State of the Market

December 2019 tracked spending across video game hardware, software, accessories, and game cards totaled $3.0 billion, falling 15 percent when compared to a year ago

Full year tracked spending declined 13 percent when compared to 2018, to $14.6 billion.

Software

Dollar sales of tracked video game software declined 13% in December compared to a year ago, to $1.1 billion, while annual sales dropped 9 percent to $6.6 billions
Declines were experienced across all platforms in December, while Switch was the only platform with gains for the year

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the best-selling game in the U.S. for the third consecutive month since its October launch. It finishes 2019 as the best-selling game of the year. This is the 11th consecutive year that Call of Duty has been the best-selling franchise. Call of Duty franchise releases account for 10 of the top 15 best-selling games of the decade.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order repeats as the second best-selling game of the month. It finishes 2019 as the year's sixth best-selling title. With only two months in market, Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order becomes Respawn Entertainment's best-selling game of all-time in terms of dollar sales.

MLB The Show 19 is now the best-selling baseball genre game in U.S. history. Lifetime full-game dollar sales of MLB The Show 19 have now surpassed those of MVP Baseball 2004, which originally released in March 2004.

Half of December's top 20 best-selling games were published by Nintendo. Luigi's Mansion 3 finished as December's fifth best-selling title overall, while ending 2019 as the fourth best-selling title of the year on Nintendo Switch."

Hardware

Hardware spending in December 2019 declined 17 percent when compared to a year ago, to $973 million. Annual hardware spending fell 22 percent, to $3.9 billion. Nintendo Switch gains could not offset declines across other platforms.

Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform of both December and 2019, while Sony's PlayStation 4 finished as the best-selling hardware of the decade.

Accessories

Total December 2019 spending on accessories and game cards fell 14% when compared to a year ago, to $869m. Annual sales of accessories and game cards declined 7%, to $4.1B. Spending declines were experienced across both accessories and game cards.

The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 repeated as the best-selling accessory of the month. The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller finished as 2019's best-selling accessory, while the PS4 DualShock 4 Wireless Controller Black was the best-seller of the decade.

Is there any way with marketing that Death Stranding broke even? Yikes. Gameplay and reviews must have cratered it. Kojima might be the only one that could have swung that deal.

Mario Kart 8 being the number 10 best selling game all year is definitely something to behold, beating out GTAV no less too.

Glad Anthem finally got booted from the 10 top sellers all year, it was always an eyesore seeing it high on the list.

GTA V didn't crack the top 10. Maybe the next entry will do better

Thoughts from the other thread:

LM3 should pass 10m within the next year imo. Wonder if 15m will be possible

NSMBU above SMM2, which doesn't make the top 10
Seesms to cements what we already know. Nintendo needs to make a traditional 2D Mario (in addition to a level editor). The Franchise can still hit 20 or 25 million.

Ring Fit at 10 is good, but not as impressive as it's JP performance.

Link's Awakening wasn't in the top 20 for November, so it came back [a bit]

Surprised no Odyssey for Switch's Top 10. Zelda will be gaining fast

Does Pokémon usually drop that much?
Impressive legs for Star Wars and Luigi's Mansion.

And Kingdom Hearts 3 managed to stay in the top ten of the year! Nice

Thanks for the thread !

Reminder of Mat's predictions for 2019
After E3:
2019+Best+Selling+Video+Games.jpg

In September:

video-game-chart-3.jpg

So as we already knew, Ghost recon severely underperformed. Death Stranding too, but Mat had already changed his prediction after the E3 reveal
And it seems like Smash and Mario Kart 8 surpassed expectations too

Switch continues to be magic. Who the heck would have thought Luigi's Mansion would ever be a best-selling series for Nintendo.

Yo there must be a mistake here because I don't see Death Stranding listed anywhere and I heard it was gonna change the industry? December was its second month right?

You'd think Sam Porter Bridges would have had stronger legs after all that delivering.

Death Stranding booted out of the top 20 in it's second month, beaten by Ring Fit Adventure out of all games...… I don't think it did too well.

I never imagined that Luigi 3 would actually beat out some of the other games not on this list.

I will gladly eat timefall crow on this one.

Ring Fit is killing it. So many people knocking Dragaux down a peg. Pretty crazy seeing 10 Nintendo titles in the top 20 in December

10 Nintendo exclusives in the top 20 and nothing from Sony and Microsoft. Ooooophhh. Sony should just start the PS5 hype machine finally because it's clear the audience is ready to move on.

Wow MK8 is top 10 for the whole 2019. That's impressive for 2 years old port of WiiU game.

Pokémon would probably be in the top 10 if they have combined the sales. Pokémon Shield didn't get into the top 20.

Uh... everyone?

It has been a best-selling series since its GameCube debut.
Luigi's Mansion sold 3.33m units
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon sold 6.16 units
Luigi's Mansion 3 is guaranteed to sell 10m units, and may even get close to 15m.

That's not a predictable growth imo

As I was saying in the last PAL thread in jest (...or was it?), the competition shouldn't have been Death Stranding vs. Luigi's Mansion 3, it should have been Death Stranding vs. Ring Fit Adventure.
