Daigo gives a lecture where he opens up about being physically abused at the arcade in his home town.

I've seen some rough shit, and been in a few fucked up situations in the arcades when i was young. Not surprised at all.

I still miss the arcades tho'.

I remember a grown man threw his soda in my face after I beat him in SFII HF, I was probably 11 or 12 years old.

Many years ago when I was in Tokyo playing SF4 on a candy cab, I had a drunk Japanese patron throw his hand full can of Chu-Hi at me over the cab because I beat his Dictator 10 times in a row with Boxer and he was pissed off. He then got up and tried to fight me before his friends held him back while the arcade attendant was profusely apologizing and got me some paper towels to clean up. Thankfully there was a police officer just outside of the arcade center who came in and escorted the man off the premises, but it make me avoid playing fighting games in arcades for several years after that.

While i'm disappointed I missed those days with arcades and such, in a way i'm glad I missed out on it if it avoided me potential physical abuse. Not that it mean it would've happened to me but you know. >_>;

In the heyday of SF2 fights would break out almost daily over it at the arcade I went to. Physical threats were also regularly used if someone came in who knew an MK fatality the rest of the arcade didn't know, and that someone wouldn't tell the regulars how to do it.

So you're saying video games DO lead to real world violence. Interesting. Very interesting. That's very interesting. 🤔

One time I beat this dude on SF and him and his gang buddies circled me making threats. He then proceeds to try and do a jumping kick and lands squarely on his ass lol

That's the thing, you don't have to be good for them to do that :(. Just throw a person in SFII and you could be looking at some fists coming your way.

I remember that. It was like an unspoken rule to not use throws. I still threw people. I've had people punch the machine and raise their hand at me, but I've never been physically harmed. It's crazy too. These were grown ass people and I was experiencing this around the 10 years of age all the way up to my late teens

Yeah the FGC is scary sometimes. Low Key whenever I hear a loud "FUCK!" and a "Controller Slam" I'm always 25% scared that I'm about to actually die due to some unstable kid with a gun.

Thankfully I haven't been physically harmed yet, I don't know if I could champion it like Daigo and continue competing if it happened.

I recall beating someone at Guilty Gear X in the arcades back in 2004, I offered to show him how to play with a few free credits at my expense, he responded by kneeing me in the back and pushing my head into the glass screen.

Some random girl kissed me in the arcade because I gave her a quarter so she could beat the Simpsons with her friends.

I have witnessed the same thing in LAN centers when I was growing up. Which basically are what took over arcades in most countries. The only Arcades left were the family friendly ones.

I guess now that Arcades have become more niche , I think its a little better. Only the big places remain open. I was recently playing in the Arcades in Japan and the overall atmosphere felt way more friendly. But who knows there could be "that" guy anywhere.

Sounds about right. Had an adult threaten to beat the shit out of me for creaming him in SF2 lmao. I had seen some real assholes in the few near me growing up. Glad it didn't hold him back

This shit is actually so scary , getting in a fist fight is one thing. But who the fuck knows when some salty dude is going to bring a gun. And there was even an incident recently at some gaming event.

Not surprising, even the anime Hi Score Girl, a show focused on kid living through the 90's arcade era in Japan, the mc repeatedly gets into fights. It was just part of the arcade life back then.

Man, my experience with arcades was so different. We just had a good time, ate some pizza, drank some soda. There were a few assholes, but usually you had one or two really good regulars who were older teenagers who would come in and just destroy anybody talking smack to the smaller kids and they'd show us how to do different special moves and stuff. The best people at the games kinda served as mentors/guardians which was awesome and they'd often spot you a quarter if you just stood around and watched them play for a while.

When I was... 12 or 13? (definitely still a minor) I used a 100% combo as Cyrax in MK3 (one of the earlier revs, def before the Ultimate upgrade) against a grown man and he pulled a knife and told me if I ever did that to anyone again and he saw it, he'd kill me. I never told my parents because I know they'd have banned me from returning to that arcade haha

Fights happened in the 90's and probably still do 20ish years later. A lot of Arcades shared a space with pool halls so fights were not a rarity.

Note that physical altercations are not always abuse, some are simply consensual acts of violence between both parties.

I've only ever had really pleasant experiences in arcades. Most people just wanna have fun and test their skill. It's great to hear how Daigo looks at that experience and dealt with it though.

Fortunately/unfortunately I only really played fighting games on home consoles when I was a kid. The closest store with arcade machines, was mainly a game room for pool and such. The arcade games was some Wal-mart lobby level stuff like Ninja Gaiden, or Double Dragon games. I did love the end PVP fight of Double Dragon though.

Kinda makes me wish I was on this scene back in the day, but we didn't have arcades like that back in the day in my area. Not saying that I want to get punched.

I can believe it, fighting games are the only genre that summons a mad rage in even the calmest people they never knew they had in them.

Arcades were definitely dangerous in the 90s - 00s sometimes. You had to know when to just throw the match and put the other person over. At least everyone throws tantrums at home now if your playing online against someone.

Growing up here in NYC playing arcades in Bodegas/ corner stores, you learned to loose on purpose to some of the random thugs playing these games. Dudes where quick to want to fight you cuz they couldn't handle their loss in a match of Street Fighter.

When I was about 10, I was playing a soccer game in an arcade when I felt someone pinch my ass. I turned around and it was a teenaged girl. She winked at me and walked off. I was too young at the time to link the act to anything sexual, but it was definitely weird.
