https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/...r-strike-player-caught-cheating-in-tournament

A Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team, OpTic India, was disqualified from a tournament and disbanded entirely today after one of the players was caught cheating with an auto-aim program. Something about the way Nikhil "forsaken" Kumawat was playing caught the attention of tournament administrators, and the Shanghai, China-based event came to a standstill while they sorted things out.

The uncomfortable moment came during OpTic India's second match of the tournament. An administrator paused the action and came over to check out Kumawat's computer. According to video from the stream, the administrator was reaching over Kumawat's shoulder and using the mouse. Kumawat tried to bat the administrator's hands away while his teammates watch.

Pictures from the event show parts of what happened next: Kumawat packing a backpack and leaving, the rest of the team looking grim around his computeralongside tournament officials, and a file explorer window showing a suspicious-looking program innocently named "word.exe."

As for what actually happened in the game, esports writer Rod Breslau captured a few highlights on Twitter. In them, Kumawat's crosshair can be seen snapping to enemies and locking onto them whenever he gets points near them. At one point, Kumawat fires a burst of shots at a wall that perfectly track an enemy hiding behind it—an enemy that he couldn't possibly see for himself.

"We want to apologize to all the other teams and organizations involved," Jesal Parekh, the director of international development for OpTic India, told the esports news site HLTV. "It is unfair for everyone involved. We also want to apologize to our country and to the fans who have supported us. This will be a big setback for the country, and it is really unfortunate that one selfish person is capable of causing this." Parekh also said that the other four players on the team didn't know about Kumawat's cheating.

Turns out you can cheat on LAN. Apparently he's been cheating for over a year! Feels bad for his teammates.

mod edit: adjusted the OP to feature a more reliable source

The whole roster was released.

This guy just ruined the reputation for his country..

Here is the clip that triggered the anti cheat.

Edit: Basically aimlocking. The outline you see in the clip is only visible to spectators. His crosshair movement is not something a normal player would do.

At 4 second mark, his cross hair sticks to the enemy even tho he is behind the wall. Keep in mind that the players in game cant see that orange enemy outlines. Its something only available to people who spectate the game.

Ah this clarifies it a lot. High level FPS always looks crazy with perfect aim anyway.

Just to add on to this, don't forget that you can control the playback rate on twitch clips - it's a lot more obvious if you watch the kill running at 0.25x

Reading up on it looks like he's been accused of cheating in the past too, glad he finally got caught and his days as a "pro" are rightly over.

We have put these people on pedastals, have expected them to perform superhuman feats time and time again. At some point, this is what they must do to survive. This is our doing. Blood is on our hands.

This is why companies have transitioned from cheats and instead offer microtransactions—you can still cheat, but at a cost. They are just trying to teach us real world lessons. Yet gamers still want to live in fantasy land where you should be able to cheat whenever you want just because.

Next time a big developer does something you don't like, take a deep breath and shut up. They are doing it for your own good. Be thankful.

Thank you. Ubisoft. Thank you, EA. Thank you, Warner Bros. Rockstar, please follow their example—the world is watching, and we still have a lot to learn.

Had to google this to check if it was copypasta. Got a chuckle from me either way.

This is so far off base and has nothing to do with cheating at a pro level competition. It's like saying we should encourage micro transactions in Madden because NFL players use performance enhancing drugs.

In response to what happened I'm surprised that we aren't using server side huristics to detect this stuff. To me that seems like the next step in anti cheat since the players inputs are know based on the world state. Things like aim time, accuracy and tracking should be something a AI could track and alert to cheaters.

In those tournaments, you bring out your own computer? or you can somehow download the cheat when logging to your steam account.

If it's the first, why referees don't check them before a play?

I think the computer is provided. But you bring your own gear (keyboard/mouse/headset).

No idea how he managed to pull this off, perhaps the security checks here aren't as secure as compared to a Valve hosted Major.

well ... I don't agree at all, but i guess that is your opnion. My take is, people will cheat to be good at something they are not, not at this "professional" level, the "pro gamer culture" it's not our doing, it's a business like any other, just like on soccer or boxing that people take steroids or other drugs to perform better. The cheating it's not our fault, it's the cheater's fault for not be able to hold his own shit togheter.

As someone who has close friends that are involved in the pro CS scene.. I am surprised someone got caught, cause a lot of big names do it aswell. But a different variant.

Also funny someone said Shroud would still beat him.. because Shroud has caused quite a discussion if he uses a same kind of hack/method to improve his aim in shooters

So is this some type of aimbot? Seems stupid to use one in a tournament, or just in general.

Is this common? You'd think with the sheer amount of eyes on the footage it would make this pointless.

This case is a much more obvious example, unfortunately it can be pretty hard to tell in other circumstances. The issue is that players at the pro level can often look like they're cheating because of just how crazy their reflexes and aim are in comparison.

This particular case is incredibly obvious thanks to the clip and the guy having it toggled while an enemy was behind the wall.

If the enemy was in sight the entire time it could be played off as skill potentially.
