Hang in there bro

Beat him last night for the first time ever, on my second try. Decided to go for it again after cooling off for a bit and had insanely good drops (two Legendary Ice Grenades with 30-35% damage reduction each, etc.). Went all in for damage reduction for the first time and I can safely say I'm immediately a convert. Still feel like to continue playing, finding more blueprints, and trying my hand at 1BC and perhaps higher.

A wonderful game that plays unlike anything I've ever played. A heartfelt thank you to the developers!

Total number of games 51
Total number of games finished 1 (1.96%)

Around 20 hours played.

Nice! Took me 4 tries to kill him the 1st time back in early access.

Damage reduction is great. Comes in even handier on harder difficulties since there are less/no flask refills. I have been on a Survival kick since Tonic and Vampirism give DR and heals, and shields are so good. What Doesn't Kill Me is an S tier mutation once you get the parry heal up to 3% +.

Jesus you beat it in 20 hours? I guess its my own fault for not discovering all the runes and other biomes till later but I'm at 40+ without a victory LOL

I'm just now realizing how many cells you can rack up going for a speed run. It's not obvious at first but by the time you are getting to that 4th and 5th Biome you are walking to a merchant with 80 cells and enough scrolls to be competitive late game. Seems like the game is balancing itself to give you enough legendary drops to have a chance too

That feeling when you are having a great run, awesome loot, and you get greedy with the hunters grenade trying to get a blueprint and die to an elite you chose to create.
FML LOL

I've never played a roguelike in my life but I am interested in this game and might pick it up. Is it a good starting rogue like, and is it a good game?

I never really got into roguelikes until this and I love it.

Also, you're asking if it's good in a thread that has over 4,000 posts? You already know the answer to that question, methinks.

I just bought it because it was so well received, and after several hours of playing, I have to admit I'm really not feeling it at all. I'm cool with games where you die all the time, but I think the fact that you lose all your cells with no way of getting them back is an unnecessary burden. It would be fine if it was like Dark Souls and you had to make your way back to where you were, but they're just gone. Nothing is worse than collecting 25 cells in a level and have a play time of 20 minutes just to have it all go to waste. Also, the levels are kinda boring, and for a game so punishing I wish the multiple paths were more developed. The game action is very nice though, and busting through enemies feels great.

Try not to worry too much about cells, get some health upgrades at the start, but when you are getting to the final levels you'll be pulling in 40-60 in one level

So I've gotten to the first boss knight... whatever he's called. But when he kills me I'm not finding it very fun to spend the time backtracking through three full levels and hoping I get decent enough weapon and stat boost upgrades along the way. Because I get literally nothing from 10mins of gameplay it feels empty to me. The game just isn't for me.

What, exactly, happens when I beat Concierge?

Spoiler tag if you must.

This game is very cool, don't get me wrong. But sometimes the frustrations (or just the mood I'm in) will make me really angry with the most innocuous things.

'Oh great another mystery door that I can't do anything with, try hard game.'

The timed locks are really not worth it, not in the style I play.

I think I've mentioned this before, but my prior experience with Dark Souls is a hindrance I think. I'm subconsciously thinking in Dark Souls terms, when I shouldn't be!

Finally beat the Hand of the King on my fifth attempt - now, how to cope with hard mode? Any particular tips for the new challenge or should I just stick with what has been working pretty well so far (focus on tactics, some sort of turret, wolf trap, exploding bow and whatever legendary melee weapon I can get my hands on). I've not utilised shields at all, is it important to learn that at some point?

What, exactly, happens when I beat Concierge?

You get a new permanent rune and a fresh blueprint - other than that, nothing which will carry over. You just move on to the next area, and will have to face the boss again on subsequent runs.

Picked this up on a whim. Didn't realize it was a souls style metroidvania but I love it!

Thank god it has a map. That is one of the dumbest fucking design decisions the souls games had. Whoever decided that shit should have been fired lol

What projectile weapon do you all recommend for someone who usually just fights with the sword? I like the ice, but wanted to know if there was something better (for a noob who hasn't played a whole lot). Or do you recommend a shield instead?

