This game has been really immersive and quite wonderful to get lost in.

I'm going through a really tough time right now and I've been something of a shut-in as of late, but this game has been helping me cope. It's just so easy to enjoy this world and these characters.

Deacon's story has been great in conveying that no matter who you are, what you've been through, or what you've done, you can still make a difference if you choose to. There will always be people who care about you and need you.

Reviews really had me going into this trying to hate Deacon as a character, but man a lot of them got it wrong especially as the plot moves along. Finally got to the credits, still a ton of hordes to wipe even though I'm OP now lol. Game is not perfect, but it's damn fun and the characters are varied and great in their own way. Hopefully they get a shot at a sequel, and can flesh out the side missions/jobs more. There's a lot of variety they can get away with in this Sandbox.

This to me is one of the best design open world maps, everything just feels scale just right and you can go in every building which is rare and getting around on the bike is a blast.

For people who completed the game. Should they stay in the same city/area, expand or move to a different part of the country?

Same area, but...

- Add a western/eastern region as part of open world.
- Include elements of camp-building from games like State of Decay since now Deacon is kinda the leader of Lost Lake Camp - and has some sort of a higher level agenda to build out the resources needed to let Sarah be able to make a cure.
- Even though it's the same locations - do a complete retooling of all the major 'horde-areas' in the game so that it's more Sawmill like across the board. ( aka have the same level of high-difficulty horde in every area )

They wrote him really well some of the scenes were sad enough to get to me especially the few he had to make certain choices that you could see the character struggled with.

I'm absolutely not doing that. If you think playing a game for 25 hours and it not being good means I should continue on, then you're mad. There's no way the quality of that writing suddenly gets better. It's so fucking cringeworthy. It's not about me not seeing the themes of the writers or not giving enough time to see Deacon's arc, its just plain bad.
I have to disagree, I think it's well written. Not sure what the vocal minority with complaints about the writing are basing it on.

Even as someone who likes the writing - it suffers from a few big things, for me:

- Takes too long to get-going. The first act of the game is too light on meaningful story and character beats compared to the later acts.
- Arguably, and perhaps deliberately - starts off on the wrong foot a lot of the times. There are a lot of times in Days Gone where I went 'that's kinda shitty' to 'wait oh that makes sense'... 15 hours later.
- The writing - fundamentally - is not anything subversive/out-of-ordinary. It's imo - a strong tale of characters who are struggling in the end-times, but it's not any sort of new take on the zombie genre. And just because something is well-written, if it's familiar, it might not be for you. (p.s. I would say the same is true for TLOU )
- There are a lot of 'storylines' but not all storylines are paced in a way where the investment or effort feels like it's worth the time put into it. It might be a reductive way to look at it, but story missions are often about a loop where you're rewarded with a satisfactory character moment after a gameplay loop, but not all gameplay loops are rewarded equally. (Red Dead 2 also suffers from this for me )
- The pacing isn't the best, even once stuff gets going. There are times where you'd go "this string of 5 missions could probably be cut down to only 2 or 3" across different parts of the game.

Even having finished Days Gone and enjoying the story a ton - it's one of those stories and characters that I recognise - if you are someone who genuinely have major zombie-fatigue via stuff like TWD, etc - Days Gone isn't going to win you over.

It's still a self-serious zombie story at the heart of it. And that by default will not be to everyone's taste.

What Days Gone does for me - what it's great at - was personally, show that the game, flawed as it is, and especially the writing has a lot of heart. That John Garvin and Bend genuinely, and deeply cares for the characters, world and lore that he's writing. And through this game, I can kinda see why they are so adamant about this not being a zombie-game. Because he's as big as a zombie fan as the best of them, and he put a lot into realising the world in ways that is unexpected.

Looking at his old interviews, I always felt that John Garvin didn't come across as being someone who's sensitive. I was always worried that he was - unlike Cory or Neil, a writer that doesn't get criticisms of broader issues. Especially when seeing him being so defensive when people call out that it's zombies instead of freakers. Days Gone proved me wrong on that.

I'm in the endgame now, and shit is getting real. I'll be sad to see this one end. Just some hordes to finish off and a few trophies. GOTY for me.

I reached a point in Lost Lake's arc (or whatever you call it)

the part where skizzo trades Deek and Boozer for some cable with the rippers. The whole thing felt like a TWD mid-season finale. Deek captured by the big baddies, who tell you they're going for Boozer at Lost Lake, and when everything seems lost, Lisa appears... As a fucking ripper.

I seriously don't know why Iron Mike would want to keep the pact with the rippers
especially after they fucking burned the camp and killed/tortured his own people. I can see where he's coming from, wanting to keep things civilized and shit, but these fuckers are way too dangerous. Oh, and then he left skizzo go because he wouldn't get a fair trial. I'm sure that choice is gonna come back and bite him in the ass.

Just got the platinum about 30 minutes ago. I still have about a dozen hordes left to do, but I'll save them for when I want something familiar to play after work. I really enjoyed the game. If it wasn't for the performance issues, this would be close to an 8.5 for me. Right now, it's a solid 8 and I'm glad my pre-order processed before the reviews hit. The first 8-10 hours are rough. I thought I was in for a long 30-40 hours as I tried to mainline it, but once you hit the third camp the game starts to find it's footing.

As an aside, I kinda wish there was a vendor for materials or crafted items. I'm at the point I want to just knock out hordes, but I don't wanna go farm for crafting materials.

I'd hope they'd stay in the same region. They're based out of Bend and we don't get enough PNW games. We get tons of games about places like California, New York, Japan, etc. They did such an amazing job on the environment likely in large part due to their local familiarity with it. There's tons of wonderful environments to work with up here too.

Plus it sounds like California would just be *completely* gone lol.

Yeah, keep the game in Oregon.

Honestly though, I want Days Gone 2 to be a prequel.
Highly doubt there's much runway left if you start from the end of Days Gone. Am also good on Deacon.
I want to play as Rikki or Iron Mike!

Act 1: life before the outbreak
Act 2: Outbreak, adapting to the new status quo
Act 3: Lost Lake camp is established, Iron Mike, Deacon, Boozer, Addy and others enter the mix
Act 4: A huge battle between camps, Lost Lake wins, End

I really don't think the things they tease in the secret ending would make for an exiting gameplay experience.

Same here. It makes little sense that mechanics don't sell crafting items (unless you need plants).
In the story they talk alot about people going on supply runs. For some reason, they are able to find grenades and assault rifles, but don't pick up anything else lol
I also noticed that when it comes to crafting Molotovs, Pipe bombs etc. it's ALWAYS kerosene and gunpowder I am short on.
Thank god I maxed out focus and ranged combat, so I rarely have to use explosives to take down hordes.

With a near-fully upgraded bike .. I have a really big gripe that *can* be easily fixed.

The bigger your fuel tank is .. the more time it takes to fill it up. It makes 'realistic' sense, but come on .. it sucks standing there filling fuel for a minute+ if you're on an empty tank. Just increase the fuel filling speed Bend, it would go a good way in streamlining the game.

Definitely! There are plenty of locations left to explore. They could pop over into the Willamette Valley and show the devastation on the I-5 corridor. They could go up the Columbia Gorge, which is crazy beautiful, and get us a glimpse at a fallen Portland. They can also expand east to Idaho and show the Snake river canyon. Lots of cool direction to go.

That glimpse at fallen Portland could be an amazing moment in Days Gone 2.
Remember when The Walking Dead showed us fallen Atlanta for the first time? Fuck yeah, do it Bend!

I'm actually really curious how they'd have the story play out up in Washington. You could pretty effectively completely lock most of Washington out from the rest of the continent by blowing all the bridges on the Columbia River. I kinda wanna know what went down up there.

I like how long it takes especially if its at night. Its meant to be a risk /reward situation.

It can get really tense especially if there's a large amount of enemies such as a horde moving about nearby.

The texture streaming issue seems to be getting more common the further I go. Nothing seems to get rid of it except a reload, which in some missions puts me back a stage, on top of being a minute+

Everything can load correctly then 10 seconds later blink to muddy low res and just stay that way.

I don't know if you or anyone else has been or are familiar, but the Oregon coast has some amazing places that would be perfect if they expanded to other parts of the state in the sequel.

I'm German but have been to the US countless times, even lived there for three years (mostly down South).
Sadly the closest I came to Oregon was Californa. Would love to visit one day!

I'm a little worried if they don't keep the sequel in eastern Oregon, don't want to spoil anything but one of the late game camps is in a really iconic location for people that grew up in southern Oregon and it's completely wrong. There is a massive lodge on the lake in real life and it's not even there in the game. And a lore item about fishing on the lake is also not correct, it says "no private boats on lake" I have been driving my dads boat on that lake for over twenty years lol. I feel they kind of just phoned it in on every thing outside of the high desert area.

Oh god, decon would die so many times on the roads around the coast, it seems like most of them have two hundred foot cliffs next to them lol. Don't know how they are up north but the roads of the southern coast always scare the shit out of me lol.

Oh damn! I have seen people say that, but I got the game 2 days ago and loving the start too. The fact that its going to get better, has me excited now.

I just love the sense of getting better/upgrading at the start. All the upgrades feel so meaningful, and add to the sense that i am slowly getting the hang of things. But then the game always has surprises up its sleeve. So so good.

Could not disagree more with reviewers. Always thought this game looked like a solid 8. And it is. Maybe even more if it wasnt for occasional framerate hiccup.

Oh boy that ending. They have the potential to branch out a bit with the sequel and I Hope Bend gets the chance to do that and we don't get another "The order" situation...

Regarding the chance to tackle hordes now: what I wanted to have is stuff like where you can barricade yourself in a house, shoot some of them through the planks until they get through and then you have to escape to the roof and so on. I didn't see yet anything that would remotely allow stuff like this. Thus my reference to Resi 4 mercenaries mode.
Sooo hordes are usually easier to tackle out in the open but I found one hibernating in some houses just now and thought of this post you made yesterday. For the hell of it, I did my best to hole up in the house across the street and hold my position for as long as I could manage.

Holy shit, I would never have banked on this strategy but that was amazing. Very effective.

What is the general consensus on this game after 3 weeks from people that have played it? I cancelled my order due to reviews but is this one that people tend to like better than reviews? Is it worth waiting for a patch?

That feeling when you trigger a speaker you missed in the Nero checkpoint by the Saw Mill....

Holy shit, they were everywhere. I'm nowhere near ready for a horde that size, I don't even have traps yet, so I was carefully exploring and making sure I didn't trigger them. I thought I'd grabbed all the speakers before firing up the generator, turns out I'd missed two; one on the roof of all places (amateur hour!) and one in a tree outside. What a moment though as I desperately tried to turn off the generator and then had to abandon that as about a million freakers came swarming over the fences at me. In my headlong flight, I looked back to see how far they were and rode my bike right off a big drop, hit a tree at speed and died.

Yeah that was fun as hell! It helped that the freakers all beelined straight for the one tiny window and jammed it up.

It could definitely use some patches to iron out a few major performance issues so there's no harm in holding out but I'm glad to have ignored the reviews on this one. I've enjoyed playing and chatting about it these past few weeks more than any game in recent memory.

I love it. One of the best open world gameplay loops in a long time and I quite like the story and characters. The world is beautiful, like seriously good looking! The detail in camps and in general interiors is amazing. It has to be one of the most geometrically dense games in terms of world detail. Hordes are very fun to engage with and there's a big selection of weapons for every taste once you progress in the game.

The game is a slow starter and there's frame rate issues later in the game (nothing I can't live with though). I've experienced two minor bugs and I'm in the final stretch of the game with the full map almost explored.

Shooting feels bad to begin with due to the starter weapons and zero skills. Once I got better weapons and invested in skills for them the combat felt really good. Melee combat is... meaty, and fun - and again better with skill investment and late game weapons. The overall character progression just feels good in this game. Going from ill equipped wimp to skilled up murder machine with an arsenal to make any gun nut green with envy.

One of the best games of the year for me so far.

I was pretty eh on this from at the start, but stuck with it and it's really clicking for me now. The whole start of game is too slow and story-wise it doesn't get interesting till you get to Lost Lake. I don't know how far I am into it at the moment, but I just got to the "point of no return" settlements and did a few missions for them & found
Sarah.
Loving it now.

This is why you don't 100% trust critic reviews.

They may basically "dislike" something.. but more often then not those games that are average turn out to be one of my favourite of the console.

I have a lot of time for games press but I think fundamentally, games are longer and longer nowadays and in order to provide a proper review you need to complete the game - which means FORCING yourself through, in this case, 50+ hours of content, and usually in a short span of time (not in this case though)

Forcing yourself to finish that kind of thing is going to stop being fun very quickly. Even if you still enjoy it you're not enjoying it in a natural state of "relaxing" which everyone else is

It will also make all the bugs and problems seem far larger than they are

Of course this isn't always the case, but having worked in games criticism and experienced this first hand, I think it's a pretty real effect

One of the best open world games I played, sadly very underrated.
Personally, I love it, it's perfectly playable on a Pro but I'm not sure on a standard PS4. A patch is coming soon and may probably address the performance issues that generally happens later in the game.
