Sure, it's not like Switch is going to fall off a cliff but in comparison to the PS4 I think we'll see a much more apparent peak and then decline. PS4 has been almost flat for four years straight.

I actually think it will resemble the PS4s curve a lot more this time since there won't be a separate platform they will need to ramp up support for. Which is why we'll be getting the next 3D Zelda and Mario and whatever else.

Congrats Nintendo! Smash has been a blast. I am still playing and I only play solo.

Good work this year to Spider-man as well. As a comic fan I love to see comic games play well and sell well.

Had a quick scan of the release.

Strong performance for Switch this month. Best single month in hardware sell through for any console since December 2010. Smash Bros. had an extremely strong month with revenue notably over $200m. What's also notable is how well Nintendo first party software has performed this year, even titles that are over a year old. Installed base is now over 10.5m in the US.

PS4 had a strong year for both hardware and software. First party was strong this year and overall software was extremely healthy for the full year (Thanks Red Dead). Annual hardware sales were down compared to 2017, but higher than 2016. Will be interesting to see how the console performs in 2019.

Xbox One had a good year all things considered. Hardware was up YoY thanks to the release of the Xbox One X. Software remains healthy and I really need to stress how large the digital shares are on Xbox compared to other platforms. Global installed base now around 41m.

Full game sales were up this year but it needs to be noted how digital game add ons, services and subscriptions continue to grow and account for a larger part of the pie each year.

Overall 2018 was a positive year for the console games industry in the US.

I feel like Nintendo was also lucky that people started liking cartoony games again, people gave them lots of shit for being kiddie in the ps2 gen but nowadays the biggest games (Fortnite, LoL, Minecraft) are all cartoony

Happy all three are doing well. Nintendo did a great job with the Switch and 2019 looks like it'll be even better.

Biggest games back then were also "cartoony": Pokémon, Mario, Kingdom Hearts.

10.5 million is a fantastic figure less than 2 years out. Competitive launch aligned with other successful platforms and seemingly doing insane software numbers both a retail and digital with a lot of indie devs finding success.

In retrospect I shouldn't be surprised at a large digital shares for xbox. It is a fantastic ecosystem and with things like gamepass and ea access it encourages an all digital approach.

Thanks for the impressions.

Knew the Xbox had to be over 40 by now. People have been saying 30-35 for what feels like the entire generation.

I agree with this. It does feel like years almost that I've been reading the 35m+ figure. Was this a consistent over estimate or did it really take a long ass time to get from 30m to 40m? It seems to sell decently in the U.S and the U.K.

3DS hardware sold more in 2016 than 2015 though. It actually runs counter to the point you're trying to make.

Well in 2016 3DS got Pokémon Sun/Moon and things like Kirby Planet Robobot which sold over 1.5 million alone, Super Mario Maker which did pretty well on 3DS, Yo-Kai Watch 2 in Japan, Fire Emblem Fates, etc.

Kudos to Nintendo. I had no doubt Smash would sell like crazy. Hot system + top franchise game = smash hit (pun intended).

Considering how great the game turned out, though, it's cool to see it be not just a huge hit, but an historic one.

Best place to post it is the PAL Charts thread. Someone did beat you to the punch though.

Not sure if it is revenue based or unit based but apparently PS4 console hardware was up YoY (probably the former):

Any PC software updates YoY?

Yeah King Zell hinted at this. He said BotW fans will be very happy with 2020 and that a 3D Zelda is coming then (2D Zelda this year). I put two and two together and assumed the 3D Zelda is a BotW sequel so that's my guesswork. It could be a prequel or an unrelated Zelda game with the same gameplay structure but I think Nintendo probably wants to make a sequel this time, possibly like Majora's Mask.
Ya. Heavily hinted at by an insider. Also 2D Zelda this year.

I don't know how I missed this but it makes me so very happy!

Are you able to stress to the point of proving comparative percentages between platforms?

They were not lucky, they believed in what they were doing, they believed if they made a great game it will leave great impression whether its cartoony or not.

after TP's huge success and SS's disappointing sales any company would have gone back to that realistic style and blamed poor sales on the game's look, but Nintendo didn't do that, they doubled down on the look and updated the game/series in the areas they felt were lacking compared to other games.

they made the right choice.

Probably the only regions where it's actually doing OK.

I feel like this argument will probably fall apart when the N64 classic sells well.
I imagine it would. Even if you figure on it not having any Rare games on it, it'd still be a machine that will play, at a minimum, Super Mario 64, OoT, Mario Kart 64 and a Mario Party game that isn't the first one. Those alone would generate a ton of interest if we don't have anything similar in place on the Switch at that point.

How reliable is _SuperData on twitter? I can't fathom how they'd have access to Nintendo digital sales but they reported this

That seems very unlikely lol.
I wouldn't put too much stock on "data research company" such as Super Data.
Best to wait for Nintendo's Q3 earning report next week.

Basically, Spiderman has way more direct competition on its platform and is the first entry of the series (even if it's a very popular, licensed one).

Smash is a series with huge sales and long tradition of fans, and didn't have to compete with other big selling game release on its platform during december. For that year only Pokemon was something comparable on its platform. Spiderman instead had to fight many other game sellers, like the biggest selling game of the year (RDR2) the typical launches (CoD, FIFA, NFL, AC, etc) and even in the 1st party side GoW won the GOTY in many places and I assume it will end selling more than Spiderman.

Lol you can't pay for better defense then this, this excuse get use every time with Sony. If people were to make a top 10 defense for Sony this gotta be in the top 3

Smash was just the better game, most of smash sales come from trying it at someone house and going out later to pick it up. Four of my friends pick it up, how many do that for Spider-Man. People forget most switch owners do not only own a switch and since they own 2 systems they are more in a difficult position then someone who only own a ps4 who have to pick only a ps4 game. A person with a switch and ps4 have to figure which system will get the last set of money he or she save from Xmas to get a new game do they pick a ps4 game or a switch game? And since they have to pick one game from both systems there are harder choices to make

Vs

Picking Spider-Man over red dead compare to picking Spider-Man over red dead, smash bros, Pokémon and etc

Last year you mentioned Xbox One being around 35 million by the end of 2017. So the Xbox One sold around 6 million last year? Seems a bit low.

Holy smokes at the Neogaf thread:

"Someone in another thread actually suggested they may be intentionally devaluing themselves in preparation for a potential buyout. Which is absolutely insane. But it hadn't occurred to me before, and in a crazy way, could explain some of their absolutely asinine regarding this event, the Switch, and the year coming up."

Are some of those people serious?