For me the patch is a mixed bag. Performance feels way worse than before, when shit explodes all over the place the 30fps cap seems to be triggered way more often to a annoying degree...

So if the devs did not manage an almost stable 60fps on switch handheld mode after all this time i suppose that the dream is dead...
I'm sad.

Popped in here to see what people thought about the update, instead read about people not being able to get past the fucking Concierge.

Game is ridiculously easy now on 0 cells, beat the king on my 2 first new runs without any trouble before being able to change difficulty. Gonna try later today with 1 and 2 cells.

I just bought this game a few days ago on Switch. Made it to HotK for the first time. I was so lost, lol. Got it to 50% then got overwhelmed and died. Feels good though.

On the 1.1 update. I got the chance to play a bunch right before the patch and after. I solely play in handheld mode btw. The framerate is still a mess. It's not unplayable, but if I have a build that involves a lot of effects (mostly poison or fire) the game definitely chugs. I really hope they can fix this.

Loving the game regardless. I was worried because people complain that it's grindy (which it sort of is) but I enjoy the gameplay loop enough to keep going.

Yeah it's the definition of a game that is driven by its gameplay loop, with the emphasis on "loop," even though the gameplay is golden.

I have found it hard to sell folks on this game because until one experiences it, it sounds meh on paper. The proof is in the playing.

Mini-rant: I have limited myself by being so shield-dependent. I absolutely LOVE shield gameplay, and normally roll with either a Spiked or Parry shield (both awesome) with a green focus. The problem: coming across useful items with freeze/slowdown. This fucks my whole game up, since a lot of my offense is based on parries, but parries are based on timing. The slow effect screws me on harder difficulties. I have to trash weapons/items that cause slowdown because they make all timing-based defense a crapshoot.

Not a knock on the game at all, but more of a frustrated venting because I have settled into a playstyle that is limiting.

A lot of these harder achievements are looking much more doable post patch. I'm currently trying to finish with the default sword, after that I might try to get a no-hit run on HotK with the Cursed sword to get those two out of the way at once.

I'm pissed off they cut Sadism though, it was one of my go to mutations.

I don't understand how they say this is close to 60fps on switch. At least on handheld, it's the same, if not worse...is docked better?

Same i saw this tweet and i was gonna buy it asap.

In the reponses the say 60fps rock solid especially on switch. But then i saw many mentions of concernaing framerate drops so i don't know what to think. Not very honest ? They talk about adressing bad framedrops when toxic cloud are displayed but is this the sole reason for the drops ?

It doesn't seem like rock solid to me. Someone needs to confirm, but yeah, doesn't seem particularly better IMO.

Edit: it seems better in some ways, possibly worse in others, so kind of a wash. My initial impressions were that it was no better and possibly worse, but I really have no analysis to back this up.

Yeah i'm personally not feeling the bump to 60. Especially with now all the shit on screen in 4cells/nightmare mode.

Speaking of which, I'm not really a fan of the overall bump in difficulty on that. Some little things are neat (the challenge rooms are harder which makes sense considering the reward), the elites are reworked a bit to have these new effects which in themselves. Some are okay, some are absolute bullshit.

But overall, i'm just disgruntled by the amount of shit the game throws on screen now. Gone are the days I could at least play aggressively/with my own playstyle. Now it's either you go very slow to avoid getting ganged by too many enemies that you can't read, or you just die super fast.

Beforehand I could get at least semi confidently to the clocktower. I got to the final boss a few times without beating him. I didn't mind a slight bump, but this makes it not only difficult but also just super unfun and unfair in a lot of places.

If you're gonna add the new effects on elites, at least remove the tiny zombies. Some of the added effects to the elites are also near impossible to avoid. In addition to the fact they can teleport, and some are in places where you can't avoid them, it makes it a real hastle to sometimes progress through a level. I'd say it would be more appropriate to have that on 5 cells than 4 if you really wanna have a mode that only a dozen people can complete. I might be also crazy, but I feel like there's WAY less cursed chests than before ? With now the fact that they become almost necessary to have a good build, their suspicious absence is a bit annoying

Changes to weapons and other things are neat tho. Particularily love the ability to reflect projectiles back more accurately now. The changes to timed/kill doors is also welcomed, and I like the new little things in the levels like having enemies "guarding" a legendary item.

