Wooof, Greed is rather tanky. I might get back to him later after getting a few more Souls to upgrade my atk power :P

Some screenshots I took using NVidia GeForce

I seem to have encountered a game-breaking bug. I teleported away with Vulgrim right after getting the flame hollow. After dying, I no longer have access to the flame abilities (jumping or burning webs), so I can not destroy the first web beyond the hollow lord

Any known solutions to this?

Edit: Forced respawn does not solve the issue. Running the beta patch btw.

I wish the save system wasn't so unclear and inconsistent. Sometimes I'll go back to Vulgrim and it'll save, other times it won't. And quitting the game isn't reliable either - sometimes you get put back at a checkpoint rather than the exact spot you left.

They've should have copied the Souls save system where picking up an item or opening the inventory saves.

I've had 2 crashes in 20 hours, which isn't too bad, but it's still more than the zero I've had in other Unreal Engine 4 games.

I had started DS2 again just before DS3 came out so I will be heading back to my time with Death and then I think DS1.

Hmmm. You probably know this, but if you liked Darksiders 3, which you clearly did, maybe go back to Darksiders 1 and then play Darksiders 2.

With regard to scope and gameplay elements, 1 and 3 are similar.

Darksiders 2 goes deeper with its RPG aspects, and it has a looting element as well.

Darksiders 1 and 3 are light on the upgrade and leveling fronts, while you have to be conscious about your build in Darksiders 2.

Wasn't too sure about this after the first reviews hit but in the end I got it on pc and I'm glad I did. I don't know what some of those reviewers were smoking, this is a fantastic game and honestly after the first patch there's not much wrong with it anymore. Sure this one is a lot closer to Dark Souls than Zelda but the result is still good, best Darksiders game so far. Also, so glad they did away with the map, makes exploration a lot more interesting.

Nevermind, I had missed the fact that you need to activate fire to use it. You do that with LB + b one the xbox one controller btw.

I actually want to get back to that area too to explore it more. Did you ever figure it out?

You can only get back to that area with the force (purple) hollow. It's dumb, I know; I was really annoyed by it and spent a lot of time trying to find my way back before I gave up and came back later with that upgrade and re-found that area. Luckily there isn't *much* there anyway, but it is necessary for 100%. It's a weird tiny side area that felt like should have led to a proper optional boss that... doesn't.

I see the loot and RPG elements cited a lot as a big divergence from 1 and 3, and to an extent, they are, but the big thing in 2 that separates it and brings it down is the sheer scale of the thing, IMO. There's just... to much game there. And so much of it is so similar - there's more "go and get 3 macguffin" fetchquests than you can swing a stick at. It's a shame, because the combat is excellent and the story and world design are pretty great (for the most part), but man does it drag on.

Yeah, I am with you that the combat is excellent. I also liked Death and the platofrming parts for their simplicity.

But the world design is so uninspired and bloated, and the main hub is just empty.

Coupled with the pacing issue (a good second half and a very boring first half up until you reach the Kingdom of the Dead), I almost dropped the game.

When it is all said and done, though, the game is enjoyable and I like it.

Oh, also those intertwined fetch quests are horrible, as you said you have to fetch three items for three different people at the same time. At some point, you just realize that only thing you should do is drop them in this vast world. It just feels so random content and so little effort was put into them (I am not sure though, maybe there were people who were impressed by how they placed and hid them).

Surprisingly, for someone who never been into RPG games and looting elements, I didn't mind them in Darksiders 2. They were actually fun somehow.

God this game sucks. I get to the sloth boss fight and theres 3 boss character models on screen. Two of which are inanimate but you can still damage. The third is floating in the middle of the air off his throne. Frame rates also chugging at like 10 frames per second making the whole damn thing unplayable. Of course I died. Game was barely running couldn't do anything.

Edit - And now the audio just broke and theres no sound. Wow.

Ugh, struggling a bit with Gluttony :/ Playing on balanced and this is the first boss that's giving me trouble.

Oh yeah. Me too. Took me around 20 tries. I think I had beaten all of the other bosses on the first try. His second form is really easy, but getting there isn't.

Agreed. Save upon Vulgrim or Workshop, too.

And an hour after I post this, I get to a "get 3 to proceed" quest and Fury starts kvetching about exactly that. Holy shit I love this character. The tone of it is exactly right, too, dripping with in-universe irritation at the "creator" taking shortcuts, and the Watcher skeptical that such a thing as the rule of 3 even exists.

And then...

"Oh really? You think that when the GIANT STATUE moves its arms to form a BRIDGE to the EXIT, THAT's our way out?"

"...I was just excited. You don't have to be mean about it."

"Oh, yes I do."

That sequence got a good laugh out of me, especially since that was the reason I dropped 2 in the first place.

I watched some of this game on youtube and have a friend who is playing it and it seems to be pretty awesome. Obviously there are criticisms you could level against it, but do you guys feel as though there's a serious disconnect between what reviewers are saying and what the game is offering?

