David Bowie -- a pedophile and potentially a fascist?

I've been a longtime fan of David Bowie and as far as I could tell, he was a relatively decent human being. He seemed to advocate rights for those who couldn't speak for them selves like the gay/trans community, and I wasn't aware of him actively speaking up for anything harmful.

Unfortunately, a random thread just made me aware of stuff that I had never heard about, despite being aware of his death and the community reaction. I knew he was hugely admired and influential, and some people criticized him, but I didn't know he was apparently a pedophile. :( This is a really sad thing to discover. There are also posts saying he could have supported fascism but changed his mind later after getting off drugs.

It was pointed out that the thread was being derailed and it was not the thread for it:
Stop this derail about Bowie, y'all. This is not the thread for it.
Since I strongly think people should know in case anyone else isn't on Twitter and was in the dark on this, here is the information from the thread:

There's an anti-drug movie with Bowie, to which there was the reply:
David Bowie was a pedo so it's not surprising he did a movie like this. I think there are better ways to educate people about drug use.
When questioned about this, they gave more information:
More stuff:
Aye. Dude was an idiot for a bit. Adored Hitler, crafted the pro fascist (possibly uberman inspired) Thin White Dude until he came to his senses. He had a big enough god complex to think nothing of naming his son Zowie Bowie.

I'm not sure if he died holding that belief though, maybe someone should ask his son how he was in more recent times. Don't think he's a racist, just fucking dumb to not link racism, and overall nasty stuff to the Third Reich.

Stay off cocaine kids.
Because most people who like David Bowie know he went fascist and banged underage girls during the 70s. It's not really a secret. There's a reason people call him the Thin White Duke. He also seemed to have stopped doing both activities after sobering up, then passed away 30 years later. I don't think debate on rather or not he did enough to right the wrongs he committed should be shut down, but it's not new ground by any means.

Mods, if you're reading this, PLEASE don't sweep the thread under the rug unless there is strong evidence to the contrary. I really don't want Era to fall under the shadow of even appearing to cover up pedophilia, especially given the events that led to the creation of Era. That said I know that a lot of people may be emotionally impacted so I ask people to please post respectfully so there's not a temptation to lock the thread.

Since Morrigan has requested this be moved to a different thread,
No. I said to stop the derail, nothing else. I never encouraged you to make this thread.

(I don't know yet if this thread will stay open, but I'm at least setting the record straight. Please do not misrepresent moderation instructions in this way again.)

Why wouldn't you want people to know about this? :/ Here's your actual quote:

Stop this derail about Bowie, y'all. This is not the thread for it.
I took that to mean a different thread would be appropriate, and I apologize if I misinterpreted. I will edit the OP to include the quote.

Probably going to need receipts on the pedophilia stuff.

Most people just view his fascist phase as him being a provocateur and/or edgelord.

Except for the nazi stuff, I heard about this stuff.

I don't have much to add, but why do you think the mods would sweep this under the rug? Why would the mods protect Bowie for?

It feels a little unneeded and overly dramatic.

The fascist stuff is "just" an early attempt at being a total edgelord, the pedo stuff well...

Wikipedia gives more context

In 1976, speaking as The Thin White Duke, Bowie's persona at the time, and "at least partially tongue-in-cheek", he made statements that expressed support for fascism and perceived admiration for Adolf Hitler in interviews with Playboy, NME, and a Swedish publication. Bowie was quoted as saying: "Britain is ready for a fascist leader... I think Britain could benefit from a fascist leader. After all, fascism is really nationalism... I believe very strongly in fascism, people have always responded with greater efficiency under a regimental leadership." He was also quoted as saying: "Adolf Hitler was one of the first rock stars" and "You've got to have an extreme rightfront come up and sweep everything off its feet and tidy everything up."[314][315] Bowie later retracted these comments in an interview with Melody Maker in October 1977, blaming them on mental instability caused by his drug problems at the time, saying: "I was out of my mind, totally, completely crazed."[316]

In the 1980s and 1990s, Bowie's public statements shifted sharply towards anti-racismand anti-fascism. In an interview with MTV in 1983, Bowie criticised the channel for not providing enough coverage of black musicians,[317][318] and the music videos for "China Girl" and "Let's Dance" were described by Bowie as a "very simple, very direct" statement against racism.[319] The album Tin Machine took a more direct stance against fascism and Neo-Nazism, and was criticised for being too preachy.[119]

MOD EDIT: Thread has been rebooted here

And with that, on Thanksgiving night I am too full to digest any more. What is left over will not be swept under the rug, but portioned into plastic containers to be used as leftovers.

Please PM mod captains or admins with further questions on moderation, thank you.
