Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer is criticizing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for praising Gov. Gen. Julie Payette in the wake of Payette's suggestion that "divine intervention" did not play a role in the creation of life on Earth.

"It is extremely disappointing that the prime minister will not support Indigenous peoples, Muslims, Jews, Sikhs, Christians and other faith groups who believe there is truth in their religion," Scheer said in a statement posted to Facebook.

"Respect for diversity includes respect for the diversity of religious beliefs, and Justin Trudeau has offended millions of Canadians with his comments‎."

Speaking at a science conference in Ottawa on Wednesday, Payette stressed the need for greater public awareness of scientific knowledge and noted, with some incredulity, that certain unscientific beliefs persist, including astrology and skepticism about climate change. She also made a reference to religious belief.

"We are still debating and still questioning whether life was a divine intervention or whether it was coming out of a natural process let alone, oh my goodness, a random process," Payette said.

"We are a government grounded in science. Canadians are people who understand the value of science and knowledge as a foundation for the future of our country," he said.

"And I am extraordinarily proud of the strength and the story of our Governor General, Julie Payette, who has never hidden away her passion for science and her deep faith that knowledge, research and the truth is a foundation for any free, stable, successful society. And I applaud the firmness with which she stands in support of science and the truth."

Scheer did not directly criticize Payette. Asked whether Scheer would like the Governor General to apologize, a spokesman deferred to Scheer's statement about the prime minister.

That's a pretty crazy interpretation of what PM Trudeau said. Many religious sects are quite comfortable with the idea that their texts and traditions are not necessarily literal or 100% correct.

Pure concern trolling from Scheer. I can guarantee you he does not give a shit about Muslims and Sikhs, he's just pouncing on this for political points.

Respect for the diversity of religious beliefs includes respect for the belief that there is no Divine to intervene.

Of course he's attacking Trudeau, rather than the person who said it. The right in Canada are frantically looking for a wedge to use against him, since they have no real platform other than being anti-Liberal.

Rebel Media... oh I know them. Gavin McInness from Vice is affiliated with that media entity. He was also on Anthony Cumia's outdated media entity. I doubt his sincerity about any of this Alt-Right stuff, which makes what he does even worse.

Cumia is such a hateful, pathetic, creepy scumbag, and admittedly part of maybe 2 of the best 5 laughs I've ever had listening to media. Oh well. You'd think he'd have learned by now by how he has lost millions of dollars by being an impulsive psycho over the decades.

This is gonna be a weird election. I am an NDP supporter and I think Singh is a strong candidate, but the Conservatives being such colossal buffoons seems to really boost the odds of a Trudeau majority.

...Not that that'd be the worst outcome. I'll take a Trudeau majority over a Conservative... anything.

HAHA Okay Scheer... Conservatives come get your mans...

Look conservatives never going to change.

Believe in science, not religion
they have changed but for the worse.

ever since the Reform Party/Canadian Alliance eating up the Progressive Conservatives: Canada's Conservative Party has gotten worse.

Joe Clark are Brian Mulroney would be considered to be socialist commies in the eyes of today's Conservative Party

Governor General is a largely ceremonial role. Also, they appointed an astronaut. One who's been to space. She's going to have opinions on anti- or pseudo-science stuff.
They argue the role is also suppose to be politically neutral. They have to try and get him somewhere, and they know their base will like this pathetic attempt at stirring the pot. If you want to be anti-science/facts, be a politician in the States, we're already failing to implement progressive reforms in key science areas with Trudeau

I would be extremely happy if the politics game in Canada was played between the Liberals and the NDP, with the conservatives being relegated to a distant third (or fourth) place.

Lol I was at the conference where she said that.

I laughed my ass off when I read Scheer's comments. Talk about grasping at straws.

Scheer... needs help, if thats his takeaway.

As someone who comes from a religious family, no one in my family was offended by the GG or Trudeau's remarks.

Concern trolling. I'm still hoping that CPC will become the 3rd party this coming election. It would be nice to have the NDP as the opposition instead of CPC

Yeah, sorry, there's not as much of an appetite for that here as there is in the US. I do expect an increase in the right-wing version of virtue signalling (if not outright dog-whistling), but the audience for it isn't broad enough for things to become a completely alt-right shitshow, though I'm sure that it would go that way if it honestly won them points.

Lmfao at Scheer thinking this concern trolling will win him an election.

Scheer thinks a lot of things and his lack of focus on anything but making the Liberals look bad and hoping Jagmeet Singh and the NDP will split the vote is what is going to lose the election for him.

As a Saskatchewanian, I'd be embarrassed by Scheer, but Brad Wall had already been embarrassing us for years.

He's not even the most embarrassing Saskatchewan Tory MP. I seriously hope my province gets its shit together, but the demographic changes give me hope that it will.

Okay, what? That's the first time I've heard of this... Why A&W?!
Took pot-shots about A&W not using beef from Canada only. CEO responded back that Canadian meat doesn't meet their "hormone and steroid free farming" advertising promise to enough of a degree to be all-Canadian. Wall shot back that it's a cheap virtue-signalling marketing trick. It's just super embarrassing.
