I expected the scores to be all over the place and was not dissapointed. While I gave a 9.5, I could easily see people give it like, for instance, a 7. I don't agree with it, of course, but I can see it. This game is not for everyone. And that's perfectly fine, of course.

that happens all the time. a review reads like a 5 or a 6 but then boom, you see a 7 or 8 at the end.

My viewpoint is the vast majority of commercial games are essentially on a 0-4 scale, with 7 being 1. If a game gets below 7, it's usually a very negative review.

Alex Navarro - "There is not a single aspect of this game that doesn't feel intentional. When this game sucks, it feels like it is sucking for a reason. That does not make it good. That does not make it fun. But it feels like it was all designed to work together."

I loved this game so much. What a breath of fresh air. It brought back that feeling of popping in a new Konami PS2 game back in the day, not knowing what to expect. It's mysterious and engaging. This is definitely going on my list this year.

...and this comes from someone that doesn't usually enjoy open world design. This solves so many of those issues.

If the opening slog is a LITERAL and not an EXAGGERATED 10 hours, I don't think I'm ever going to get to the good stuff in this game, y'all.

That's a bit too long for me.

PlayStation LifeStyle 9.5

Death Stranding is not a "fun" game, but it's an important and meaningful experience that earns its payoff through every bit of frustration and slog. Its a look at life and death, connection and solitude; a game about building up what matters most and supporting each other selflessly. You'll be bored at times and downright frustrated at others, but it comes with a great reward at the end that is made sweeter by the trials that precede it. It's brilliantly unique in its design and implementation of online elements.

That Easy Allies review locked in a no purchase for me.

As far as the gameplay goes, BOTH the stealth and action are a crap shoot, with most of the game being tedious fetch quests. Yeah no thanks.

Story while whipping between aggressively vague and needlessly long winded and pandering, apparently ends up satisfying in the end (as the Filmcast would call it, a good sit). Thing is, I can watch all the cutscenes on Youtube for that.

Seems like the game is exactly what I thought it was from the start, an giant waste of time.

Is anyone else loving the vast array of differing opinions surrounding this game? It's utterly fascinating.

Huh I just saw 48 critics posted in Metacritic then I refreshed the page then it became 47. Do some reviews get added then pulled there?

Edit: wth now 44.

Edit 2 : now 49.

Pretty mixed as expected. It was always gonna be the type of game that some people will fucking love and some will fucking hate. I'm still interested to see which direction I'll fall on, though I'm fine waiting for the PC version.

But they're so low they are averaging the meta far lower than most other games.

It's definitely divisive, or at least, for a select few it is.

So Horizon Zero Dawn is also divisive because it got a 5. And Control also because it got a 4. I can be here all day.

As I said, really low scores happen in all games.

So far it's going precisely as many of us in the spoiler thread felt like it might. I tend to roll my eyes sometimes when people dive into threads with "Not surprising." But that's truly how it is right now -- it's not surprising that this is a critically divisive video game.

Game sounds right up my alley. I'm all for a slow-paced games with relatively simple gameplay mechanics. Will definitely pick it up when I have the time.

Eurogamer suggests that Kojima has finally outdone MGS4...

"
It's an odd universe, laden with symbolism: bridges, ropes, hands, babies, umbilical chords and the signifiers of death are everywhere. If it has an eerie power - and it definitely does - it is not thanks to the heavy-handed thematic treatment or the clumsy writing. Seldom has a game worked so hard to explain itself only to fail. The actors spend most of their time valiantly wading through a tar pit of exposition that somehow does little to advance your understanding or flesh out their strikingly designed characters. (In fact, this game is so obsessed with exposition that it continues through, and then past, the end credits. The entire hours-long final act of the game is so overblown, it's a scarcely believable display of hubris.)"

Yeah I'm not gonna sit through more long winded, "high brow" mumbo jumbo from Kojima if the gameplay surrounding it is tedious and unfun.
