I've definitely had my share of close-to-dangerous moments in arcades. No punches or knives but these moments almost definitely started. Guess I should consider myself very lucky.

Been in numerous fights and nearly got stabbed once. Didn't let that stop me, arcade days were too much fun.

So arcade douchebaggery showed that gamers were trash long before Gamergate.

Things routinely got heated in the arcades in the 80's and 90's. At least around me they were places I wouldn't really want my kids to be. At the same time, I had a ton of fun at the arcades and miss them.

It was mostly asians at my arcade, we all mostly played KOF series and MvC1. Never had any issues at all, to be fair, they barely ever spoke but nodded when they lost or won.

Shame to hear about this behaviour.

I got threatened a couple times as a kid. The most memorable time was when I was 11 and some guy, who looked like he was in his late teens or early 20s, threatened to take my chain/necklace and my cousin's chain/necklace after playing MK3. He finally left us alone when his girlfriend - with a baby in a stroller in tow - told him to knock it off. I lived close by so we ran to my house after that. I laugh about it now but we were shitting ourselves that day. lol

I saw this scene in Hi-Score Girl on Netflix!
Which reminds me, where is season 2?
I thought it was supposed to be out in October...

I've seen some rough shit, and been in a few fucked up situations in the arcades when i was young. Not surprised at all.

I still miss the arcades tho'.

Its funny because now that I think about i was also on risk of getting beaten up at the arcade, cause when i was young, my dad used to take me to the arcade and i was good at mvc2 so i would beat people up and they were super salty that a lil kid was beating them. And I remember my dad used to tell me they would leave super mad.

The arcade scene in early 90's in Philly was pretty bad. Was playing KOF 98 and this guy was literally breathing down my neck trying to intimidate me to give the guy I was up against an advantage. Probably one of his friends or something. Dude threatened to gank me after I won a round.

It was definitely interesting time period for the arcade scene.

Got shoved off a cabinet for a 3 win streak in Alpha 2 when I was younger. My older brother and my mom were there (laundromat) and they were heated

Ended up going home with the kid getting slapped by his folks and an apology from the family

Blame Netflix, they don't release weekly so you have to wait till all the episodes are release, which will be at the earliest in December. Fansubs are available if you just can't wait.

Germany
Listen to the 10 min talk and don´t just read the headline. Daigo drops some legit life lessons.

I moved to Germany in 1997. The arcade scene was dead then and I was way too poor for videogames before I immigrated from Russia so I never had to chance to be part of the scene. I played a few Sega machines in a casino (gambling is legal here and I only entered to play the games) and on a ship once.
So I took my punches in other ways. It´s not fun to get a blow to the face, oh no.

Reminds me in the 90s when we'd get the fuck out of the arcades when hells angels/rock machines rolled into the place.

Mortal Kombat indeed.

Going to arcades in the 90s was definitely something. I was a teenager way back then and got robbed and almost beaten with pool sticks among other things. And there was this bouncer who was obviously keen on underaged boys... I also met one of my very best friends there. First words I spoke to him were: « I heard you knew the code to unlock the bosses in SF2? » We're talking SNES world warrior here. 92 I guess?

Edit: Setting is a medium-sized french town.

When I hear about how violent arcades would get it makes me feel glad I was never into any scenes.
I can believe it, fighting games are the only genre that summons a mad rage in even the calmest people they never knew they had in them.
If MOBAs were on arcades in the 90's they probably would have had a murder rate it's sounding like.

The arcade I went to in the 80s-90s was a seedy-ass gang hangout that was so permeated by cigarette smoke if you stayed in for more than an hour you'd come out with a greasy film on you. Gang fights in the parking lot happened pretty much every weekend, there was a back room with the illegal Chinese gambling games, and I was there on two occasions when the cops actually raided the place.

On the cabs, however, it was a pretty safe place. Unless you were throwing people in SF2 and then all bets were off.

Getting beat up in the arcade for no reason was practically a rite of passage in 1994.

Lol this is so true. I got my ass whipped by 3 college-age dudes when I was 16 playing Killer Instinct at the bowling alley. Just kept beating them with TJ Combo over and over and being a smug prick about it.

Went outside to smoke a cig or something (maybe I was just leaving, I don't know why I would have smoked outdoors at a bowling alley in 1994 HA!) and they came out and jumped me, just stomped my ass into the sidewalk outside for a good minute. I was by myself and had to drive home feeling like TRAASSH.

I had a huge group of friends that hung out at that arcade a TON in high school and all the times I was there afterwards those guys never came back, because if I wasn't alone that night there would have been a bodybag in the parking lot if the usual crew was hanging out.

I've had people try to throw down because I beat them at Street Fighter. Thankfully never actually exploded into physical violence.

What do people do if you beat them at DDR, challenge you to a breakdancing tournament?

TIL that FGC's toxicity is widely accepted as a cultural norm...
Yeah it was pretty bad for a long time and still is depending on the game. Several years ago there was an incident at a tournament broadcast that blew up when a player who was commentating tried to argue that sexual harassment was normal and just party of the atmosphere.

I've been watching Smash Tourney rage compilations sporadically the past few weeks. Pretty sure I saw this one. Guest caster was making a rape joke, then tried to defend it and they ejected him and apologized on stream.

This one was on a Street Fighter X Tekken promotion. It was Aris Bakhtanians responding to the question "Can I get my Street Fighter without sexual harassment?"

(cw: a fucking asshole defending sexual harassment)
You can't. You can't because they're one and the same thing. This is a community that's, you know, 15 or 20 years old, and the sexual harassment is part of a culture, and if you remove that from the fighting game community, it's not the fighting game community—it's StarCraft. There's nothing wrong with StarCraft if you enjoy it, and there's nothing wrong with anything about eSports, but why would you want just one flavor of ice cream, you know? There's eSports for people who like eSports, and there's fighting games for people who like spicy food and like to have fun. There's no reason to turn them into the same thing, you know?

No lies. I mained Kilik in SC 2 and would frequently sweep people to a ring out even at a disadvantage. Needless to say I got good at dodging hands.

Not the most sensitive of thumbnails on that video, but I understand, Street Fighter and all.