With all the reports of all the dips in framerate on switch handheld i'm not happy with the way they announced this patch. Why announce 'rock solid 60fps especially on switch' and then have a myriad of instances where this is not true. I do not understand their communication on this patch performance wise.

I had to save scum big time but managed to beat HotK using the cursed sword for those two trophies to pop. Seems obvious given the hazard of playing with it but the cursed sword is fucking siiiiiick.

I had it left on one cell to unlock so I could pick it up just before the boss battle, in hindsight I would have unlocked it sooner and re-rolled the shop to try and pick one up on the final stage at a higher level and with the option to ++ it at the forge. At level V with + quality it had a dps of around 9,000 - on my build. Dread to think what it can reach up to.

Open Wounds, as a replacement for Sadism, is terrible and I wish I hadn't wasted a hunters grenade getting it.

With such a big change, it's a shame they didn't lump everything that was changed into a NG+. Or the opposite, lump the pre-patch settings into an NG+ or alternate "universe" or something, because I don't think I like how it plays as much as I did before.

I can understand making such drastic gameplay changes while in early access, but after you release a game officially you shouldn't change the gameplay that much... unless it's fucking horrible to begin with (which it obviously wasn't).

What the hell!!!!

MT doesn't want me to play other games anymore... After +100 hours on the game last year i finally let the addiction and stopped playing it for a while, but with the latest patch released on PS4 last week my fix was back and i can't stop playing the damn thing again!!! I can see myself putting more 100 hours one more time when this new patch reaches the PS4 in a couple of months.

BTW, the game is fucking amazing with the "pimp my run" patch, can only imagine the new one, 5 cell boss! new stage! new enemies! new bosses! 50 skins!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Finally played the "pimp my run version." I'd missed the news on it and for some reason GOG wasn't doing the auto updates even though it was set too. Glad they made it much easier on 0 cells. I'd never beaten the Time Keeper, did a few runs and beat him the first time I got that far and ended up going all the way and beating the game finally (37ish hours). Still need to get the spider rune and check out the biomes I didn't reach yet. I don't have much interest in doing higher difficulty runs though.

From what the v1.2 update implies, the higher difficulty runs will have a different ending eventually.

I must say, after bouncing off this game initially, I went back to it just before v1.1 as my 'podcast game' on my commute and I think having all of the movement runes helps to speed through levels - I still play it in mindless and repetitive way by skipping everything for the timed doors (hence listening to podcasts) but you can take your time and explore levels properly and be rewarded for it, which wasn't possible before.

Yeah, part of my earlier problem is I was ignorant to the mob scaling stuff so I'd always been taking my time, finding tons of scrolls and never getting past the time keeper. Lol. Having a lot more fun now that exploring and finding everything makes you OP.

Had a good run earlier (still doing 0 cells) and got past Conjunctivitis on my 2nd try and got through Slumbering Sanctuary, getting the Spider Rune along the way. Died in the castle after getting the third key so didn't finish it, but didn't figure I would as I didn't find nearly as good of gear as on the run I beat it on last night.

I hope the new ending is for 2-3 boss cells, because I don't expect many people to be even able to see it if it's 4-5 cells :|

I'm struggling big time on 4 cells. Is there any way to get rid of Malaise without using a health potion?

Also, post 1.1 Ice Shard has become my absolute favourite weapon. Fires almost instantly, has a massive spread, and on a tactics build does huge crit damage to anything covered in oil - which is a really common weapon effect. Cuts through HOTK like a hot knife through butter.

Are the performances only bad when the toxic clouds are here or is there any dips somewhere else ?

They talked about patching the issues with toxic clouds but well i'm still salty about their "60fps rock solid", borderline false advertising.

On handheld it dips waaaay more than before, but toxic clouds are the icing on the cake. To me who only play handheld, this update is only worth for the drop in difficulty, performance is worse.

So yeah i will hope and wait again for a patch. You should not advertise something 'rock solid 60fps' if it's in this state.