Yes, very much so.

This is the one time I felt the reviews were majorly wrong on this game, and it was rather polarizing to see.

I'd say so. There are flaws to the game to be sure but, at its worst, to me at least, the game is a '7/10' at worst, though I could see a solid argument for a 6.

Other than the performance issue, particularly based on what I've heard the performance is like on Console, I don't see how the game is considered as awful enough to validate the 2/10s and such. I had a big issue with the I-frames on dodges in Apocalyptic mode, but I guarantee none of the reviewers actually played that mode, so that's not even a factor. The other big complaint was that the game has a very old-school style of gameplay and this is constantly used as a deterrent but, to me, that was a plus. It was the major appeal for GoW earlier in the year as, aside from the cutscenes, the game felt like a game that I could just play.

I forget where I heard it or if it was inspired by Jim Sterling's comparisons to Dark Souls and how it did some things better, like boss fights (which I completely disagree with, the bosses in this game had the same rhythm of dodge/counter that Dark Souls does), but I feel like a lot of the backlash towards this game is some people lashing out towards the fact that they don't like Dark Souls and Darksiders 3 is just a safe whipping girl to vent this frustration.

Finished the game, aside some performance issue even on PC, the game was a damn blast. It is easily a solid 8 for me.

Totally worth the deluxe edition pre-order, bring on 4.

Back in the day I crushed DS1 on the 360 and then again on PC. I played DS2 on PC only once. It is always fun going back to these games and just enjoying them. I think all three games are great and stand on their own as individual entities that combine to a greater form.

Yea, not to mention that many of the puzzles and environments feel really recycled despite some change in scenery in DS2. You will get so sick of maneuvering giant balls onto pressure plates with barely much deviation or variance throughout.

The puzzling element was something I appreciated in 2. They aren't by any mean hard (I remember I got stuck at one of them, though), but they always try and add a twist to each one even though they do feel recycled, but I think they did a good job at variety and twisting some formulas you get familiar with.

Oh, perfect. I didn't mean to convey that I think Darksiders 2 is sub-par. I just got the impression this is you are just experiencing Darksiders 2 for the first time.

Not that it means anything, but yeah. Absolutely. What I've played, which is most of the game, has been fantastic. I'd give it an easy 8.5 or 9 out of 10. It's obviously a really specific kind of game, but it clicked hard with me. It's just challenging enough on Balanced that it makes me look forward to ratcheting up to Challenging or playing on New Game Pllus (might be game breaking to have everything at once, but sure would be fun).

And I've only had one crash/freeze in 14 hours of play.

Not trying to be overly sentimental, but it really does feel like a game from a bygone era. After all of the bloated open world games that I've played recently, and mostly haven't finished, this feels like a breath of fresh air. I wish we had more games like it.

Sure am glad that I didn't cancel my preorder after reading the reviews, because I almost did.

Yes, very serious. This is some next level disconnect. Just beaten Greed and the game keeps getting better and better.

I don't even understand half the complaints feels like I'm playing a different game.

I finally got him, but that fight wasn't much fun. First boss I didn't like due to how fast he can dish out damage while it takes so long to drain him - he's hard to read which bothered me, but that could just be me :) Gluttony spoiler:
good thing you only have to get his health to around 50% before the easy phase 2 kicks in - that was a relief.

Just beat Gluttony too after like 8/9 tries, definitely the hardest boss so far, but from what I've seen here I might be underleveled (level 18 at the moment).
My biggest problem was how the move where he sucks you in has no good tell, and since I don't have enough health, even at full health it's a 1HKO to me.

It grounds you and makes that move useless.

So I've finally received the game this weekend (thanks Black Friday shipping) and I'm ready to share some of my thoughts:

Performance:
Performance leaves a bit to be desired on an OG PS4, that much is true. But to be honest, a lot of games leave a bit to be desired on a 5 year old platform.
It can be a bit choppy in busier areas and the "pause while I'm loading textures and stuff" feature is annoying. That said, it fares better than the Last Guardian and doesn't do any worse than most From Software games imho.

Gameplay:
Oh my, the gameplay is just hands down amazing. The combat is easy to get into but there is so much to play around with.
I can't for the life of me fathom why reviewers would state the the combat is dumbed down. Not having skill trees doesn't mean combat isn't as deep.
Every hollow form brings new movesets and combo's to play around with.
The combat feels quick and responsive and each hollow form is an entire different beast altogether.
The puzzles/ dungeon aspect of the game feels a lot more organic. It's part of the environment instead of being dropped obviously as a makeshift gate to your level progression.
The difficulty at "challenging" is just that, it's challenging but definitely doable. I haven't been trumped in the way I've been with Soulsborne.
And if that wouldn't be your thing, there is still story mode.
And if that is still too much, this just isn't your type of game.

