-Maduro, etc., including asking for leniency for ISIS fighters,” spokeswoman Katie Vincentz wrote in an email, referring to the boycott, divestment and sanction movement and socialist Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Zeldin tagged Omar in the tweet with the anti-Semitic voicemail because he wanted to know “if his pro BDS, anti Israel colleague disagreed with it,” Vincentz continued.

Zeldin’s claims about Omar’s political stances are baseless. She has praised the boycott movement but also questioned whether it is an effective way to achieve an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement. She opposes legislation that would criminalize the constitutionally protected act of participating in a boycott. Supporting the BDS movement is not equivalent to being anti-Semitic or anti-Israel. She has urged against a “U.S. backed coup in Venezuela” but has not supported Maduro. And the claim that she has pushed for leniency for ISIS fighters — a narrative spread by far-right conspiracy theorist Jacob Wohl — is based on a letter she wrote to a judge in 2016 suggesting rehabilitation instead of long prison sentences for a group of radicalized young men who were convicted of trying to join ISIS but never made it to a combat zone.
This time however, there seems to be some bipartisanship, because if there's one thing everyone can agree on in US politics, is to support AIPAC's bullshit, and tell women of color to shut the fuck up.

Future generations will see Israel's treatment of the Palestinian people and everyone who supported them or were indifference towards it as bad as we see Nazism or the apartheid today. Just wait. Good for her for speaking up. If more politicians around the world spoke for Palestinians and denounced Israel's criminal actions, then perhaps things would be different.

Probably not, because they will all be dead or dispersed. It will be more akin to native americans where it has taken 150 years for any recognition and most people still don't give a shit.

AIPAC is not jewish money. IMO, it's not even pro-Israel money. It's anti-Palestine money.

Anti-Palestine or Benjamin Netanyahu money.

That's how you frame it. Save a whole lot of trouble and Jake Tapper Aggro doing just that.

In the meanwhile though, I hope Omar keeps fighting. She's like one of maybe two or three that are.

The GOP lead insistence that she's GOT TO HATE ISRAEL is a particularly funny form of racism to see; while obviously many Muslims and people of the Jewish faith have differing views on the middle east in the US I can't think of any hate crime that's happened to either side by the other on US soil and they generally live side by side (arguably driven by past racist housing pressure to keep the ethnics away from proper WASP's) and incidents of intermarriage aren't even that rare.

Meanwhile when they arrest someone for spraying a swastika/and or threatening to bomb a mosque inevitably its someone with a white christian background. But their insistence that this is playing out on some hatfield and mccoy's even in the US shows that they spend their days jerking off to to a de-stabilized middle east; making money selling arms to both sides while also getting to indulge in their end time Christian fantasies. Even the biggest most popular anti-semetic Muslim critic of Israel in the US, Farakkan, rarely makes mention of Palestine and the middle east and its solely about his 'hotep' pushing of the black conspiracy theory of them being the leaders of slavery and current economic disenfranchisement in black neighborhoods..it's got nothing to do with Islam.

Her critiques are par on course for a white progressive even when they are actual critical statements (which they aren't half the time) but for some reason she gets all the smoke. Hrm. This reminds me of when every statement Obama would give any opinion on race the GOP push back would be 'HE'S A MEMBER OF THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY AND HATES WHITES'

Does it matter though?
Does anyone care what history thinks of them? Natenyahu doesn’t, he’s getting what he wants, the Isreali right wing doesn’t either, the overwhelming majority politicians only care about getting support from lobbyists or are too cowardly to stir the pot and make a stand, so they dont either; the palestinians are getting killed, jailed and kicked out of their homes, so what history thinks is the least of their concerns.

So what does history do exactly? Right now all the lessons of atrocities done to native americans and aparthied South Africa seems to have been for not for the Palestinians.

All its going to do is that a 100 years from now, people will remember this, say “aw, that was bad” and move on.

That rt was foolish but I don't have a problem with anything else she said. I don't have anything against jewish people but we have to get AIPAC the fuck out of here. That anti Israeli boycott bill is fucking abhorrent.

"lobbyists buy legislative votes" is maybe the tamest and most lukewarm take i can think of but the brown lady said it so let's all pile on i guess

fortunately i think the dam is finally breaking and real voters don't give a shit so this will all just be more pundit hand wringing

As a Jewish person, I loathe how successful Israeli foreign lobbying efforts have been at equating "anti-Bibi" with "anti-Israel" with "anti-Semitic".
As a fellow Jew, I couldn’t agree more.

It’s weird though, because most Jewish people I know are super pro-Israel no matter how liberal they are otherwise, and find my lack of Israeli “loyalty” disturbing

How the fuck can anyone justify this? These people see killing children as "self-defense" and yet some people are interested in having them run our country? Get the fuck out. We already have enough children's blood on our hands as a country, do we really need Democratic leaders that are okay with more?

At least the entire news cycle surrounding this is shedding a bit of light on the situation.

I was a bit of a downer in my last post and I didn’t add anything constructive, so let me try to fix that.
Instead of letting “history” shame them long after this is all over and done with, lets be more active and hold their enablers accountable and support the people that stand up and say something.

Look at this, how about we hold these people accountable?
People here will hold homophobic, antisemetic and racist comments against celebrities all the time with a furious grudge and venom, yet with Isreal, we just say “this is bad” and move on to “Harris 2020!” two threads later.

I apologize to Untzillatx for a shit reply, watching these threads for so long it gets so frustrating.

An antisemite used to be someone who hated jews, now an antisemite is someone who the jews hate.

I find the iron grip in which any criticism of Isreal is reflected and reframed as antisemitism the ultimate form of bad faith. Political reform is greatly needed in America when it comes to Israel.

You see Native Americans don’t have a country being attacked by Muslims so it’s not the same at all.
What?! The issue is that she said something that people are getting up in arms about because they want it to be antisemitic. She is not...

Bring that same energy when out president and his cronies stop actually saying stupid and hateful things that are actually stupid and hateful.

They hate her because she's a woman.

They hate her because she's black.

They hate her because she's Muslim.

There is NO way on Earth she could have framed it without being pilloried by all sides for being an anti-Semite because that is how pervasive and pernicious the pro-Netanyahu/anti-Palestine lobby is. You know, the thing she's complaining about?

But congrats to all the people who are so woke that they're carrying water for a murderous Apartheid state.

I mean, she came out in support of Maduro, so clearly she's okay with brutal, murderous heads of state as long as they identify as leftists.

Israeli ambassador under President Obama called her out this morning.
This is fucking maddening. He says people can differ on policy, but at the same time everything else he says boils down to "come around to our view, or get irrelevant" which is exactly what the level of lobbying at play does.
Otherwise, there is no rational reason as to why both parties can agree with AIPAC's point of view on how to approach the Israeli-Palestinian issue. There is literally no reason for someone who considers themselves progressive to support someone like Netanyahu or his coalition in the Knesset.

She came out in support of Maduro or like Bernie Sanders came out in support of non intervention. Two different things
She blamed the US for the issues there, called the Venezuelan opposition to Maduro "the far-right", and gave passive support to Maduro by citing nations backing him. She also used typical Maduro propaganda talking points to dismiss criticism.
Oh shit I guess that means that she isn't allowed to ever criticise AIPAC.
She can do whatever she wants. It's not about allowing her to do or not do things. It's about calling her a shitty hypocrite when she's being a hypocrite.

AIPAC is a cancer. Glad people are slowly realizing how dangerous the situation is and how entrenched they are.

This is a bold move, I hope she comes out strong. AIPAC is truly the biggest beast
