Socialists aren't liberals, liberalism is an ideology rooted in capitalism while socialism is anti-capitalist.

That's literally what happened here in Australia, our equivalent of the Republican party is called the Liberal Party.
I think for a discussion like this to work you really need to define what you mean by liberal.

Money is a social construct. We could collectively end that practice if we wanted to. The problem is getting to that point.
It won’t be done. I can’t see it. Money is such a motivating factor in society, and personally I’m not doing anything without some form of compensation. Doing it for “society” isn’t good enough. I need a direct benefit.
Pretty much this. The only people I know that have turned into a right-wing mind are people with poor trains of thought and who are way too easily affected by media. As a Spaniard, you wouldn't believe how many people I've known that have had that transition because of terrorism.
I think you are underestimating peoples inability to see their own bad choices.
