Reddit translated an interview where he explained that while you can get a game over for dying, you can't get one for a Target or objective going toward a poor outcome:

According to a recent "Gamestar" Interview (https://www.gamestar.de/artikel/cyb...d-projekt-interview-das-bloedeste,3341870.amp), Cyberpunk 2077 won't have a "Game Over" Screen, unless the Character dies.

Quest-Designer Philipp Weber said in a Gamestar-Podcast, that they asked themselves: "What is the dumbest thing a player can do?"

So, it could happen that, instead of, for example, following a target, you decide to eat a Burger and in the Worst-Case-Scenario, in some Quests, the Target actually dies, which will have consequences in the Story.

I mean that's pretty much how RPGs work, a better question is if the game will have quest fail states which it probably does.

That's how to do it. No replaying long sections because you didn't complete enough chores prior to a mission.

Dying and reloading is so archaic. What's that From fans?

Do they just have a thousand script writers with a thousand typewriters doing all this work 24/7

How is this even feasible to have plot branches off every possible permutation of failure states

I love this. More Deus Ex and less GTA/RDR in my open worlds. Sorry I destroyed the mission critical wagon, that should not send me back to the checkpoint to watch another 20 minute real time cutscene of walking/talking. Let me improvise, let me fail, let me choose to reload if I want to.

I imagine if you continually just shit up the story missions yet get a bad ending sooner than later. Mankind Divided has story contingencies for you saving/murdering most NPCs in the game. You can close off entire side-mission quest lines by going in heavy handed too early.

So does that mean that if the intended target dies naturally without player's involvement, that quest will be considered "Complete"?

Will quests or entire story completely change if you kill an NPC, similar to Fallout?

My brain cannot comprehend this as there are so many loops that need to agree to each other.

My mind scrambles when I begin to try and comprehend just how much of a complex technical challenge it must be designing and programming this game with everything we've been told about it so far.

Most of the times if someone tries to do something like this the problem is it's so easy you never see those poor outcomes unless you do so deliberately. So we see how they implement this.

I really hope my character can take a bunch of drugs and blunder his way through the story, randomly not following objectives to hit the nearest burger place and/or drug deal.

Yeah its amazing how the team can manage this. Even the transition from witcher 2 to 3 is HUGE.

Burgerpunk 2077

"V! Go here! Do this thing!"

"Nah, I'll just shoot up drugs and porn down on my VR machine! Laters!"

shitty world completely collapses into global mad max hellhole, but you're wrapped in your cocoon of self-sustaining stimulation so you never notice, and as the debris piles up around you the apolcaypse somehow never notices you either.

YOU WIN!

You want to basically make the laziest, shittiest, Solo ever and beat the game with them?

Sounds amazing actually.

More RPGs should be like this and I more open world games in general. The nakeyjakey video about rdr2 did a good job elaborating on what makes the story missions in RDR2 so dull

So like a ARPG, or Shooter Looter? You die you respawn, never game over. I think Deus Ex Mankind Divided also show to respawn/load save.

Yeah, this is kind of weird to point out in an interview. This does appear to be a novel feature. Maybe it won't have a "Mission Failed" option or something like that?

I remember dicking around at the base during the beginning of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Turns out I should have gotten into the chopper right away because the hostages I was supposed to rescue died while I was looting peoples' desks.

lesson learned: if possible, don't activate missions until you're done sniffin for scraps in town's final trashbin

Good, how it should be in this kind of reactive rpg. Detroit came close to achieving this in almost all scenarios but iirc there are a few fail states in there that force a reload.

This is likely different from how missions are structured in 2077 but it reminds me of how certain "quests" in Stalker would expire if you didn't reach a certain area in time, and sometimes they'd be compromised due to forces outside your control ie enemy combatants killing the quest giver before you got there etc. It was some harsh dynamic stuff. I doubt CDPR will be doing real time stuff like that though.

You mean I can Clumsy Rain my way through the game? Holy shit!

Couldn't resist:
