Good open world games require more then just good story.
GTA4 had a decent story, but suffered with poor mission variety.
The gameplay and open world look great in days gone, but the jury is still out on story and mission variety.

For me personally open world games don't need a good story at all. I'd rather have a good story with more linear narrative focused games.

I want my open world games to have fun and rewarding exploration with a good loot system and fun sidequests.

If for exapmple RDR2's story was half as good and that 50% of pure quality was pumped into the missions and gameplay, I would have had a much better time with the game.

I didn't realise how close the release date is.

I hope Sony promotes the game more as other releases seems to have had more hype

Come on guys, don't set your expectations (Metacritic wise) to high. Expect an average review score around ~80. Which is already great :)

It's time for some ads during the The Walking Dead commerical breaks ;)

Most people will be expecting a decent story from days gone.
For me mission story and variety go hand in hand. For example in RDR2 most of the mission had a purpose directly tied into the story, you had to Rob to support the gang, go fishing with John's son, steal something for a mission, there are tons more examples with very unique gameplay scenarios like pretending to be high class and win a card game on a ferry casino, scaring a guy by hanging him of the side of a boat in a Croc pond etc

What I hate are tedious loot, kill or fetch quests with shoddy context, where you have to do a lot of these very tedious simple tasks in order to progress.
I am concerned that in some gameplay of days gone you are at a camp and a guy who is an authority of the camp says you have "salvage the salvage" and after he says you got to start doing runs for him where drifters have been causing trouble for his supply routes and u have go to a radio tower where the drifters have taken over, it sounds very much like you got to go to the drifters, kill them, steal there shit and report back to the camp leader.

He says it 48.35 in this vid

It is good that there is context, that you are retrieving the things that Leon stole l, but the runs do sound like very filler ish, and not the most exciting mission type, a bit like in fallout games "these raiders have been causing bother for me at the power plant etc"

I hope these type of "runs" are either more carried then they sound or there's not a lot of them in the game.

It is good that there is context, you are retrieving the parts Leon stole, but I don't hope these fetch quests are not just go to a freaker populated area and grab the loot or if they just that they are kept to a minimum throughout the game.

The two things I want most from the game is storyline and gameplay. I'm a bit skeptical about fetch missions but I'm looking positive from what I have seen.

Engaging story and characters, impactful scenarios and enemy encounters, stellar sound design and visuals and memorable soundtrack and we've got a winner exclusive here. Can't wait to see Sony Bend knock this out of the park before MLB does!

That is like the perfect game. No pressure at all.

I'd trade in some of that storyline for a well polished game and nice graphics. Polish and bugfree above a good story.

Really looking forward to it! It's strange though, the embargo lifts the day Captain Marvel releases and the game releases the same day as Avengers Endgame. What a bizarre coincidence.

Great to see Sony get fully behind this. Hopefully there's a $50 WW price cut to coincide with the launch.

Really looking forward to know more about the game and what can you do on it. So far I just know you can "creatively" kills hordes of "totally not zombies" in fun ways. I have also ignored all the recent story trailers, lol, should check them out to see if the narrative is promising.

We really don't know, what the missions will be like and weather the bulk of them will be of the fetch or just kill variety.

It is only a team of about 125, so I don't know if they will have the resources to make the missions as varied as a RDR2.
Could still be good though if the story is good.

We know not much but Bend often mentioned that the story is a big part of the game.

I expect a lot of well done story missions with many different locations.

Honestly at least on the critical path in RDR2 the missions didn't have that much variety. You could pretty much tell how a mission would go within the first minute or so.

I really don't see why you bring up RDR as an example for varied missions. Most of the game consists of you riding/walking and talking, going into a shootout and escaping.

From what we have learned of Days Gone, missions will be varied because of one simple fact, the game will let you do missions your own way using what you find in the world.

This is not true, most of the missions you are doing something different.

Eh.

I feel like most missions boiled down to:

1. Ride Horse while talking to another character
2. Get to destination and do something
3. Stuff goes wrong and gunfight breaks out
4. Repeat.

Obviously not every mission was like this but a lot of them where.

You could say uncharted 4 and god of war were unvarried when you talk the way you do here.

I mean in UC4 you are just killing guys and moving your character, not varied at all.....

(I don't actually think this, I'm just saying it to prove a point)

Yeah, not sure what he meant by RDR 2 missions were all identical. In one mission I am pouring oil to burn tobacco fields and in another i am taking a little boy(don't want to reveal to avoid spoilers) out for fishing. Not sure how you can call RDR 2 to be same in it's missions!

I love that Sony are betting on them and increasing their studio

Let's see what happens it's a day one purchase for me regardless

Exactly, and that's just 2 examples, there are 100s more. But if people choose to ignore the reality of this, they are not even worth conversing with.

I believe for me, Days Gone will be even better than Horizon.
Really like that rough and brutal survival setting.

My biggest fear is the story, I want nothing groundbreaking or complicated but hopefully it's nothing silly were you do facepalm wile playing.

I sure hope this game has more varied and way less boring and linear missions then RDR2. Why does everything here have to be compared with RDR2 anyway? It's not like that is the holy grail of open world games, or something. Especially not in terms of mission design.

Yeah, taking Jack out fishing was the most exhilarating thing I've ever done in a game, haha. About 90% of the missions come down to riding somewhere, then shit goes bad, then you shoot some guys with auto aim, then you escape.

I really hope Days Gone will have that Dying Light feeling and atmosphere. That you can wonder of from your base and feel like you're very deep into dangerous territory and just discover and loot shit.

About the latest Days Gone delay...

It has very little to do with "polish" and more to do with giving the ip it's own launch window. This is confirmed by Sam Witwer at the 34:40 - 35:40 minute mark.

In the bigger scheme of things this might turn out to be a crucial decision if the game resonates.
