MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minneapolis police officer convicted of murder was sentenced Friday to 12½ years in prison for the shooting of an unarmed woman who had called 911, and he apologized in court for "taking the life of a perfect person."

Mohamed Noor was convicted in April of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the July 2017 death of Justine Ruszczyk Damond, a 40-year-old dual citizen of the U.S. and Australia. Noor shot Damond when she approached his squad car in the alley behind her home.

I had a feeling of all the cops who shot and killed an innocent person that THIS cop would be punished. Just a gut feeling I had.

Hmm I'm no expert but I think I know why this particular cop was actually found guilty.

Still good. Dude deserves jail.

I'm torn. Good to see a cop actually face justice for his crimes, but sad to realize that if the cop was white and the victim brown, then this would have almost certainly gone the other way. America is fucked in so many ways.

Wait so his fear of his life defense didn’t work this time? I wonder why

I think the conviction is good. However, the argument is that ALL police officers should be looked at the same as this Cop (black man). Makes me feel some sort of way when a white cop can do the same thing as this black cop did and it just gets swept under the carpet...

Yet all those unarmed black men killed can't get any justice near this aside from the guy in North Carolina who was gunned down while running away.

On one hand I'm glad justice was served, but on the other hand, in the grand scheme of things - this is some ol' bullshit.

Exactly. A lot of white police officers get off by killing unarmed people of my race, & pretend that it never happened. Where's their justice? Those unarmed men are victims, too!

Some cops along with some courts are nothing but racist hypocrites. I hope I don't get banned for calling it out, but it must be said.

I hope this sets a precedent for punishing all cops who commit similar crimes.

Yep. Live in the Twin Cities, so with this being in the news so much, this thought has been going through my head regularly.

“One of the good ones” status revoked.

Can’t be brown and just go around shooting white people.

Glad he’s doing time either way. Just wish it was more common of an outcome for cops shooting minorities

It's still a slap on the wrist considering what he did. I doubt he'll even serve half of that sentence.

If the cop was white, he would get zero jail time. Instead it’s a dark skinned man named Mohamed who killed a white woman, so...