Design:
It looks and feels every bit a Darksiders game. The graphics are in line with DS 1 and 2 but got a nice "nextgen" update.
Nothing too fancy, but the art direction did a great job to make it feel "triple A".
The level design is amazing and a welcome step away from DS 1 and 2. The large interconnected world works really well imho.
Not needing to wade through endless spaces of filler area on a horse is really appealing to me.
Discovering the world without a map but with a compass (bit of a needless accessory imho) works well since you have be perceptive of the world and remember where you're going, since backtracking is a big part of exploration.

I'm going to have to side with the group of "what were reviewers smoking".
I get criticism towards the performance of this game. All other criticism is just misplaced.
There is a deep combat system which could be compared to Soulsborne games, but truly stands well on its own.
When From started with Demon's Souls it wasn't a huge hit straight away. Darksiders started with it's own combat system around the same time, and I see this as the logical evolution of Darksiders 1 instead of it being an iteration of Soulsborne games.
The level design/ story and gameplay are just damn.good.fun. Sure it might not be a 9/10 or 10/10 game, but the low scores it has gotten are completely uncalled for.
8/10 in my book... and that's purely because of performance. If Gunfire can patch that, it'll easily creep up to a 9/10 to me.

That it does, but if you get greedy about hitting him once he finally graces you with being attackable, it's easy to get sucked in before you can react. Or if you smack him while he's sucking and take a step too far you'll get sucked in. Got a couple attempts ruined like that.

Beated lust, the game continue to improve and for now is a solid 7,5-8/10

Every review below 7 for this game is a travesty, some flaws are pure bullshit.
Long walk if the boss kill you?? Maybe if you don't unlock the shortcut like dark souls...
No clear path? I have the worst memory and sense of orientation ever and i have no problem with this game.
Old mechanic? Wtf does that even mean??

It's the child of dark souls and metroid with the darksiders combat and lore.

BUY THIS GAME.

You're referring to the sequence at about the 1 hour 47 minutes point in the video below?

unfortunately reviewers are spoiled now adays and are far too elitistic to like a game that's not super high budget or an indie with excellent artwork

the 4 and 2 this game got is a straight insult to devs imo

I don't get a few things. Unlike Dark Souls, reaching a "bonfire" doesn't re-up your estus. Which is a weird decision.

And I think if you die, your souls turn into a glowing blue orb thing. But if you die again, they're still there? Pretty sure they don't go away...

It's a weird mechanic and it's not a one-time corpse run. When you die your souls become a font for other souls and keep accruing over successive runs so it'll pile up (as long as they're close enough together). So you might die with 200 souls a run at a boss but at the end, after 6 attempts, the soul pile will have 1000 souls in it. However it also has the weird property of sucking in all slain enemies in the area, too? This part seems like a weird side effect and I don't know if it was actually intentional. It also means that any "extra" estus drops you might get also get sucked into the soul pile and you have to reclaim it to get those extra estus drops which is... weird. It *feels* unintentional.

It kinda is. You do get refills as drops from enemies occasionally.
And yes, the souls do not disappear if you die twice. If you die in the same area again, they even combine into a single pickup.

You're right, 60fps is perfect for the combat. The problem is the framerate dips so much and so frequently, it's practically impossible to get a consistent experience. I ended up finishing the game with it locked to 30, and the resolution upped to 4K instead.

I was on another forum and they were complaining about the graphics comparing it to a PS2 game. I put the graphics settings on the lowest they could go and it still looks infinitely better than anything the PS2 could deliver. Agree with the performance issues, and seriously what is up with these reviews? This is a nice evolution of the series and more great times. Can't wait for 4 now.

You're right, 60fps is perfect for the combat. The problem is the framerate dips so much and so frequently, it's practically impossible to get a consistent experience. I ended up finishing the game with it locked to 30, and the resolution upped to 4K instead.

Of course it depends on the hardware and the settings, but in exclusive fullscreen it's smooth 95% of the time for me. I wouldn't dream of locking it to 30.

GAME KILLING GLITCH

I've run into a game killing glitch on the Xbox.

Under tornado, first block puzzle. Block hovers in air and will not fall to conveyor belt. I can hit it with the throwing weapon, and it shifts back and forth, but will not drop. I've reset game, reinstalled game, traveled back and forth between Vulgrim points.

I see that at least 15 other people have reported this glitch on reddit.

Really disappointed, I'm 15 hours in. Hopefullly this is being worked on....

10 to 12 Hours game my ass. I just beat it yesterday on Apocalyptic at 31 Hours and while I did find all 20 Humans, I know I didn't find everything because there were items I could see on ledges/behind gates in the world that I never found a way to get to. I can see this game being a 10 to 12 Hour game if you already know where all of the Sins are and how to get to them, and that Avarice, Lust, and Gluttony give you the Storm, Force, and Stasis Hollows respectively.

I really loved the exploration based design of the games world and reading about how some people fought Sloth first, some fought Avarice first, and some fought Lust first after getting the Fire Hollow.
